God, do they still make turntables that run at that speed? Our huge console model from the early sixties did but I haven't seem one since.

I'm sure they do. There are still enthusiast and collectors of those old, big discs.

They are so brittle though. A friend's parents had an old wind-up Victrola with the cone and the really big hollow needles (20 spares in a little drawer) and a stack of hits from the depression. They still played pretty good but if you as much as tapped them against a sharp edge they would shatter.

Gave up all my records years ago, along with the stereo. Spotify and the computer speakers put the old tech to shame.

Yeah. I held on to my records for years then sold them to a woman that was working for me for $1 each because she was such and audiohead.
There is a strange story attached to that I can send you in a PM if you are interested.
