Kylie
Title can't be empty.
Title can't be empty.
UPDATE: I touched up the drawing to correct some things and add some muscle tone and adjust some shading. Her abdomen was the main thing I needed to adjust -- my hand had twitched the first time when I did the contour so the curve was "broken" and not lined up right. It's finally fixed now. :)

This is Kylie, she's a young Gen-2 female bat G.E.L.F. who is still at The Center, in my "Family Tails" story. She's 157 cm (or about 4 ft 6 in), and was introduced in chapter 9. She is also in chapter 14, which I'm writing now. Kylie does have the echo location ability of (almost) all bats, plus her wings are functional--she can fly short distances of perhaps to, say, the roof of a three-story building vertically or about 30-40 meters horizontally (still developing her flight muscles). She may never be able to fly as well or as far as a true bat, but she can at least get out of the way of something or safely leap from a building. Her eyes can see well enough at twilight, though the bright noon time sun in Texas tends to be too much for her. Unlike true bats, Kylie was created with two digits at each wrist, giving up one wing "rib" (finger) so that she can grasp objects. Clothing is something of a challenge for her, given the membranes of her wings and having only two digits on each "hand". Though you can't see them in the drawing, her feet do have the typical long five toes that can grab a hold of something and "lock", so she can actually hang upside down if she wishes, though she kind of likes sleeping on a regular bed.
I drew this using mechanical pencils, graphite stick, various blending and shading tools, on Georgia-Pacific "Everyday Copy & Print" paper.

I'm sure her body mass is relatively light, and her upper body muscles will develop more with practice, though she'll probably never be a really efficient flier, or able to carry a lot of weight. I guess a bit of a trade-off for being able to walk upright and having two-digits to grasp objects with on each "hand" (I had a heck of a time drawing her right "hand"/wrist joint...still not sure if I got it just right or not).
She's a sweet little gal. ;)
Heh, "scary looks"...about the only thing that looks scary to me are spiders (especially greatly magnified close-ups of their faces). :P
Yeah, books like "Dracula" (based in fact about our good buddy Vlad -- I wonder how many people know that the "a" at the end of "Dracula" means "son of Dracul", and "Dracul" can be translated as either "dragon" or "devil"), "Frankenstein's Monster; or The Modern Prometheus" by Mary Shelley (which I drew reference from for the way the humans in "Family Tails" tend to view the G.E.L.F.s -- see Symbolism, Imagery & Allegory), Dante's "Inferno", and Milton's "Paradise Lost", sure have shaped a lot of people's thinking.
There's been some success at giving coons in the wild rabies vaccine in effort to cut that down. The common brown bat found here in the U.S. eats only bugs, though they pick it up from mosquitoes, if I remember. Oh yeah, and that bit about bats will get stuck in your hair...HA! That might have something to do with the whole superstitions about hair (which is why in history women were made to keep their hair covered and not brush it openly lest it caused storms at sea, earthquakes, and other disasters). 8^)
The inspiration came from some bat characters ("Echo" and "Yvonne" by James Hardiman, "Sasha Gothica" by Style Wager, and "Bat Priestess" by Dark Natasha).
I would have to borrow a friend's set of Prismacolor pencils (if I had my own set, I would do a lot more in color...being unemployed sucks).
And well.. how much would you charge, an could you do it in color :P
like would the friend share LOL
For a detailed drawing on 8.5x11 inch paper, $5 for single character, $6 for two together, if done in regular pencil and graphite stick; $10 in color. Heh, I guess if I promise to make some spaghetti for her, I think she might (my friend uses her expensive Prismacolor pencils on her counted cross stitch charts, of all things!)
and hmm.. mmm.. ok. Did you read the desc. of Thalassa on her page?
Heh, for some reason or another, people really like my spaghetti sauce (couldn't possibly be because I make it from scratch, using organic tomatoes, wine, oregano, sweet basil, fennel seed, a spoon of organic sugar, garlic,...). ;)
Not yet...I'll grab a cup of coffee and head over to check her out. :)
Typical brown sugar as you would buy in a store, is just processed white sugar with a little molasses added back, which is why it tends to clump and get hard (from the moisture). I use organic raw sugar, which is naturally brownish in color (crystallized before the maximum extraction of molasses and not bleached / decolorized).
Got the info about your character printed out (easier for me to refer to). I can do a quick sketch (line art) and see if it's anything like what you want.
When I get the line drawing finished, I'll ding ya and let you know. :)
No domesticated animals or breeds of canine?
Heh, in real life, there are already sheep that are 15% human.

But wait, isn't that most of the voting population? :P

In my story anthro collies replaced feral sheepdogs.
After personally seeing the aftermath of what feral dogs did to the sheep we used to have when I was a kid (ran them down and killed every one of the 68 we had one night...but then left them), I can understand why farmers and ranchers kill feral dogs whenever they find them (versus somebody's pet that got lost, or some eejit city type dumping their unwanted pets near us country dwellers, unwittingly exasperating the problem of feral animals).
I've probably been a fur much longer than you.
First story was in mid 2009, although I deleted and wrote another a few month later that was my first ever submission.
You'll get the hang of it, I helped Gray Muzzle and a few others when they when they were new.
The wing membranes extend down to her waist, which is why she doesn't fly as well as a true bat (not as much lift), and there is no membrane between her legs and tail as on a true bat (not as good steering ability). She still has very bat-like feet.
The G.E.L.F.s have full human-level intelligence and sentience, so they can learn whatever they want. I also mention in my "Family Tails" story that the children of Ron and Lupina Daugherty and Rosie, all started school knowing the English, Irish, and Cyrillic alphabets and the ability to count up to (I think) 100 in each. They started grade school at the age of three years, two years sooner than human children their same age.
Maybe one day my stories could be translated professionally into other languages. :)
Oh, if you want to see another of my bat characters who appear in "Family Tails", here's Cynthia...
