As miserable as Jessamine's life was in her home city of Jaspertree, at least it was familiar. She knew how to survive as a slave, and what the rules were for living in the city. The day she finally won her freedom was the happiest day of her life, but leaving the city scared her more than anything she'd ever had to do.
