The catch is that since it would make parts of the scaled surface increasingly rigid, so you'd be slowed down by multiple impacts and briefly immobilized by a large enough explosion, as well as probably simply knocked flat.
Credits for this idea come from the original 'Crysis' trailer by EA which shows the operation of the games 'tactical nanosuit' in various modes. In 'Maximum Armor' mode the suit interlocks at the point of impact to deflect projectiles, but moves more slowly as a result.
Well, for scales, that would be scales able to be broken down into smaller scales, and the durability and other properties is still determined by how well they can interlock (yes they are harder than before, but what kind of weapon it can withstand is to be determined), and the speed they do that. (e.g. if you can undo the interlock quick enough, the immobility won't be too much of an issue)
One thing I realized is that since in the old times people would imagine dragons have scales impenetrable by arrows, it's only legit for us to come up with something like nano-structured scales, right?
