Boy is that scene familiar - finding the dragon's horde without the dragon present.
Only a canary in a birdcage sitting on the biggest heap, twittering away while the party explored and looted.

Little did the party know that the canary (and cage) was actually [i]The Dragon[/i] hiding in a shapeshifted form... until it decided the party had looted enough and ate returned to its natural form. It managed to eat half the party before the rest escaped....
