"Good morning, Carl."
"What did you do?"
"A lot of things actually. However I'm sure you're asking about yourself. Well, I locked off the passenger compartment and put you all to sleep. Once you were out I placed all of you in stasis pods to make sure you couldn't be tracked and then I brought you back to my ship. Once we arrived I moved the tubes to medical. We started with you because we only had to cleanse Lucinda's nanites from your system. It's been two days since we left Freedom. I sent a coded message for Violet, telling her that you are safe and in my care. She is the only one with the key for decoding the message so I know she's the only one who'll read it."
"Can't you contact her directly?"
"If I knew her exact location and she wasn't in hyperspace then yes, but since she is traveling the message has to wait until they make a course correction for her to retrieve it. Anyway, for now I'm keeping your group separate from the soldiers until we learn of Lucinda's reaction."
"What does that have to do with me?"
"A great deal as it turns out. Your ex-husband was one of Lucinda's favorite employees. Her personal security guard. It's a wonder you survived. If you want to compose a message for your daughter. Let me know and I'll send it in the next data package."
"I- I'll think about it."
"Admiral, Jay's treatment is complete and I'm ready to wake him."
"Who is that?"
"Hello Carl, I am Mahan."
"Right, the ship's computer."
"I'll have you know that I am a highly developed Artificial Intelligence, fully as alive as, and even more capable, than a mere human. I'm not just the ship's computer." Mahan stated.
"Touchy subject obviously."
"Try not to insult him, it makes life so much easier for everybody, trust me. The cafeteria is just down the hall. Mahan can explain how to use the dispenser." I said, as I backed out the door. "One last thing, these are your private quarters so if you lock the door the only ones that can unlock it are you and Mahan. He won't allow anyone to invade your privacy, including me, unless your life is in danger." I closed the door
I watched the doctor drone push the medical tube containing Jay into the next room. I stepped inside as she transferred Jay onto the bed. "Marten will be healed shortly. Have you gotten the required codes to repair and upgrade patient Hiro's nanites?"
"I spoke directly to his grandfather before we returned to altered space. Mahan has the codes for a full cleansing and authorization to replace them with the newest Shadow Tech variation. I believe it may be so that they can eventually have access to our version."
"But the healing nanites are a collaborative effort. They already have samples." The Doctor stated.
"So there's nothing to be concerned about."
"I'll begin the process immediately."
Jay moaned and the doctor scurried out.
"Where am I?"
"You're aboard my ship, the Shadow Runner. More specifically you’re in your quarters that you'll be sharing with Marten."
"Where is he?" Jay asked sitting up.
"Calm down. He is still being worked on. Removing all those substandard nanites and regenerating your eye is nothing compared to regenerating his lost testicles. Still, it shouldn't be much longer. So how do you feel?"
"Tired. Like I've over exerted myself."
"That's to be expected considering the changes I made to you."
"What changes?" he growled.
"Nothing major, I just reset your genetic clock a bit. Basically I reset your body by ten years so instead of 37 physically you're closer to 27. Let me tell you it wasn't easy keeping you looking old. As it is, you actually look about your chronological age now, instead of looking like an old man. If you and Martin are unhappy I’ll do my best to change you back. However, this way you look different enough that you shouldn't be recognized by anyone Lucinda sends after you."
"Why are you doing this for us? I mean it can't just be because you hate Lucinda."
"There was a knock on the door and then Shock pushed Martin's tube into the room."
"Jay, meet Shock, one of my husbands. He's about the same age as Martin. To answer your question it's probably because we have something in common. A couple of kids who love us deeply despite being old and stupid."
"Tiger, don't start that again or I'll tell Kyle." Shock threatened.
"It was just a bit of a joke, Foxy. I'm not really saying I think I'm stupid, but even you have to admit I do stupid things from time to time."
"You mean like sitting there instead of helping me transfer this kid onto his bed?" Shock asked.
I quickly stood up and helped Shock with Martin. "Jay, I'm going to leave him here with you. I'm sure he isn't going to want any other company as he makes sure everything is in working order. This is your private quarters, so once you lock the door only the two of you and the ship's AI can unlock it. If you get hungry the cafeteria is just down the hall." I practically dragged Shock out the door.
"What's going on?" Shock asked.
"Think about it. Jay's been in prison for the last five years and no one would get near him fearing what Lucinda would do to them. Martin on the other hand just found out he had been castrated and now he has his equipment back. What do you think is going to be on their minds?"
"Ah, I wonder if I should place a few bets on when they finally make it to the cafeteria?"
"Don't you dare. Currently we're the only ones that know they're aboard, though Kicker might have an idea as to what I was hinting on the bridge."
"Is that why you have them out here in the wing barracks?"
"That's right, I want them to feel secure before introducing them to everyone else."
"Got it. The doctor should be finishing up with removing Hiro's nanites so it shouldn't be much longer." Shock said.
"I'd better go escort him out here. Considering he's getting the good stuff he'll likely wake up immediately. Will you wait here in case any of them need help working the matter generators in the cafeteria?"
"Sure. If Carl comes out first I can bet with her on how long it takes for those two to get hungry."
"Careful, I don't want to have to treat you for gambling addiction."
Shock seemed to consider for a moment. "Mahan, you monitor everything. Do you think I have a gambling addiction?"
"No, not as of yet, but you may want to consider cutting back before an addiction develops. You don't want to end up like Prowl-Ar and his need to rescue strays."
"Mahan?" I asked.
"He's right. I'm not saying you should change, after all you're helping those in need and I wouldn't want to change that about you." Shock insisted.
"I know. That's another reason I tried to isolate myself from others for so long."
"Like I said, it's one of your better features, now get going before your latest stray wakes up."

As the lift was headed back toward the main infirmary I realized I needed to check in with another of my 'strays'. "Computer, pause lift movement. Register it as maintenance on lift tube."
"Tiger, I'm getting an alert that you're trapped in a lift. Are you alright?" Kyle asked.
"I'm fine, Drake. I'm just taking a time out to check up on Kazuki and give him a bit of advance warning about the evacuation of Fallow."
"I hadn't thought about that. I hope the maintenance doesn't take too long."
"It shouldn't. Computer, Pause game for Prowl-Ar. Mahan, will you please place a call to Kazuki."
"He's currently on a VR call. It seems a large publisher is trying to force him to stop using your branding. They claim they have exclusive rights."
"You're kidding."
"No, I'm not. It seems they've copyrighted all material related to the Shadow Runners."
"I thought you held all those copyrights."
"I'm looking up the records now. As I suspected he's a fraud. He's been signing off on rights as 'Prowler Night-Tiger'. I'm going to have fun with this one."
"Drop me into the call."
"Listen you little nothing. I'm telling you I'm going to sue you for every last yen for stealing from me. Once I've finished with you I'm going after those fakes making those VR videos."
"Go ahead and try it. I've met the real Shadow Runners and they're going to . . ." Kazu paused as he noticed my avatar behind the corporate stooge.
"So you realized you're in the wrong then?"
"No, he realized I've joined your little conversation."
"And who are you? Some little friend of his using a character skin. I'm not afraid of you."
"Tell me, how many people have you scammed, how many lives have you ruined, how well have you kept records? You really don't need to answer, Mahan is compiling all that information. You see, claiming to be me, that ticks me off, but I can live with it. Trying to steal from Mahan? That will land you in real trouble." I laughed, as Mahan gave me an update without transmitting it into the chat.
"What are you laughing about?"
"Oh, a great many things. You see Mahan works fast. All of your legal accounts have been frozen. The illegal or hidden accounts have been drained and closed. Your car is currently being repossessed. When you hear the knock at your door, that's the police. Oh and your VR account was just canceled. Huh, I guess I was a bit slow. He seemed to cut out when I mentioned the police. So Kazu, how has it been going?"
"Well other than that idiot it's been going great. I've finished all my comics for the next convention and I've been able to take on a few art commissions. I really can't thank you enough for everything you've done for me."
"Well, you might not be as happy when you discover why I'm here. I'm giving you a heads up that Fallow was evacuated leaving your characters stranded. Mahan has the next video ready for release, but I thought I'd give you advance notice of what happened. In fact you'll be able to watch the full episode and we'll hold it until after the next convention if you want to do a supplement of your character's reaction to the event. Though you might want to polybag the issue with a large spoiler tag for fans of both your comic and the show."
"If you don't mind my asking why are you doing this for me?"
"Do you want complete honesty or sugar coated?"
"Honesty, of course." Kazu said.
"I collect strays. People that seem down on their luck that I feel deserve a helping hand. While it's true you're good for my public image, even if you refused to do another comic related to the Runners I'd still help you because you have talent."
"That was honesty?" Kazu asked.
"Sugar coating would have been me telling you that I love your comics and I'm helping you so that you'll keep making them."
"Stick with honesty. Your sugar coating feels hollow and almost patronizing. So, if Fallow was evacuated what now? A new game or a new mission?"
"Well it may seem that way but it is still the truth. Anyway it’s the same game, but a new planet. All this really does is open up the Fallow server to gamers."
"Maybe I should actually play to get a better idea of what my characters are experiencing."
"If you ever feel that need just ask Mahan to load you in to your comic location in observer mode. You won't be abler to interact with the characters but you'll be able to see and hear everything they would. Well, I should get going. It's not exactly a good idea to pause the game very long for a single player. If you have any more problems like that guy just ask Mahan for help."
"I can do that?"
"Of course you can. I do my best to make sure all of Prowl-Ar's strays are taken care of."
"Mahan, you make him sound like a lost kitten." I said.
"Think about it, to me you're all strays that I've collected including you, your mates, and your kids. And as if I need to point out you are literally a little lost tiger kitten."
"I really don't understand why anyone would dislike you. Everything you've done has been to help others. You even negotiated a deal with the Grimm keeping him from killing the American President. A man that treated you and your mates so horribly, yet you intervened to save his life. I can't think of anyone else with such a forgiving heart. I may be one of your stays, but you know what? I'm proud to be able to say that you're my friend. Now get back to your game, if you're keeping your fans waiting just for me then I don't want to be responsible for the episode after the evacuation to be late." Kazu's avatar disappeared.
"He's logged off, should I get him back?" Mahan asked.
"No, He's right, I really should get back to the game."
***
"Welcome back Hiro."
"You drugged me. That shouldn't be possible."
"Nano-scrambler, remember?"
"My nanites are top of the line. They shouldn't have been affected."
"They were top of the line when you were arrested. Not that it matters, my nanites were shut down as well and they were three generations beyond what used to be in your system."
"You removed my nanites? You can't do that! They’ve completely replaced my immune system. Without them I'll die." He yelled, trying to sit up. "You have me restrained?"
"Only because I suspected you'd react this way. Your immune system has been completely regenerated and you've been seeded with the newest Shadow Tech nanites that work with your system rather than replacing it. Now relax and watch this little video."
"Hiro-"
"Grandfather?"
"It's a video message not a communications link." I told him.
"I do not know how you have done this thing, but I must say that I am proud of you. It takes skill to fail your mission so completely, yet bring more honor to the Yakuza clans than when the ancestors turned away from crime and focused instead on research and technology to benefit all human kind. Do you even realize where you are? If Lord Nightiger hasn't already informed you, you’re the first of any of us allowed such close contact with the creators of Shadow Tech. You are in the most sacred sanctum, the Shadow Runner itself. I've seen the video and I'm ashamed that you would think we would break your honor in such a fashion. If you were to be so shamed it would be in person before the clan elders. Lord Lightstripe has improved and re-forged your sword. Honor requires that you protect your new allies. However, that is to be your secondary mission. It is just as important as your new primary mission, considering Lucre Industries response to your disappearing act. As for your primary mission, we will discuss that when Lord Nightiger allows you to contact me."
"That's it, no closing he just ended the message."
"Please don't be offended."
"I'm not, that's just the way he is. I've gotten used to it. I just thought he'd act differently towards his family."
"No, I shouldn't reveal this, but he ends conversations and messages that way because he knows he'll be speaking with you again. If he ever ends a message the way you'd expect it means he'll never speak to you again, likely because you'll soon be dead. What surprises me is how highly he respects you. He rarely speaks of others and never so openly."
"It seems he's not finished with you. Now I don't know what this primary mission is, but I suspect it has to do with you becoming a MAS pilot. He requested that you train to use a suit. I did some digging and it seems the Yakuza Clans are getting into suit manufacturing. I don't have any details yet but the rumors are that they are working on a stealth armor. So I'm guessing you're going to be the field test pilot."
"I- I should be returning to Earth to be punished for my failure to execute Lucinda."
"Your mission would have failed no matter how skilled you are."
"I know that! My mission was to deliver a message by dying in the attempt!"
"So you didn't die needlessly and now your new mission is to die protecting the two individuals that Lucinda currently hates more than me. If you ask me, it is much more honorable to die protecting two innocent individuals."
"That's my secondary mission."
"Either way you're going to need this." I presented Hiro with a black and red lacquerware box. He opened it to find his katana.
"The sheath is iron wood. It took some time to generate it. I could have gone with just about any substance but your Grandfather asked me for my best. I'm not sure he even realized what my best is. As you can see the tsuba is from your original sword. To re-forge the blade I broke it down to its basic elements and then regenerated it one molecule at a time mixing in a few extras to supplement the traditional process."
Hiro slid the sheath open a few inches. The back of the blade was crimson and the cutting edge was shiny black. "It's beautiful, the original was machine forged and the same as a thousand other swords. This is a work of art."
"Don't blood the blade! There is exactly one inch at the very base where you can do so if you feel the need. It is razor sharp, but if you're careful you won't lose your thumb. The rest of the blade has a monomolecular edge. The only think it can't cut is the sheath, and I suppose any other Iron wood objects."
"I've heard the theories, but I never imagined such a thing was possible."
"Two days ago I'd have agreed, but when an ally like your Grandfather askes for the best I can do, I do everything I can to surprise him. Oh, I should probably mention that sword cannot be broken. In fact the only ways to destroy it, would be the molecular disintegrators on this ship, a black hole, or perhaps a sun. I say perhaps because the metals I added are the same ones used to construct this ship and we recharge the Runner by skirting a sun's corona."
"I really don't deserve a blade like this."
"No one does. However, it is your sword, now make sure to live so that you are worthy of it. Now, your new nanites should be fully established, so if you'll follow me I show you to your quarters."

The four convicts stared into the mirrors I'd passed out. Even though they had approved the changes and knew what to expect, I knew how shocking it could be to look at yourself and not recognize the face looking back. Martin was the most extreme having three parallel scars running from his left temple to his right cheek just missing his eyes. His hair color had gone from dirty blond to dark brown and he had three earrings in each ear each dual colored to form a rainbow all together. Jay went a bit younger and Martin objected. They came to a compromise when Jay added more gray to his hair and added a nasty scar across his eye. He now sported an eye patch that hid a full spectrum monitor that he could adjust to several settings. Hiro had chosen to go with spiky blond anime hair and a younger nearly androgynous face. Carl however had gone for the most radical change. Her hair was now vibrant pink and half her face was covered in a tribal tattoo pattern. The most important point however is that they didn't look like the bounty images that were likely to appear.
"So, are you ready to meet the others?"
"Do they know about us?" Hiro asked.
"They've all seen the video and they know someone made a side trip to Freedom. So even though they haven't been specifically informed it is likely they do."
"Why do we have to move?" Martin asked.
"Mahan, ship schematic please." Wire frames of the Runner from above and the side appeared on the screen. "Highlight medical in white, port wing barracks B-section in red, and primary flight barracks A-section in green. As you can see medical is a deck above the main barracks while your current quarters are way out there at the end of the wing. Now move the red highlight to their new quarters. As you can see you four will have your own hallway. Since everyone knows your stories they are likely going to be careful and let you make the first moves toward getting to know each other."
"When do we have to move?" Carl asked.
"You already have. Mahan's drones moved your things while you were being altered. Your rooms are exactly the same configuration and everything has been replaced within a micrometer of where you left it in your former quarters."
"Everything?" Jay asked.
"Everything including the extra pistol Carl keeps under her pillow and the plush rabbit-"
"We get it." Martin interrupted.
"Good. Mahan, you have complete control?"
"As always when traversing altered space."
"Open ship wide channel. All personnel meet in the pilot briefing area immediately, Prowl-Ar out. Alright come on, it's time you met the military personnel and my crew."
***
Everyone sat nervously. The convicts to one side, the suit pilots on the other, with my crew in the center. I'd gone through all the introductions and I was waiting for someone to make the first move. After several minutes I sighed. "Listen, I'm not asking you to trust each other. However you could at least try to get to know each other."
"Is that an order, Sir?" Kicker asked.
"No." I replied.
"Yes, it is. Ever since we left the Freedom system some of you have been coming to me complaining that Tiger should have left well enough alone." Kyle said, standing up. "I'm sick of it. Shadow and Phantom, where would you be if Tiger hadn't vouched for you after your original team had tried to kill us? Lee and Slider, you two would still be pussyfooting around unable to tell each other how you felt if he hadn't interfered. Djinn, Cutter, Driver, and Hacker, you wouldn't even be pilots if not for Prowl-Ar. Finally Kicker, do you want me to go into detail about the reason you 'decided' to become a career soldier?" Kyle yelled.
"That is classified information." Kicker yelled, back.
"Information Prowl-Ar had the instant the Commander uploaded it to our computer system, when he took over our barracks." Shock said quietly.
"Before you get really mad I share everything with Fox and Drake." I explained.
"Don't think this is just about the pilots." Shock said, as he also stood up. "You four are so scared of what they,” Shock pointed at the pilots, "might think of you that you can't think of anything else. Of the four of you only one actually committed a crime and I think most of us can agree it was justified. Jay, you were railroaded but you served your time. Martin, you were assaulted and violated. Hiro, you were dishonored. Guess what, we all have events in our past we wish could be rewritten. You're teammates now so learn to get along."
"You know what? Kill each other for all I care. It'll be more work reorganizing the teams and the paperwork will be a real bitch, but that's my burden. Fox, Drake, Frost and Snowpaws let's leave the children to work out their differences. I'm thinking now is a very good time for some private family time."
We entered the lift as everyone stared at us.
"Do you think leaving them like that was a good idea?" Rin asked.
"Probably not, but they weren't going to do anything while we were still there." I said.
"Did you see the look on Kicker's face when Dad told him he didn't care if they killed each other?" Frost laughed.
"It certainly wasn’t what he wanted to hear." Kyle said.
"Papa, what did Kicker do?"
"Sorry, Frost, but Kicker is right, that information is classified. However he didn't do anything illegal just really embarrassing. He's still safe to be around." I said.
"Mahan, have they tried to kill each other yet?" Kyle asked.
"No, in fact your leaving seems to have broken the ice. Shadow and Phantom are telling Carl about Violet. Did you know she was dating both of them? No wonder Breakdown wasn't having any luck. Lee is chatting with Martin, mostly about Jay. Jay and Kicker are chatting about growing up on Earth. Everyone else has returned to what they were doing before you called the meeting."
"What about Hiro?" I asked.
He's retreated to a corner where he's watching over Martin and Jay."
"So Dad, what do you have planned?" Rin asked.
"I was thinking we go old school with a board game." Everyone just stared at me. "Bad idea?"
"What is a board game?" Shock asked.
"I don't know how to play chess or Go, and my skills at shogi are amateur at best. Those are the only board games I know of." Rin added.
"Um, I guess that mean's it's my pick." I knew I had my work cut out for me trying to pick a game that would be simple, but not overly childish, and fun. I couldn’t forget it had to be fun.

"Everyone, we will be entering the Greenwood system shortly. The Federation's information on this system is limited to a single survey mission. What we know is that it is at the edge of Federation Space, Bug Space, and Wild Space. So we need to be prepared for anything."
"What the Admiral is saying, is strap in and be prepared for action. Bridge out." Kyle said before turning toward me. "Sorry, Tiger, but the way you were going we'd have time to deal with any crisis and land before you finished."
"Get yourselves strapped in as well. We're dropping out of altered space. Now!" The Runner came out at the edge of the system. I boosted the forward thrust to maximum. "Mahan, are you detecting anything?"
"Yes, there seems to be a standoff, or there was one hours ago. What I'm picking up is radio chatter. It is too garbled to make out."
"Plot micro jump, for one astronomical unit out from the planet, full cloak."
"You can jump when ready."
We jumped into the system and the signal became clear.
"Do not fire, we come in peace seeking allies."
"I don't know what you're saying, but this is your last warning. This is a Federation outpost, leave now or I'll turn your hull into Swiss cheese."
"I repeat, this is the diplomatic cruiser Sanctu Dacat of the Draco-Leonar Alliance. Do not fire. We come in peace seeking allies against-"
Whoever was manning the outpost started firing. I boosted the engines to maximum. "Mahan, I'm going to be doing a full VR Computer diagnostic when this sequence is completed." I yelled.
"I already have one running." He replied.
"All personnel, we're about to enter a firefight. I went to the trouble of over designing and over powering this ship so that, despite its size it can be maneuvered like a starfighter. Brace yourselves for extreme maneuvers. Drake, contact the Sanctu Dacat and have them-"
"They're going down! Escape pods are launching." Shock yelled.
"Get me that freaking outpost."
"Channel open."
"Cease fire. That is a direct order from Admiral Nightiger of the Shadow Runner. You just fired on and destroyed a diplomatic envoy in a first contact situation."
"We're approaching the battle zone. Not that it was much of a battle." Frost said.
"Scan for survivors. Rin, scan the ship and make sure its reactors aren't about to explode. Shock send out a looped message telling the survivors we'll take them in. Make sure you use Mahan's translation functions. Kyle, you're in command. I'm going over to that outpost to wring some necks."
"Take Kicker and Hiro with you."
"Huh?"
"Kicker is career military and Hiro is a trained assassin. If you encounter something you can't handle alone they can provide back-up." Kyle explained.
I nodded, "Have them meet me on the launch deck."
As I exited the lift I was relieved to see they were both dressed in r flight suits which could double as space suits in a pinch. I pressed my palm against the locking mechanism and the shuttle's side airlock opened. I climbed through followed by the other two. I scrambled up the stairs to the cockpit and they continued to follow. "Kicker, take the turret." I said, as I pointed out the hand and foot holds to get up into it. "Hiro, watch the scanner. I don't want to hit a survivor making this situation worse." He nodded and we buckled in.
"Mahan, open the hangar doors." I eased the shuttle out and we headed for the outpost. As we got closer it became obvious it was a conglomeration of heavy transports welded together and covered in thrust nozzles to form a makeshift space station.
"Tiger, incoming suit from above, do I fire?" Kicker asked.
"Hold fire, but keep a lock on it." I toggled the radio to the Federation frequency. "Pilot, you are targeting a Federation Shuttle. Break off immediately."
"Shuttle, you are in restricted space with an unknown transponder code-"
"Priority system override, authorization Prowl-Ar zero, zero, one. Command, shutdown." I watched as the suit stopped adjusting its position and moved toward us on inertia alone.
"Retrieval drone has been sent for the pilot and his suit. Readings indicate he is the only human out there."
"Hey!" Kicker yelled at Mahan.
"Sorry, the only human not part of our group. I'm detecting three individuals near you in need of rescue. Their vitals are failing and their emergency oxygen supply has nearly expired. The drones won't reach them in time."
"Hiro, take the controls."
"I don't know how to fly a shuttle!"
"Kicker, can you fly?"
"I've trained in simulators."
"Good enough get down here and take the controls. Mahan will assist you. Hiro, come with me." We climbed down into the cargo section. “Hook up your tether and your umbilical." I commanded as I locked down the cockpit.
"What are you doing?" He asked.
I smiled, though I doubted he could see it with the helmets on. "I'm going for a little walk.” I said, as I grabbed a grappling gun and opened the back of the shuttle. The emergency shield snapped on holding the atmosphere inside. I nearly doubled over from the feelings that both Shock and Kyle sent toward me. If I had to put it into words it would have been "don't you dare!" I stepped through the shield, carefully judged the MAS suit's path and pushed off from the shuttle. "Hiro, be prepared to help the individuals I get into the shuttle." I radioed.
"You're insane." He replied.
"Why is it everyone keeps telling me that?" I laughed and took aim with the grappling gun. I pulled the trigger releasing the compressed gas in the spear. Since the only thing holding the spear to the gun was the release pin it rocketed away without pushing me backward. I swore to myself as the magnet attached to the lower leg instead of the main body. I'd misjudged the suit's speed and that kind of mistake could get me killed. The line reeled in and I made my way along the suit to the cockpit. I activated the emergency manual release and the pilot was blown out flailing wildly. I crawled inside. I watched as the former pilot stopped flailing and looked more like he was trying to swim away. I guessed he'd set the genetic lock. I plugged into the system. "Full system reboot, voice authentication 'I am Prowl-Ar Nightiger' report suit condition."
"Authorization recognized and accepted. All locks have been bypassed. Camera view restricted due to missing chest plate. All systems online."
I reached out and grabbed the pilot and the cockpit cover. The giant pincer claw replacing the right hand felt odd but otherwise the suit reacted faster than I expected. It had obviously been tuned well beyond specs. I'd be sure Rin got an opportunity to check it out. I turned and found the shuttle next to me. I pushed the pilot inside and secured the cover to the top of the shuttle.
"Mahan, plot optimal course for saving the most lives." Graphics popped up on my helmet visor and I immediately headed for the first individual.
After four grueling hours everyone that was alive was either on the ground or aboard the Runner. The Sanctu Dacat hadn't been a large ship and the survivors were quartered in one of the wing hangars. I landed in the main hangar and as I exited Mahan started breaking the suit down for storage.
"I don't care who the hell you are. You can't just-"
I guessed the man charging toward me had to be the suit's pilot. I laid him out cold. He was lucky I hadn't shifted. There were at least twelve casualties that I knew about. Twelve individuals on a mission to find help, killed by a single idiot with an inflated sense of duty. I looked around and found Shadow and Lee were closest to us. "You two, take this man to medical and let the Doctor know she is to give him the same care and attention she'd provide for Drake."
They shrugged and lifted the pilot between them.
"Mahan, have Kyle and Shock meet-"
"They're already on their way to meet with the delegation."
I ran to the lift hoping I wouldn't be too far behind their arrival.
The lift opened on chaos. The deck was littered with injured Dragons, including standard, groundling, and sacred as well as Leonar, Canins and even a few taurs. Currently they were all staring at Kyle, fortunately he was in his human form.
Timidly a dragon of the sacred class approached, kneeled and placed his snout against the deck.
"Pause game for the three players present. Tiger, what did you do now?" Kyle asked.
"Mahan?" I asked.
"You knew there would be consequences for drastically changing the course of the game. Wild Space seems to be one of them. You stated that you found the DNA that allowed Drake to shift on an uncharted planet in Wild Space. That re-designated Wild Space as Draconian."
"Kyle, everyone here will probably believe you are the Dragon God or at the very least his reincarnation if you shift."
"But I'm not the same character in this game."
"At least this time it isn't directly my fault, for once. You're the one that transformed into a full dragon in their council chambers." I said.
"What about you? You made sure video footage went out to the whole alliance saying that you're my mate. As long as I don't shift to any of my dragon forms-"
"Remember, in this game, you can only shift to your dragon form."
"Resume game." Fox ordered.
We both looked at Fox in confusion and he just grinned.
"Thank you, for coming to our rescue. We have traveled far from our home worlds seeking the aid of the reincarnated ancient dragon God in our struggle against the creatures invading our worlds."
"Why would you come here looking for some dragon God?" Kyle asked.
"Because of him." The dragon said, pointing at me."
"Wait, what?" I was so certain I had nothing to do with this story hook.
"One of our scout craft picked up this message." He held up a mini holographic recorder.
"Welcome to Fallow, I guess this is where I've been stationed. Last week I introduced you to my teammates. Today I'm going to show you the team that arrived before us. They're just over there. They are known as the tiger's team because their lead pilot's call sign is Tiger. With him are Fox and Drake. Eventually I'll interview them, but they just returned from patrol." The recording of Violet said.
"One of the scout’s crew, a student of the time before the Leonar Draco War, noticed something fascinating." Another image appeared this time of Kyle wrapped protectively around me in the council chambers. "Interesting is it not that these two people separated by thousands of years are identical?"
"An ancient relative perhaps? I'm certainly not that old."
"Is that so? Our spiritual leaders pose another possibility. While you are obviously the individual in the first video, the one in the second is the mate of our God and therefore immortal. Is it not possible that you are the one in the second recording, only you can't remember?"
"Doubtful, I'd know if he was mated to anyone other than Fox or myself." Kyle stated.
"So are you admitting to being the Dragon God?"
"What? No, I'm no God. Just ask anyone that knows me."
I glanced at Shock and smiled.
"He's a God." I said.
"Yes, definitely Godly." Fox agreed
Kyle spun around to glare at us. "That is not funny."
"If you're not a God then explain how you of all beings, arrived just as we needed to be saved?” a lion asked as he approached.
"A coincidence. We were assigned by our military leaders to come here in order to set up an outpost to prepare for the rest of our unit to arrive."
"Perhaps." The lion's attack was so swift and unexpected I barely had time to deflect the blow. I was still thrown back against the bulkhead.
Everyone froze and stared at Kyle, fully transformed, smoke issuing from his nostrils, pinning the lion to the deck, he roared in anger. "Never attack my mates!"
"Well shit, so much for not letting the dragon out of the bag." I muttered as I stood up. Nobody else dared to move. "Kyle, let him go. He did that just to provoke you, though I don't know why."
"The historical archives tell of how the Dragon God is very protective of his mate." The sacred dragon said.
"Listen, we really don't know what you're talking about. All three of us underwent an experimental procedure with the goal of making a better warrior to fight the Bugs." Shock said.
"I admit I collected genetic specimens from what I believed to be an extinct dragon lineage on a planet in wild space. I guess that's where you come from, but that was only a decade ago." I said, as I attempted to pull Kyle away from the lion.
"Is it possible we were wrong? If he is a God, maybe he crossed time and space to set things in motion for this very first meeting?" The Lion asked.
Kyle finally released the lion. "Are you trying to say that at some point in the future I become a God, travel back in time to introduce myself to your people just so that you would find us here?"
The lion laughed. "When you put it that way it does sound ridiculous, but you can't deny you look just like their Dragon God right down to your scars and markings."
“Sir, I have another possible theory.” A Wolftaur said, as he joined the other delegates. “You are both avatars created by the true Dragon God to come to our aid without directly interfering with our universe once again.”
"Maybe we are reincarnations, or something. I don't see how that is going to help you." I said.
"We've been watching the one called Violet's reports. While we can fight the invaders in space once they reach the ground our forces are quickly over powered." The Lion said.
"We are hoping to form a mutually beneficial alliance to fight our common enemy. We have plenty of warriors willing to fight with you. What we really need is the designs for your giant robots." The Sacred stated.
"They're not robots. They're suits that require pilots to operate them." Shock said.
Would it be possible to get some of these suits?" The Lion asked.
"We might be able to come to an arrangement, however that will require getting the right people to agree. The first step will be establishing communication between the leaders of our two nations. Mahan, what is the condition of their ship, can it be repaired?"
"Large portions are still air tight but the generators are shot. With enough time and work I may be able to reactivate the core for power generation and patch the hull but it'll never leave this system again."
"What about using it as a communications relay?"
"I'd have to get a closer look at their systems."
"Master!"
I was knocked off my feet once again as I was pounced by a black panther partially covered in bandages. "We knew you'd find a way home eventually."
"Scratch?" I asked in surprise. This couldn't be happening. He was older, much older than when he was in the House program.
"You look surprised? Oh, it's the time dilation effect it's been 14 years for us since you had to return to your original universe. House told us about how you'd caught a mysterious illness and rather than risk our lives you went back there. He said just after you left the portal collapsed and we may never see you again. We, sort of continued going to the slave auctions. Evan registered as your proxy buyer, we’ll accept any punishment you thing we deserve, but we only bought those that most needed our help, like you did for us."
He paused to catch his breath.
"I- I'm not sure what to say."
"Oh, House's shield covers the whole area now and the village is growing nicely. Two years ago House connected to a new realm with an Ancient Ghost Dragon named Char. He told us how he met you, but you seemed to have memory problems and you'd lost Kyle and Shock. He also told us about Master Kyle's son, Frost. That's when we started looking for you. Talon was so excited when information on you popped up in his realm."
"Scratch, how many of your brothers were on that ship?" I interrupted.
“Pyre, Raze, Talon and Stripes plus Blacky and me of course. I know Talon and Stripes made it into an escape pod. The captain charged them with setting up a temporary refuge on the planet. Pyre and Raze were able to portal out, I made sure of that myself." He glanced back at the wounded. "Blacky was wounded pretty badly, I couldn't leave without him so I remained behind. The medics say he isn't going to wake up."
"Mahan?"
"Scanning. He's right ordinary medical treatment isn't going to save him. I'm dispatching drones to move him, you know where."
"Is Mahan like House?" Scratch asked.
I had to keep from laughing at the question. "Yes he is very similar to House. Mahan, begin the process of converting their ship into a space station. Kyle-"
"I'll stay here and help with the wounded. I'll send the ones they've written off your way."
"Shock?"
"I'm going to go find Frost and Rin. This turn of events is going to take some diplomatic spin to explain, especially to them."
"Wait! Computer, pause game in this section." The full impact of things suddenly hit me. This wasn't a locked private game.
"What's wrong, Tiger?" Kyle asked.
"I know this feeling, he's terrified." Shock exclaimed.
"Computer, rewind events to where NPC Mahan says he needs to inspect the alien ship. Erase all actions in this section after that point. Check security protocols on locked games and report reason for locked characters in current game."
"Characters can be used because they are native to this realm."
"Computer, all characters in locked files are forbidden in open games. Remove connection between MAS game and House game."
"Characters and portals removed." The computer replied.
"Would you mind explaining what is going on?" Shock asked.
"What reaction do you think people would have if Bit showed up in this game? Even fourteen years older someone would do the math and?" I asked "Before you answer also take into account we announce the opening of a school on the station."
"Oh. Oooooooh that would be bad. Really, really bad." Shock replied.
"It is a game it's not like we'd do that in reality." Kyle pointed out.
"It doesn't matter. There is no recovery from a scandal like that. It would also call into question our adoption of Rin."
"I don't care what you do just hurry up and get yourselves on the ground so that I can take the Runner back to Earth to resume being the last line of defense. I'm sick of playing at being myself. It's boring and a bit degrading." Mahan stated crossly. "Once that happens I'll remove the code that makes things worse every time you modify the game in your favor."
"Resume game." I said. I turned to Shock, "Get those that are injured and can be healed to the infirmary. Kyle get those that are alive but not expected to live to the Evolver. I want to save all the lives we can.

I sat back relieved that the negotiations were over. We now had an alliance with the Draco-Leonar Alliance. The negotiator, a Canin Corgi was the only individual with me.
"Admiral Nightiger, now that we have an alliance, I'd like to ask why you wanted to limit contact with us."
"I want you to remember this. Humans have a bad history of breaking alliances and treaties to suit their own greed. While I made it seem like I was being xenophobic the truth is I was trying to protect you against the possibility of a second war after the Bugs have been defeated."
"But you're human. Are you saying we shouldn't trust you?"
"I'm barely human anymore, but yes, until you get to know me as an individual you shouldn't trust me."
The Corgi nodded, "What of the pilot that destroyed our ship?"
"He is being held in the brig, why?"
"My captain would like to meet him."
"That wouldn't be a good idea. It'll color his case when he goes to trial."
"The Captain just wants to know why he fired on us. If he understands and regrets that his actions killed thirteen innocent individuals, we'd prefer he not be punished."
I just stared at the Corgi in shock.
"You have to understand our alliance was forged after three centuries of war. By the end we all came to realize that the only way to end the war was to forgive each other. If the pilot is remorseful it would be a waste to punish him when we are fighting for our very existence."
I nodded, "I'll contact his representative and then get back to you."
"Thank you, Admiral." He said, as he slid out of the seat. Headed out the door where a drone was waiting to escort him back to the survivor's quarters.
I sat there wondering, if maybe it was time to switch to a new game.
"Admiral, Rin would like to speak with you." Mahan informed me.
"Where is she?" I asked as I stood up.
The door slid open and Rin entered. I collapsed back into my seat. "Is something wrong?"
"I'm just wondering when we're going to be landing? The pilots are getting a bit restless being confined to the ship."
"Just the pilots, or are the crew planning a mutiny as well?"
"Not yet, but we may be getting there." Shock said, as he entered followed by Kyle and Frost. “It’s not so much that we have a problem being on the ship, but . . .”
“What Papa is trying to say is that with all the people on board you’re being pulled in multiple directions at once.” Frost said.
I sighed. "Shock, you should be the one doing this, not me."
"Who me? I'm just a young pilot with no diplomatic skills what so ever."
I groaned. "We're stuck here until their ship is repaired enough to act as a relay station between the Federation and the Alliance. Then we’ll be able to land and offload the suits and new hangars."
"I hope it doesn't take too long." Rin said.

I watched as Flare finished welding his cobbled together station to the back of the Sanctu Dacat Station. He wasn't exactly a complete idiot. His orders had been to fire on anyone not transmitting the correct codes.
His group had been surveying Greenwood and were just waiting a transport to pick them up and move them to their next assignment. From Mahan's scans we knew there were four suits on the planet. Of those four one was an aquatic suit sticking to the rivers and seas, another from its movements had to be an air type and the third was likely a ground type suit. They stayed within a few hundred miles of each other grouping together every three days.
The final suit seemed to be an outcast from the group, but we had the most information about it. It was a custom black enhanced suit and the pilot, call sign "Wolf" specialized in environmental science, however he had extensive medical training as well. He'd settled in the Alliance refugee camp and was giving medical aid where required.
"Admiral, we're ready to begin a full test of the station's integrity."
"Begin test Commander."
I already knew that the station would be fully functional. I'd seen the game cheats Fox used to make sure of it.
"We are now pressurized and there is no signs of leaks."
"We'll give it an hour before we transfer the rest of your crew."
"Are you sure you'll be able to land a ship that large on a planet?"
"Landing is the easy part, it's getting it back in to space that's difficult."
"I just want to be sure those wanting to join the ones already on the planet will be able to do so safely."
"Don't worry, they'll be fine. I'll contact you again in an hour. However, if anything fails let me know immediately so we can get it fixed."
"Understood Admiral, Sanctu Dacat base out."
Two hours later I was in the rear seat of the tandem merge pod. "Are you sure about this? Kyle asked.
"Since I'm not supposed to enter merge, even here in VR, it has to be you. I'll provide back up if you need it."
Kyle sighed, "All personnel we are about to make planetary entry strap in and prepare for turbulence." Kyle put on the merge helmet "One last thing, you could land this thing without the merge system, couldn't you?"
"We are go for merge." Mahan said, before I could reply. Seconds later I felt the Runner start to move.
I leaned back and cleared my mind incase the Runner decided I was needed as well.
***
"So are you going to answer my question?" Kyle asked as he removed his helmet once we were hovering over the ocean.
"Yes I could have, but using the merge system is safer. And you did spectacularly." The pod opened and we crawled out. Then it retracted into the deck with our regular stations sliding into place.
"Mahan, full projection and give me the controls at my station." The front and side walls seemed to disappear as a real rime projection from outside the ship formed. A blue line projected out from the left side directing me towards the Alliance camp. I centered up on the line and nudged the thrusters moving us forward.
"I wonder if they're ready for us?" Shock asked, as I increased the speed a bit more.
"They were informed we were coming down." Kyle replied.
"Yeah, but you didn't mention it would be the Runner." Rin quickly pointed out.
As we drew closer to shore I realized just how big the trees were. They would make mature redwoods look like saplings.
"Mahan, this looks familiar."
"It was cut from an older game."
"Ah, that means giant creatures again."
"Giant to humans but not to mobile suits." Mahan pointed out.
"Contact the Alliance camp."
"This is Commander Fleetfoot, what can I do for you Admiral?"
"I need you to group you people together. I'm going to use my ship's weapons to clear a perimeter trench, two roads, a small air base, and a larger area for a main base and I don’t want to injure any of your people."
“How do I know this isn't some sort of trap?"
"Because I'm coming over to your base to ensure your safety." Shock announced.
"And who are you?" Fleetfoot asked.
"Shock Nightiger, Admiral Nightiger’s husband." He replied, as he stood up. "I've cut the audio. Tiger, don't misfire."
"Don't worry I'll show those Federation fools the correct way to set up a base."
Five hours later I finally landed the Runner
"Mahan, what's left?"
"You've completed a trench in a twenty five mile radius with a quarter mile clearance on both sides. Roads running from north to south and east to west have also been cleared. Five mile radius sections have been cleared in the center of the area as the primary base, halfway along the northern road for an air base and half way along the western road to act as an auxiliary maintenance and medical base. The Alliance camp is to the south east section and all areas have their own perimeter trench."
"Great, but that's not what I asked."
"I'm just giving context so that you don't try to argue about doing more tonight. To answer your question I need to generate cement blocks, fencing and poles to form perimeter walls. Then Hangars and barracks units for suits and pilots. If I feel there is time I will generate barracks and a small hospital unit for the Alliance camp."
"What about-"
"No, that is more than enough for now. You can deal with the next projects once the current selection is completed. Now I suggest you get some sleep. I've reassembled Shadow team and Kicker team's suits. Shadow team are on guard duty here and Kicker's team is providing cover at the Alliance base.
"Mahan, is there any chance we can hire that medic and retire the otter drone? He's much nicer." Shock asked. As he entered my office.
"Not going to happen." Mahan stated.
"Ah well, it was worth a try. So Tiger, do you think you've scared those survivors enough? I swear it seemed like it was raining the wrath of god all day long."
"The clearing phase is complete. Tomorrow we start the building phase." Mahan stated.
"Tiger, are you alright?"
"Jus' tired. Had to be sure every shot perfect."
"I was kidding. I knew you'd never shoot me or anyone else for that matter."
"Fox, assist him in getting to bed. I may have pushed him too far today."
"Mahan!" Kyle yelled, as he also entered the office.
I wanted to defend myself. I'd been trying not to push myself so hard, but obviously I failed.

I slowly set the Runner down at the air field. The hangars for Shadow Team's suits were in place along with their barracks, a brand new flight tower, and hangars for the two MAS support fighters.
"Admiral, this is Shadow. Shadow team is ready to launch."
"Tiger, Shock and I are ready to launch in the support fighters."
"I want both of you on the Runner as soon as you get those fighters parked. Shadow team you are clear to launch." I watched as the three suits circled the area once and then set down in front of their hangars.
"Shadow team is ready to redeploy to the Main Base." Kicker reported.
"Drake and Fox you are clear to launch."
"We'll be back shortly." Drake replied.
“Kicker team, you are cleared to take up station at the Main Base.
"Admiral, this is Cutter, my team is on the elevator and we’re ready to deploy to the Alliance Camp for the night."
"Prowl-Ar, this is Jay, Carl and I have the tanks on the elevator also ready to deploy to the Main Base."
“Are Martin and Hiro with you?” I asked.
“Hiro is with Carl, but otherwise yes.”
"Elevator is in motion."
"We'll see you tomorrow, Sir." Hiro replied.
"Enjoy your taste of freedom, just be really careful. We still need to assemble the fences."
"Understood, Hiro out."
"How are you feeling?" Mahan asked.
"A bit anxious, but that's because I'm responsible for everyone and we don't have the fences up yet."
"I suggest for tomorrow you prioritize the fence around the Alliance Camp followed by the main base, the hospital outpost, the airfield and finally the twin outer fences."
"That's going to take more than a day with only the four teams."
"There's the scientist at the Alliance camp you can press into service, Carl, Hiro, and Jay have completed suit training and Martin is getting there. You could also temporarily put alliance personnel in the unclaimed suits."
"I suppose that's an option."
"Tiger, we're on the elevator and we're coming up.” Drake announced.
"Lock it down for the night. Tomorrow's going to be busy so I'm calling it a day."
***
We slowly approached the Alliance camp. I was surprised to see that a large number of the concreate blocks had already been maneuvered into place.
"Bonjour Amiral, j'espère que cela ne vous dérange pas que je prenne l'initiative et que je commence à assembler le mur?”
“Pause game. Mahan, is the translator running?”
“Yes, it seems the computer did not translate that so that you and the audience will realize that Captain Delacroix, Wolf, is speaking French. Return to the game and everything should be resolved.”
“Resume game.” I watched as my avatar’s hand reached up and double tapped behind my ear as if checking my translation nanite colony.
“Sorry, it seems there was a disconnect in the translation nanites. The problem is now fixed. I’ll just loop in a translation of what Wolf said.” Mahan stated.
“Hello Admiral, I hope you don't mind my taking the initiative and starting to assemble the wall?”
"Not a problem and please, when I'm not on the ship, use my call sign of Tiger."
"Of course sir, and my call sign is Wolf."
Wolf's suit was a black Enhanced type with gold accents and the eye camera's glowed red. "So Wolf, I take it you want to protect the civilians?"
"Yes Sir, I'll sleep easier knowing we're safe from attack."
"Aside from Bugs what are we looking at?" I asked.
"I've been here since boot camp and there hasn't been any sign of Bugs. In my opinion the planet's primary predators scare them."
"What predators?" Frost asked, as we started to shift blocks into position.
"Spiders. Spiders that have to be ten times the size of my suit."
I nodded. It was rather obvious Wolf didn't like spiders so I figured they were likely much smaller. Still, he was an environmental scientist sent to survey the planet so I'd be stupid not to believe him. "Anything else?"
"There are six legged herbivores. I haven’t ascertained whether they are reptilian or mammalian yet. They’re not very intelligent, but they do have the ability to blend in with their environment. However they are easy enough to see with the suit’s infrared cameras. They're really only dangerous if you disturb one and it runs toward you instead of away." Wolf replied.
"Tiger, if we're going to get this fence finished today, you need to spend less time talking and more time working. Now get working." Drake ordered.
"You're in command and you let him order you around like that?" Wolf asked.
"He's my husband, and he does have a point."
We spent the rest of the morning in relative silence as we moved the massive blocks into position. I was impressed with Wolf's performance. He was always ready to help when needed but otherwise stayed out of the way.
"Tiger, this is Phantom, in the control tower. We have a heavy transport shuttle inbound."
"Patch me through."
"Channel is open."
"Shuttle, what is your purpose and destination?"
"We're here to pick up the recon team for transport to their next assignment."
"Understood, acting commander of Greenwood base, out."
"Damn," I thought, "The computer has actually put a lot of thought into Wolf's character, to bad we're going to be losing him."
Half an hour later Phantom contacted me again. "Sir, the shuttle just took off. They didn't check in or anything. Didn't they have a member of their team at the Alliance camp?"
"Get the Alliance station for me."
"Connection open."
"Sanctu Dacat Station, are you in communication with the shuttle that just launched?"
"Yes sir, their trigger happy pilot is transferring over now."
"Link me in. Recon shuttle, you've left a pilot behind."
"We don't want him, so he's your problem now."
"Wait, I have to say something to the Admiral." Flare said.
"Is that who I'm talking to? Wow an Admiral that's so cool."
"Hey Admiral Asshole, remember me? You stole my suit and then nearly killed me. Guess what? I'm about to complete my job and get a healthy bonus for killing all of you. Lucky for me the station is in the perfect position to drop on . . ."
The area was suddenly lit up as Mahan fired one of the Runner's heavy cannons.
"This is Alliance Station, the shuttle has been destroyed no survivors. No damage to the station. That was truly precision marksmanship."
"Mahan did you make that shot or-". Two taps sounded on my coms. "Slider, if you keep saving our lives like that I'll have to promote you."
"I'll make sure to miss next time." He replied.
"I doubt that, Admiral Nightiger out." I cut all long range communications. "Construction team, break for lunch. Lee, you're on watch."
"Don't worry, if I see any spiders they're dead."
"Lee, if they're smaller than your suit, don't waste the ammo." Drake insisted.
I heard a loud sigh but Lee didn't complain further.
As we descended from our suits the Refugees slowly approached looking at us in reverence.
"Drake, we may have a problem. I need you to keep the crowd busy while I talk to Wolf."
"Shock, I want you and Frost to watch Tiger for me."
"He's an environmental scientist do you really think he won't notice a fox and an otter watching him? Don't worry, if he doesn't have the answers I'm looking for, I'll be more than enough to deal with him."
I slowly approached Wolf. He was sitting on the ground eating his lunch. I almost felt sorry for him since it seemed all he had was ration bars. "I'm sorry about your friends."
"They weren't my friends. I was added to the team just before we came here. They were more interested in having fun than doing real science anyway."
I nodded. "Were you sent here to spy on us?
"No, I was sent here to study the environment and lifeforms that might exist. Until Fox landed and warned us you were going to land I hadn’t expected to see anyone other than . . . my former team mates."
"Are you going to try and kill me or my family?"
"Never!" Wolf yelled.
I was surprised by the conviction in his tone, almost as though he was trying to say he was willing to sacrifice himself first.
"I mean, no that would be against my oath as a medic."
That wasn't entirely true. "Can I trust you?"
"I'd like to think you can, but I doubt you do considering everything that's happened. Are you satisfied I'm telling you the truth?"
"What?" I asked.
He sighed. "I study plants and animals, the rumor spreading amongst the survivors is that you can change into an animal so I'm guessing you can tell when someone is lying to you?"
I was surprised for a moment. "Listen, you've been honest with me, and it looks like you're stuck here under my command, so why don't you join us, at least for lunch. I guarantee we can do better than ration bars."
"I- I guess if isn't too much trouble."
"It's no trouble at all." I held out my hand, he took it, and I helped him to his feet. I reeled backward and would have fallen if he hadn't still had ahold of my hand. "My god you're tall." He had to be at least a foot taller than my on six foot height.
He looked embarrassed, "I know, I'm a freak."
I shifted to my anthro form. At eight foot I was now looking down, but nowhere near as low as I usually had to. "I don't think you're a freak."
Wolf laughed. "I really wish I could do that."
"Of course, you're a furry. You'll fit right in with the rest of us freaks."
"Do you really think so?"
I was confused for a moment. There seemed to be more hope in his response than there should have been. Still I'd have to watch the medic. Otherwise he might become the next fan favorite character. “Yeah, I do.” He dropped my hand as he must have suddenly realized he was still holding it.
“Um, sorry about that.”
“You didn’t hear me complaining.” Yes, I’d really need to be careful of this character. He had the broken look in his eyes that all of my crew had. If I wasn’t careful I might be tempted to uplift another NPC stray. “Come on, let me introduce you to my husbands, well my other husband since you’ve met Fox, my kids, and the children under my command.”
At that Wolf laughed. It was an open and honest sound almost seeming completely out of character. Fox was right, Wolf would make a better doctor than our otter drone. Now I’d just have to convince Mahan of that fact.
***
Note: The Jordan/Wolf character is based on a living individual who has given me permission to use him as a character.
I don’t remember his description, but his personality is just sexy af....
The new planet is not forbidden for human players, or is it?
Likely the next transport would have over 100 "arachnologists" on board, that all manipulated the placement system that way.
And then all get eaten by a swarm of angry spiders. ;-)
That I can comment on, as the next transport has arrived and it is the Fallow Base unit. Now known as the Greenwood base unit. I can also say that Wolf gets attacked and has to be rushed to the ship for medical attention.
