I need to provide some context. The SCSM has an extensive collection of antique telescopes. I would, based upon memory alone, guess that they had around 50 on display. It is a major exhibit there.
Sir Isaac newton was the inventor of the Newtonian telescope, which took us from refractors and the limits of making a large, perfect lens to mirrors, which are generally easier to make. It also corrected some color aberrations inherent to refractors, if I recall correctly. Because they are "folded" telescopes as well with light passing in both directions in the tube, the length of the telescopes were greatly shortened. Many of the refractor telescopes on display had tubes well over 10 feet, which means that there are alignment and bending issues as the tube sags or just changes temeprature.
So the link is to the telescopes, not the state.
As for why bottle caps, I almost have to say "Just because." This was a commissioned piece, and Ms. Right presumably selected that medium. There was no indication of a reason for the selection. As she is living in SC, perhaps there is a link between the bottle caps and the state.
