IT'S HERBIE!
Reading the Wiki page, I was surprised at how long the franchise has run and how successful it was in the beginning. The first movie brought in the equivalent of over US$300M today and overall US$747M in current dollars (adjusted for inflation).

I bet you and I are similar in age. I remember seeing the first two movies in the theater as first run films in my youth. I have to admit that I enjoyed them.
I am sure they are long gone, but I wish I could recall the movie theaters where we went to see movies. Surprisingly, not one was in a mall back then. I am 90$+ certain that one was a converted play/vaudeville theater. The other was likely purpose built in the late 1950s to early 1960s and was almost brand new back then.
Also one of my favorite TV and movie cars, along with the Knight Rider, the Dukes' General Lee, Speed Racer's Mach 5, and the FAB-1 from Thunderbirds.
