De novis modis existentiae, J. Obradeen (1749)
Among the more interesting works of the Cornish mystic “John Obradeen" is the 1749 monograph titled De novis modis existentiae (On New Modes of Existence), commonly referred to as the NME. Styled by its detractors as “the enemy (NME) of reason", De novis modis notoriously begins with the cryptic passage, “O King of the King who is King with the King under King…". Though long believed to be a dedication to the duumvirate of George III and James IV under the Emperor of the Sunlit Isles, the passage was later found by occultist Leonhard Poussier to be the first half of an invocation to the King-in-Spirit and the Spirit King, appearing under the sign of King-Above-All, the Sun Unconquerable.
In spite of its whimsical, often nonsensical tone, De novis modis is known for presenting descriptive and accurate prophecies of future events. Napoleon's “Massacre of the Tribunes" and the Celestial and Harmonious Peace of 1901 number among its more famous predictions--though among the occult, the Shadowing of the Sun and the Word-Wars take prominence. But one prophecy looms above all, since, if fulfilled, it would spell the end of existence as we know it: the unshackling of the Buried Lithophage.
The book predicts that a “prince of fire", a secret devotee to the Lithophage, will discover the leaden catacombs where the Lithophage lies buried. In an act of hubris, the prince will attempt to extract the Lithophage's power. But after years of such treatment, the Lithophage's chains will weaken, and it will break free, consuming all in its path. Even its leaden shell will not hold against it.
The prophecy is unique in that it does not specify a date--merely a way to identify the “prince of fire". Obradeen closes it out with these mysterious words: “I am you; we are he."
