There's plenty of precedent from the late 1800's and early 1900's, after a fad for Egyptology earlier in the century gave rise to a proliferation of stories featuring stolen jewels, lost civilizations, ancient curses and so on. Bram Stokers 'The Jewel of Seven Stars' (1903) with its two variant endings (bad ending for jaded and cynical European market, good ending for irrationally optimistic American market) comes to mind. Or for something a bit more modern and 1920's, HP Lovecraft's 'Under The Pyramids' as ghost-written for Harry Houdini.
