Well atleast they sorted things out^-^
I feel like those who are just looking at it from a point of view about the necklace question are only seeing something that is surface level, and I also feel like it's not quite fulfilling enough to say that there's a previous problem between Taylor and Dan, despite that being clear. Neither of those things are incorrect under any sense of the imagination.
Here's how I see it: the necklace is something that is an almost sacred bond to them, in that it not only represents their connection, but also represents Daniel's ability to be confident in his choice of being with Joel in the first place. Back in the first story, Daniel doesn't show the necklace, and initially dismisses a notion of closeness towards Joel by playfully saying that him holding the necklace after the whole time is gay - this basically makes the initial implication that he doesn't hold much credence in that as a memento for them both. We as the readers know that Joel has very clear feelings for Dan, and those feelings escalate when they're in the bed the first time. However, when Dan leaves, he shows part of the necklace himself. This is something that's -extremely- important to me in my eyes; it shows that Daniel has a large emotional confidence in Joel that he'd wanted to have in the first place, but wasn't sure if he could immediately (otherwise: why would he want to know if Joel liked him the same way that he liked Joel?).
So, the necklace bears an incredible importance in their relationship. In my eyes, Taylor is trying to imply some sort of triviality between the necklaces, basically wondering if it's a bother, and that's a clear no-no for Daniel. Taylor's shot back was a rude thing to do, no question - there's no justifying that and based off of the expression, he did it with exceptional deliberation. Earlier in the comic during the introduction, Joel mentions that Kate does a good job mediating things between them, and also mentions that Taylor can be a bit of a hard time. Joel also very casually throws a love you out there that seems to catch Dan off guard (which is also coincidentally towards Taylor, so yay, even more tension).
I am hoping we get to see a bit more right from Daniel as to why he got so upset in the first place, but the above is my personal speculation.
By the way, it is fantastic to see you back, Zeta! I hope all is well. :D
The point of disconnect is that, at the end of pg13, Dan expresses that he felt he should have known about the incident, which doesn't make sense, since it was an accident that meant a lot to Joel but ended up being fixed quickly with help, so there's nothing to be angry about or that needed to have a flag raised. It's not like the necklace was permanently lost, nor that Joel was unfazed by it, nor that Joel voluntarily gave it away - nothing that would have actually affected their relationship. The issue continues to the next page, where Dan specifically voices that what's annoying him is that Joel isn't telling him things, except that the trigger was nothing to be angry about or that needed to have a flag raised, hence the disconnect.
There's nothing for Joel to apologize for unless there's an expectation that he tells Dan everything about his life, which is silly. Right now it's all one big overreaction from Daniel. The question is whether it's jealousy, anxiety, an expression of self-deprecation, or actually a sign of being too controlling of a partner.
My thoughts: while it was accidental, it opens the door for a situation of "what if" with regards to the necklace -- what if it wasn't found? Would Joel have opted out of telling Daniel in the first place? And, perhaps the trickiest case of it all -- how is it that Taylor knew about it but Daniel did not? Taylor and Joel hanging out makes a ton of sense because they are friends, but Joel masking the fact that he lost the one memento he seemed to cherish the most around them... that's another tricky situation. Additionally, if there wasn't some sort of secrecy behind the whole situation in the first place, why would Taylor use it as a response to Dan's defensive response?
The consideration of Taylor believing that the necklaces as trivial is admittedly me tunneling a bit - however, something else to look to: Joel's response to Taylor mentioning the necklace and saying "that's not how it really happened..." makes me wonder just exactly why that would be said in the first place.
How I see it: Taylor mentions this knowing that Joel does in fact have something to hide, knowing that he was the one to help find the necklace (and not someone else) - this also stacks up with the fact that Joel and Taylor seem to have a rather noticeable closeness, or at least, enough of one for Joel to say "I love you all the same." after Taylor mentioned that he was missing all of his calls. Furthermore... if his necklace was lost campus and Joel says that's not how it happened, then - what did?
All fun in a comic's interpretation. Let's keep bouncing thoughts and stuff. :D
I think you're attributing too much by saying Joel "masked" the situation by not telling Daniel. Honestly, in real life, if a potential problem arises, do you immediately notify everyone potentially affected, or do you try to quickly fix it before it becomes an actual problem? Telling someone there's an issue before you try resolving it when that person can't do anything about it anyway only serves to create unnecessary drama and worry. There's no need to call it "secrecy" if it was an everyday problem (temporarily misplacing something) that was resolved quickly.
I don't think there's anything to hide about the situation, though I completely see how Taylor might have said it the way he did. He finds out that Dan has a negative reaction to prodding about the necklaces, then makes the situation SOUND worse that it actually was. Joel tries to correct him, but the damage to Dan is already done. It's the difference between "Joel misplaced the necklace and confided in Taylor" and "Joel was separated from the necklace and asked friends for help, Taylor being the one to find it". Big difference.
I guess I can level with you on your last point. In any case, let's see what happens on the next page, haha.
