Actually there are plans to improve Humans by implanting mechanic parts, like amputation appliance which are even bette then the organic original. But such parts can't be build, yet . There are some ideas about genetic modifications as well, but there are discussions about both kinds of improvement.
Technically there already are implants to implove our bodies and lives. Like pacemakers and I'd even consider metal rods for broken bones implants. This picture was more about implants that don't so much fix us but play to our vanity, like a cellphone, you don't need it to live but some people can't live without them.
It does raise some interesting ethical questions, and personally I think the line is really drawn when the human body is imploved for vanities sake rather than survival or normallity. Like cosmetic surgery, that was orignally (as far as I know) used to fix peoples apprearance from natural or otherwise (burns, deep wounds) disfigurements, but its also used now to remove wrinkles, different shaped nose, bigger breasts and change a healthy persons appearance for no reason other than they want to look different.
Yes, those implants for fixing bones are a great thing. A friend had one of those. Thanks to the implant his bone healed perfectly.
I saw an experimental mechanical Exo-Skeleton by Lockheed Martin for military use. What would be if there would be mechanic muscles inside the Human body instead of putside to support the natural ones. People like Stephen Hawking could live a normal life that way and since the mechanical miscles would be hidden under the skin, they wouldn't look different.
And as for the Exo-Skeleton: Those could be very useful to construction workers or fire fighters.
I remember there were some people thinking about a data chip implanted under the skin as pass, driving lisence and bank-card.
I've seen pretty many people who would probaply implant a cellphone ASAP. I wouldn't.
And the cosmetic aspect: I have a nice collection of scars myself IRL. One of my biggest scars is in almost in the middle of my face. But I don't want to get rid of them, because they remind me how much I can take. I'm actually kinda proud of them :3
There has actually been talk about implanting cell phones and/or GPS systems in people (or children), which is incredible on the one hand, but scary on the other.
It really is scary what they're just doing now with the technology you use. Your personal information is now someone else's profits, and younger people are growing up thinking this is acceptable because the services they use are free. I really shudder thinking of the day when they implant cellphones into human beings.
