Most of them are Holbein but I have some Windsor & Newton and L'Aquarelle tubes.

Darn you and your Holbein... lol. I've been playing with Grumbacher, except some Quinacridone Red in W&N for some purples/fur tones.

Luckily i'm just borrowing them from my BF who hasn't done art in years and is letting me use his watercolour supplies. I didn't really know what was good/bad or have any thoughts on what to even start with outside i knew i wanted tubes of paint, not pallettes. It is really cool to try other brands and specific blends of colours. Some of them are just so pretty! :D

Palettes are actually good for watercolor painting, but you're thinking of cakes. Watercolor cakes are... really annoying. I suggest taking watercolor tubes and squeezing them into a palette that closes airtight(a Master's Touch palette is pretty good... like 5 bucks for 33 paint wells), and letting the paint dry on its own. I do it, it helps prevent the paint from drying in the tube. Most tube paints, like Holbein, W&N, Grumbacher, and [i]especially[/i] M Graham paints, will dry fairly tamely, and they re-wet very easily. If they crack, a little honey or glycerine(not too much though, too much of a good thing for either one.) after you get them fully wet again it will help prevent that.

Well, yes, cakes, however here, when you buy a tray of cakes it is often called a palette or sometimes a "dry palette", due to it usually already being in a palette tray of its own. Really depends on the brand and store. I've seen people do crazy things with cakes but they feel so weird to me. I love mixing "wet" paint on the go much more than having to spend time drenching paint patties lol.

I already work from a palette (sometimes two) of my own, using the tubes. While my palette isn't airtight, i've not had any issue with them getting far too dry because i wrap it and i use it often enough that they never sit there for more than a week or two before being used up or even used a little.

While i am new to using them regularly, i've taken some courses and I grew up around painters so i have a lot of insight into the world of watercolours (and other media) and some tips and tricks that come with it.

My biggest thing right now for me is experimenting between wet and dry application and just trying to figure out my style with them. (Renamon was dry application, https://www.sofurry.com/view/1299535 was wet, https://www.sofurry.com/view/1324917 was a mix of both. It's super fun just letting things flow and experimenting :3 It feels very freeing! I have so many plans to make more splotchy critters~)

I never could get the hang of splotchy and wet-on-wet stuff... I also don't really do it often so I just need to do it more and get used to it I think. I've been drawing most of my knowledge from Sumi-painting, but because I prefer a more illustrative style I just go for more dry applications than anything else...

I let my paints dry fully in my palette though.

I find wet on wet to be really fun because you never know how exactly its going to turn out and it lets you play with colour a lot more. :3

Mine dry full in the palette as well, though i only put very small amounts so they get used up really quickly.

Ah yeah. I just use what i need and keep things in the tube haha.

I tried that, but I have too much of an illustrative style. I've been trying to experiment a little with papers lately, this is my latest attempt... not really sure I'm enjoying the cold-pressed texture though. Might go back to hot-press.

Aaaah i see i see. Yeah they are very different. I'm still trying different stuff myself.
