you want crictics? no problem^^
1. not that much shadows behind the cheeks of cougar...it looks like he wear a mask.
2. more shadows at the whole picture...that it looks less like two dimensional.
3. it could be a little smoother...the picture looks a little angularly.
4. Im pretty sure your neck is not that long...
5. and last but not least...you should draw a little more muscles for ryan...his arms lok so weak on the picture.
But i like the picture^^
1. maybe it does look like that, but I was thinking it would work due to wear that strip of lighting was coming from.
2. I tried to get as detailed with the shadows as I could.
3. That will come with practice (remember I only just started a month or two ago.).
4. I was trying to base off my real self and maybe overextended a little bit. But my neck isn't short I can guarantee that.
5. You haven't seen me in RL haven't you? I'm pretty scrawny. I will agree I can tone it up just a little bit, but I'm not the kind of person to appreciate being way bulky on muscle. Besides, if my arms were weak like that I'd never be able to even lift that sword, let alone wield it with one arm.
Thanks though, I'll keep your tips in mind.
1 & 2. The problem with the shadows here is that you basically just put them where ever there was a line and kept them very thin. Take a look at things around you and take notes of how the shadows move and fall on different objects. And the reason Cougar looks like he is wearing a mask is not because of the shading. It's because of the line art around his entire face. It looks awkward and is unnecessary.
3. This is probably just because it was transferred to Photoshop from a scanner. This tutorial explains how to get line art on it's own layer: http://mag83.deviantart.com/art/Line-Art-On-Its-Own-Layer-112710341
Also, I think you might have used the PaintBucket. Avoid that.
4. Your neck might not be short, but it shouldn't be that tall either. It wouldn't be that bad if the shoulders didn't come up so high. Just something to watch for in future pieces.
5. I'm not sure if I understood what you said in this last one. But definitely add some (even a tiny bit) of muscle to the character. Either that or change the type of sword he wields to something lighter and smaller.
Now for my own critique, and I'll try to keep it as polite as possible.
First off, you need to gain a better understanding of basic anatomy. Not right this minute mind you, but along the road. Just take some time to study the people around you. Or go online and look through images. I would also suggest getting an anatomy book if you're really serious about art.
Secondly, I don't think you need to color your artwork at the moment. Work on improving some of the basic skills and color traditionally (which will help when you color digitally) for now.
Yeah, this comment was way longer than I wanted it to be. Anyway, I hope you found some of this helpful.
3. First off I spent like seven hours coloring it piece by piece because the paint bucket won't work for the piece, and the selector tool is crap. Besides, I don't like the paint bucket tool in the first place.
4. I'm aware of that....
5. Changing the sword brings a bad continuity error to my story so no. Also I already know my anatomy sucks, I don't mean this in a bad way but give it a rest.
To put it simply I barely started Trying to draw like less than a month before I did this. I haven't done this for years like you probably have (lovely work by the way.). I may not need to color my artwork but I prefer to do so for the sake of learning. And speaking of learning I have a friend whose helping me as well because I hate online tutorials with a passion. And another thing, as of right now, basic shapes look a hell of a lot worse (as shown in my previous drawing of me).
Sorry if I seem overly critical &/or sensitive about my work, that's just who I am. Looking forward to speaking with you later.
3: Please, please, please stay far away from the paint bucket tool! The reason I sent the above tutorial is because having the lineart on it's own layer allows the colors the be put in underneath it. A mouse works a lot better than a paint bucket.
4: I wasn't telling you to watch the neck length as that's been stated above. I was talking about the way the shoulders come up.
5: Right right. I haven't read that story so I wouldn't have known.
I see your point. And even though you hate online tutorials with a passion, look up some coloring ones. There are a lot of really helpful ones made by some very talented people. Of course, having someone help you is good too. Basic shapes take some getting used too, but trust me, they are absolutely essential when it comes to drawing anything. Especially humanoid characters.
Anyway, that's fine. A lot of people are critical about their own work. Myself included. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to help.
glad you didnt simulate seph's sword ^^;
still dont see how someone can wield such a long blade
