Chapter Six

By Roofles

Night had fallen as the group reached the Imperial Palace.

The palace sat on a high rise overlooking the city below. White stone columns lined the outer rise with overlooks jutting outwards. Towers rose on all four points, keeping watch even in the middle of the night. Stone buildings as tall as the temple Simeon had seen in Hali were spread out with a central courtyard in the middle. A massive fountain had been constructed in the middle showcasing several different races joined together to hold up the vase of water pouring out.

Flying up the countless white stone steps leading to the palace front gates, the group landed in the central square soon confronted by several guards. Words were quickly exchanged as Kamir explained not only who he was but also that he needed to speak to the “Imperial Majesty” above all else. Two guards split off to go inform the Emperor to their arrival as the others led them deeper into the courtyard.

Several white stone houses rose high above them from all sides in between the four outer structures Simeon was sure were some sort of shrine or temple to the Gods. The palace had been built on a large hillside overlooking the city below; here now, Simeon felt as if they were in the heavens instead of on the earth below. Several gardens had been built around the four corners of the square bringing some much needed life and color in the otherwise marble courtyard. Benches lined the walk ways with large braziers between them to light up the path of stone.

The court was barren of life other than them. In the middle of the night, other than the guards stationed around, there wasn’t anyone else out allowing the group to relatively slip in unnoticed and unmolested. That was something in itself to say a prayer of thanks for.

Kamir said he’d explain things when they got a chance, the group being rushed through the central garden, passed the fountain and towards one of the large side buildings.

“You’ll be staying here.” Kamir told Simeon as Ryder broke off from the others, Ajax tagging along until he was stopped by two guards at the door.

Simeon just looked back at the hyena watching him go. They escorted Ajax back to the barracks Ryder had headed off too, the hyena glancing back several times at Simeon and Kamir.

“You said I’m not a prisoner…” Simeon noted under his breath so the guards didn’t hear.

“These are trying times. This is for your safety, I promise.” Kamir apologized bowing his head. “Once we meet father, I’m sure the armed escort can be negotiated.” The lion didn’t sound confident and Simeon could only hope that would be the case as he was led upstairs to a large empty room.

Other than the elongated bed looking like an elongated chair, several cushions and a small ornate table there was nothing else in the massive room. Leaving vast open spaces around them. Simeon whole college could’ve fit inside the room and here he was forced to stay, alone.

“You’ll be staying here.” Kamir gestured to the bright red chaise lounge that would be serving as his bed. “If you need anything.” He gestured to the two guards standing by. “There is wine ready and one of the servants will bring you food for the night…” The lion tried to keep the smile on his face but it faltered by the end and Kamir couldn’t meet Simeon eyes.

The two stood in an awkward silence that settled abound them as heavy as the night itself had. It wouldn’t be his place to ask Kamir to stay, even if he desperately wanted his friend too. Kamir had business to attend too and here Simeon would be alone.

The lion shifted his weight, rubbing a hand on his other arm.

“I’m sorry for this. It will get better, please just manage this one night.” Kamir still didn’t meet his eyes.

“Does your father want something from me?” Simeon finally asked as he turned on the lion. Kamir didn’t meet those eyes pleading for an answer.

“I am… not sure.” Kamir let his breath out, shaking his head. That chestnut color mane shook with the motion. “I promise I’ll keep you safe, Simeon.” The lion finally smiled placing a hand on Simeon’s arm and giving it a reassuring squeeze. “Trust me, please. I will let you know once I find out myself.” Those warm honey eyes finally looked into the smaller male.

The two stood there just looking into each other’s eyes, saying words without ever opening their mouth. Kamir trying to reassure the human as Simeon pleaded for something, anything for the lion to give him in return.

“I really would like one night here without fearing for my life.” Simeon chuckled finally as he looked away. It was a weak sound that betrayed his worries. He shivered despite the cold. He seemed far smaller than he was and the lion wasn’t sure what to do then.

“I know…” Kamir rubbed his arm once more, looking down at the human. “I will be nearby. If you need me…” The lion bit his lip, holding back anything else he could say. There nothing he could do. He was still just a lesser member of his family. His word held little sway and he needed to garner favor as it was to even have a chance to make his name known.

Still, Kamir wanted to do something to help Simeon. Even if it meant risking his very future for.  He just wasn’t sure what to do. Or what to say. Some prince he’d make; the thought stung Kamir hard and his eyes watered.

Maybe… he wasn’t cut out to be Emperor if he couldn’t even help a single friend.

Simeon wasn’t sure what else to say, so he just caved in and hugged the lion. Letting the briefest of weakness show in front of him. Giving Kamir a full body squeeze as he tried to push all his worries and concerns away. The feline stood a bit taller, his tail sticking out from the sudden gesture. Kamir returned the hug after a moment, caught off guard by it.

At least this was something he could do for Simeon.

“I will be here for you tomorrow... You aren’t going to be doing this alone.” Kamir sighed heavily, resting his chin on the smaller male’s head. It felt nice, to hold someone like this. The two taking a moment to savor each other’s company in the middle of the night.

Simeon was so small in the lion’s arms. Kamir wanted to scoop him up and crush the smaller male against his chest. He smelled nice. The feel of him was comforting and it eased the worries growing in Kamir’s heart. Settled the storm of thoughts running through his mind.

This hug seemed to help Kamir far more than it helped Simeon as Kamir let go.

“What about Ajax?” Simeon finally let go in turn, taking a half-step back so he could look up into that face once more. Those warm honey eyes seemed to glow in the moonlight.

Kamir’s tail flicked but he didn’t show any other sign of annoyance. “Ajax will be in the guard house. Ryder as well. They’ll be joining us tomorrow.” He nodded at that. “Get some sleep Simeon. We’re going to need it.”

Kamir left only after Simeon had gotten comfortable, the lion even bringing over a sheet for him to use as a blanket. The warm night air was enough and Simeon lay there, staring at nothing in particular as his thoughts washed over him from everything that happened in these two days.

Kamir lingered in the doorway, looking back one last final time at the human and hoped he’d be able to see him tomorrow. He had something to do tonight and quickly headed out, focusing on the task at hand and what he needed to report. It was a good distraction from the aching need to hug that human one more time.

Simeon was lost in his own thoughts.  His worries and doubts quickly filling his mind. Coming here had been a mistake, he wanted to say. That he should’ve focused instead on finding a way home. This was just a setback that made him vulnerable, relying on others like this. Still, despite the concerns a part of him told the lost human that this was the right path to take. That he needed to be here.

He didn’t like that. Didn’t like fate dictating his life so easily. Simeon didn’t want to believe in such a thing. Coming here had begun to shake up what little faith he had making him question everything. Making his mind begin to wander. Wander back to the very home he had run away from and daring to think what his family was going through…

Sleep took him unwillingly. The exhaustion of the day catching up and before Simeon knew it, the suns had risen.

Sitting up on the cushioned bed, Simeon blocked the light with one arm looking around. Vast shadows were cast around him, slivers of sunlight poking between the numerous pillars that served as makeshift walls. The weather was warm, even in early morning. A gentle breeze blew and with it, the fresh smells of food met his nose even before the servant came into the room with the platter.

Simeon watched them closely, grabbing hold of the shawl still around his neck.

The feline looked more like a house cat than one of the lions Simeon was slowly becoming accustomed too. The monotone coloration made it hard to tell what the tan feline was thinking as he set the platter down on the small table nearby. Giving a single bow, the feline left.

Around his neck was a golden collar made of some sort of metal with a large clasp on the front of it. Simeon shivered at the implication, afraid to ask as the mute house cat left him as quickly as he had come.

“Was he…” Simeon trailed off afraid to let that thought go anywhere as he turned towards the food.

The platter had several freshly sliced pieces of bread, some soft cheese and a bundle of grapes. There was a glass of some sort of water with a hint of something sweet to it. The fragrance made his mouth water.

Absentmindedly, Simeon reached to his side. Then the other side. It was only then he realized he didn’t have his phone with him. A device he had grown so attached too that in its absence, he felt lost, disconnected. Literally.

He wanted to check his messages. His email. To tell his sister good morning. To text his friends to see if they were up to anything today. See what was on the news, to know what was going on with the world. To see if work had called or if he’d gotten a reply from the date he had last week. The memes, tweeter, checking his status, see if anyone had replied or commented on his cat post…

Anything…

Then there was that part of him that had wanted to text the others. Even here, in this place. To see what Ajax was up too. How Kamir had slept. To see if Ryder would even respond if he had messaged him. Able to be connected, when not even together. Able to talk to them, to know they were thinking of him as he was of them.

Simeon ignored the food, not feeling hungry in that moment as he got up. The loneliness was setting in and with it a cold that crawled up his arms and legs like the legs of spiders. Even hugging himself didn’t help. He could see his breath in he early morning light.

It was strange that the two guards weren’t around. Once more, it left him alone here in this strange alien world.

The sunlight around him seemed to wane as those fingers curled around his throat and Simeon could see his breath come in shaky gasps.

“This isn’t my home.” Simeon said aloud. His voice sounded distant as if someone else had said it.

“It isn’t.” He could feel something press against his back.

“I’m all alone…” He didn’t want to cry.

“You’re all alone.” Arms wrapped around him.

“I don’t belong here.” Simeon admitted.

“You don’t belong here.” It agreed as the coiling cold embraced him like a jilted lover’s touch. Running over his naked body with fingers, gripping at his chest and sides, his arms and legs with one too many hands.

And he could feel the world around him beginning to sink away. Water ran up over his ankles as his breath escaped him.

“I can’t breathe.” He thought as the world began to slip away. A hand clasped over his face and he felt those fingers entwine. Closing. Sealing shut around his throat.

Like a collar…

“Simeon?” A voice broke everything, the world shattering around him as the human fell forward, coughing and gasping as sea water dripped off his face like sweat.

Heavy hoof steps came over and Simeon felt someone touch him. He flinched away, pulling back before looking up into the gray muzzled, long faced horse he had met the other day.

“Are you… alright?” Anton asked looking around them. Grabbing the glass of water, the horse once more crouched down beside him offering it to Simeon.

The human took it with shaking fingers.

“Sorry.” Simeon found himself saying. “Must’ve been a bad nightmare…” He whispered the words, not believe them himself.

Simeon noted the shawl had fallen off. Somehow unraveling around his neck leaving him bare, naked in the morning sunlight. He looked at the horse. Anton hadn’t seen him like this before, without the guise the shawl had given him.

Kamir must’ve informed him as Anton seemed perplexed but not fully confused. More curious than anything else. The horse politely didn’t stare however like the others had. Still, his eyes glanced down at the human every now and then fill with curiosity.

“After yesterday…” Anton just nodded though. “I couldn’t sleep either.” The horse batted an ear, looking around them. He exhaled heavily before helping Simeon back over to the cushioned bed. “You should eat. Even if you aren’t hungry, you need energy after yesterday… Is the food to your taste?” The horse asked, clearly unsure if whatever Simeon was could even eat said food.

“No, no. It’s good. I just… was lost in thought.” Simeon just nodded, letting Anton lead him over and sit him down. The horse crouched down once more, pulling the platter over. “Why are you here?” Simeon asked far more accusingly than he meant too. He quickly looked away after, wishing he had apologized but didn’t. “Where is Kamir?”

“I came to get you.” Anton shrugged a shoulder, not seeming to notice or pay much attention to how Simeon had asked the question. “Well, ordered to come and get you.” The horse showed his teeth as he chuckled lightly. “I offered, knowing you. I thought… it would be easier, for you...”

Anton was the one seeming to have troubles with this. The winged Pegasus flicked his tail to one side then the other, his wings opening and closing several times.

“After yesterday.” Simeon finished for him, running a hand over his face. He was sweaty, greasy and needed a good shower. “Take me where?” He asked after accepting the bread Anton had spread the soft cheese over.

It was soft, warm and the cheese had a hint of something too it. Almost spicy. It wasn’t bad, reminding Simeon of the pepper jelly his mother used to buy back home. The bread had an almost alcoholic tinge to it making Simeon’s nose wrinkle. Everyone here seemed to love their wine it seemed.

“His Imperial Majesty, the Emperor, Pernadis the Great.” Anton bowed his head as if acknowledging the emperor on the spot. “Has requested your presence in the great hall…” Anton fumbled a bit. “And by request I mean…”

“Dictated that I show up. Yeah, I got it.” Simeon forced himself to finish what he could of the food before standing up with a stretch, only then seeming to realize he was butt naked. The night had been warm and the leather had been chaffing his skin as it was.

Covering himself with the linen blanket, Simeon quickly took two steps away from the horse. Anton got up as he did, not seeming to mind or even notice thankfully. Though the horse was defiantly not looking at him. Anton’s ears were back and his nostrils were flared once more.

The two stood there for a moment.

“I need to freshen up, before I meet his highness.” Simeon mumbled a bit hoping his embarrassment didn’t show on his face and knowing full well it did.

“Yes. I think that would be wise.” Anton agreed, still not looking at him. The horse’s nostrils flared as he snorted, his large tail swishing to the side. “If… if you follow me, I will take you to the bathes to clean up.” He gestured to the side.

“Thank you.” Simeon managed to sputter out before following.

Anton was in far more comfortable, casual wear than the suited armor he had worn the other day. The loose tunic barely went down over his groin, hiding little from view. If Simeon wasn’t self conscious before about his size, he was in front of the horse who walked in front of him.

Instead of heading into the central hallway Simeon had entered from, the two split off towards a side door he hadn’t even seen. The large spacious room had little in it, other than the glamorous portraits, curtains and vases lining the walls. Like the decorator had stopped at the walls, leaving very little in the room itself.

Several of the portraits were of a kingly lion striking a pose or holding up a sword as he stood over his fallen enemies. In fact, as Simeon walked by, each and every one of them were of this same man. He looked somewhat like Kamir but, if possible, larger.

The side room opened into a large bath resembling the one Simeon had first seen on his arrival. Four large columns were positioned around a central dip in the floor, filled with steaming hot water. One wall was lined with several private wash rooms and the other had fresh linens to clean oneself up with after.

Anton stood to the side, standing tall with his head raised high not looking at the human that had followed him in.

“You don’t need to stick around.” Simeon chuckled nervously as he walked forward. No one else was here. Other than the two of them. He wasn’t sure if that was a good or bad thing. The last time he ended up in a bathroom alone with someone he had chucked a clay vase at their head.

“It is my sworn duty to accompany you until you reach the great hall.” The horse placed both hands behind his back, standing tall as a statue and just as unmoveable. Simeon didn’t push the issue as he walked towards the central pool. “Simeon.”

That made him stop.

“You… usually rinse, before you enter the bath.” The horse ears flicked, Anton still looking towards the raised ceiling.

“Oh, right. Sorry. Not used to these public baths yet.” Simeon said looking around before finding a wooden pale. Kicking it over to a spout, he dipped the wooden faucet down and sure enough fresh warm mineral water began to pump out of it. Much as it had done back in Dragon’s Rise.

“I see.” Anton just muttered back. After dumping the water over himself, the horse went on watching the human from the corner of his eye. “Where do you… hail from?”

Simeon washed himself the best he could before moving into the central bath. The water was refreshing. It scrubbed over his skin just by walking into it as if someone had mixed a couple pounds of sand into it. The human chuckled, recalling what Ajax had said. It would be wise not to drink this water.

“From far, far away.” Simeon replied as he washed himself off. Cupping the water in one hand and rubbing it over with the next.

“Oh.” Anton took another moment. “Where?” He ended up asking, his curiosity getting the best of him. Simeon didn’t mind too much, figuring this would be a daily occurrence until the others got used to his appearance.

He had left the shawl folded neatly underneath the bed he had slept on. Knowing he’d need it later. The horse didn’t even seem to be able to see the starry blue cloth. It was so striking anyone would take note of it the first time they saw it. Simeon seemed to be the only one able to see it.

Simeon looked over one shoulder and the horse quickly looked away, having been staring. Yeah, this was going to take some time to get use too. Maybe he should’ve worn the shawl after all. Simeon always figured he was a rather average looking guy. Maybe above average? Nothing to get someone to look twice at; not in a good way or a bad way.

Here however?

Simeon was the only furless creature he’d seen so far, not counting those snakes. They had scales though and he figured that didn’t count. Other than the sparse amount of hair he had, he probably looked like some sort of alien to them. As they looked like ones to him. At least with the various races he’d encountered, he wasn’t too odd or strange.

Worried they end up wanting to dissect him otherwise.

“It’s a strange foreign land unlike any of this.” Simeon lifted a hand out of the water. It ran between his fingers back in the pool he was wading through, looping around and back to the horse. Brushing his hair back with a hand he looked at Anton.

Who had once more just been staring.

“Right.” Simeon chuckled, blushing a bit. “Towel?”

Anton quickly moved over to give him one so Simeon could cover up, then another to dry off with.

“Thank you. You really don’t have to do this.”

“I sort of do, actually.” Anton chuckled. “It is my job to take care of you. You are his Majesty guest after all. And I am one of his men.”

“Right…” Simeon took a moment to dry off his hair, letting the thick wool towel drape over his shoulders. He rubbed it against his cheek looking up at the horse. “What about the guy with the collar? The gold metal one…”

Anton took a moment on that. “Oh. OH!” The horse eyes widened and his ears splayed out as he looked away. “You aren’t from here so you don’t know about that.” The gray horse snorted, shaking his head. It made the mane he had tied up in small buns sway side to side. “They aren’t slaves, if that’s what you were thinking.”

“I totally wasn’t thinking that…” Simeon lied as he finished drying off. Anton brought over a fresh clean, bright blue robe with gold lining, sandals and several pieces of jewelry over for Simeon to put on.

“There are prisoners of war. Those who are repenting for their crimes. Political envoys and... Those given to his Majesty during such events…” Anton said vaguely, never going into any kind of specifics.

“You guys give people as gifts?” Simeon voice choked a bit as he asked. Anton quickly shook his head.

“No, no. Not like that…” The horse didn’t continue or try to explain further. Something about it made even Anton very unsettled. Simeon didn’t pry, figuring this world truly was different from his own. He needed to be careful or he might end up as someone’s pet… “They are willing.” Anton finally added as the two headed back into the main room.

Simeon quickly collected the scarf that had slipped off during the night. He wrapped it around his wrist instead of his neck, glancing back at the horse he could tell it didn’t have the same affect it had before. He could only imagine what thoughts were going through Anton’s head after seeing him like this.

“Willing servants?” Simeon didn’t like the sound of that very much. It was just a nice way of sugar coating things.

“To pay off their crimes.” Anton nodded as if that somehow made everything better. Simeon didn’t push the issue further as the horse stood by the entrance he had previously come through. “I will lead you to the great hall, when you are ready.”

Simeon fiddled with the gold bracelets around his wrists and the pendant over one shoulder. They were real. Simeon never owned something so… expensive before. It didn’t seem right. A trinket, something to stroke ones ego instead of something of any real use. They were heavy, burdensome and something Simeon wished he could just take off.

“Yeah. Ready as I’ll ever be.” Simeon looked down at himself feeling like trophy to be shown off. Even the sandals he wore had been decorated and polished to a fault.

Following behind Anton, the two headed off down the central hallway. It was just as spacious as the room they had come from. The far wall was just columns, opening up into the courtyard they had landed in that very morning. And just like the previous night, the halls were devoid of life save for the occasional guard.

They saluted as the two walked by making Simeon far more conscious about what he was wearing, how he looked and the fact they seemed to be staring directly at him.

It took them several minutes, cutting through the courtyard at the end, to reach the stairs leading up to the “actual palace.” Anton chuckled as he explained.

“What? Not going to give me a lift again?” Simeon asked as he walked up the first two steps and looked back at him. The horse hadn’t followed.

“I can’t walk the path of the gods…” Anton bowed his head at him. “I will see you inside.” His wings spread. “Just keep going up the steps and you will reach the great hall.” And with that Anton left him, leaving Simeon alone.

The human watched the horse fly through the sky like a bird. A bird galloping that is. It was a strange sight from this angle. An angle that gave him a clear view up the kilt Anton had been wearing. Simeon stared long than he really needed too… Before being left alone.

Alone with his thoughts.

A part of him wanted to turn right back around and just run for it as he had done originally. Another part of him reasoned out maybe this was for the best. That maybe this lion dude could help him get home. Still other parts of him made the doubt inside grow with every step he took up the marble stairway.

He felt like an ant crawling up a hill as he walked up those steps. They were wider than he was used too, having to take one and a half steps before stepping up to the next. Lifting his foot high before able to reach the next step. Whoever had built these steps and built them with someone far larger than Simeon was in mind.

Simeon did not want to meet that kind of person.

“This has to be some sort of sick form of punishment.” Simeon grumbled as he reach the quarter mark. The path eased over flat land. Several trees and shrubs had been planted creating a miniature garden. Not a soul was here. “I’m not trespassing am I?” Simeon didn’t want to go through that on top of all this.

Arrested in a strange world like this. What even would be the punishment? The thought made him shiver.

“They did tell you to climb the stairs.” A voice made him jump as a fox seemed to materialize behind him. Dollos walked past him over to one of the trees, glancing back. The red fox as smug looking as ever. “I figured you could use some company.” The fox smirked seeing the glare he got from the human.

“Thanks.” Simeon rolled his eyes as he walked over.

“Unless they were lying.” Dollos went on grabbing an apple and biting into it. He tossed it carelessly behind him on the ground. Simeon rolled his eyes, walking over to pick it up.

“Maybe you’re the one lying?” Simeon offered, tossing the apple back over by the tree. At least there it would turn to mulch. Dollos watched him closely, the corner of his lip pulling up to show a hint of white fangs underneath.

“True. I could be. You could be too.” The fox spun around on one foot continuing to head up the steps. Simeon walked along with him.

“What could I possibly gain from lying?” Simeon dared to ask, at least he wasn’t alone. He wasn’t sure if this was any better though. If Dole hadn’t shown up however, Simeon was sure his nerves would’ve gotten the best of him and he’d have taken off in the opposite direction.

Not that he’d admit that however.

“You can gain a LOT of things from lying, dear Simeon.” Dollos gave him a knowing smile at that. “That’s why I like you.”

“Thanks?” The human just shrugged unsure if that was an insult or not.

“You seem to understand the usefulness of a lie. Whereas these upstuck pricks don’t.” The fox bit into another apple, tossing it to the side of them. Simeon wasn’t even sure where he had gotten that one, having been watching the fox the whole time. He didn’t pick up the second apple, not about to play into whatever game the red fox was playing at.

“I understand very little actually.” Simeon frowned as he continued to climb the steps.

“Exactly!” Dollos laughed happily, his bushy tail swaying back and forth behind him. The fox took the steps far easier than Simeon did as if he weighed very little. Bouncing up the steps with almost playful skips before waiting for the human to join him.

“I understand little and so that’s a good thing?”

“A good thing you lie.” Dollos corrected “If you don’t know something. If you’re in an unfamiliar place? If those around you aren’t like you’re used to…” The fox glanced over at him with cat like eyes. “It would be best to lie.” He glanced down at the scarf around Simeon arm. “To hide. To keep them at a distance.”

Simeon rolled his eyes at that. “I can’t lie about everything!”

“Why not?” Dollos chuckled, his triangular ears perking up with the smile that spread from ear to ear. “Isn’t it fun to lie! To trick them. To get away with it?” He spun around still managing to keep step with the human.

“Yeah. What about like trust, though?” Simeon sighed as if he were talking to a rather noisy child.

“Eh, not my department.” The fox shrugged.

“Your department?” Simeon gave the fox a good look. Dollos just gave him a wink before running ahead.

“Going to leave you behind.”

“You’re lying.” Simeon chuckled as he stopped. The fox did as well.

“You caught me.” The fox walked back down and only then did Simeon continue up the steps. “How did you tell?”

Simeon took a moment at that, glancing down behind them. They were only half way up and his legs were already feeling it. “Why did Anton have to leave but it’s ok for you to be here? Why is it ok for me to be here?” Simeon asked looking down at the marble steps then at the fox.

Dole just shrugged. “Who knows!” The fox laughed as the two continued to the top. “Are you enjoying my gift?”

“It’s… unique.” Simeon admitted looking down at the shawl. “How does it do what it does?”

“Misdirection mostly.” Dole tapped a finger to his chin a couple of times. “I think.” The fox shrugged the thought away. “It’s not mine.”

“Where did you get it then?” Simeon asked and Dole never answered.

It took another half hour just for the two to reach the top. Simeon having to take a break near the end to catch his breath.

“My legs feel like jelly.” He breathed heavily, bending over and wishing someone had built an escalator for him to take instead.

“Going down will be a lot easier.” Dole just noted not even winded as the fox rocked back on his toes. “Well. If they even let you leave.”

“Funny.”

The fox just smiled as he looked back towards the entrance of the building they were standing in front of.

The building was tall. The stone structure rising high above everything else around them. Unlike the buildings below, it had four square walls with pillars leading up to the entrance. Simeon could only see one way in. Massive doors had been hand craved and decorated. They stood twenty feet high and Simeon wasn’t sure how he’d get in.

Only to have one such door open at their approach, just enough for Simeon to slip inside.

“Don’t forget to lie.” The fox voice drifted away at his side.

“I guess this is where we part ways?” Simeon asked looking over. The fox was already gone. Only a wisp of air blew by as he looked over. Simeon sighed at that. “Of course…” He had hoped he didn’t have to go in alone and here he was just about to do that.

“Lie?” Simeon played around with the word before shaking his head. No. He wouldn’t just listen to some random guy he met. He had a choice in this no matter what fate wanted to dictate over his life.

Two massive bronze statues stood at each side of the door. Their empty eye sockets seeming to watch him as Simeon walked past.

“Hey fella’s, good job.” He pointed at one of them feeling even more uncomfortable as he walked through the small opening between the doors. The two doors shut behind him making the hair on his arms stand on end.

A large open hallway stood before him. A maroon carpet had been rolled out with golden lace along its edges. The walls had similar color banners with the same gold lining to them. Vases, statues and portraits of several past rulers lined the hall Simeon walked down.

Still he didn’t see anyone, making the alarm bell blare in his head. He was sure this was a trap as he walked up another small set of stairs and to an open archway. He could hear people on the other end and at this point he would just be thankful to see anyone.

The noise died down and Simeon found himself standing before more than a hundred people. Everyone stopping, turning and staring at him as he took his first step forward. He changed his mind; he rather spend the rest of his days alone than this.

Breaths caught in people throats, gasps sounded nearby, muttering picked up as the noise only grew the further he walked into the room. To each side were thongs of divided people. Groups of different nations, he assumed, gathered together waiting for his arrival.

Large lizards as tall as the lion taurs he’d seen earlier looked down at him. Flicking out their tongues as the human walked past, trying to give them a friendly smile. They didn’t return it. They didn’t have scales so much as fur, fur that was brightly colored. Varying from the deepest of blues to fiery reds. One even was the color of sunset, the orange lizard the smallest of the group dressed in a bland brown tunic like the others with bright orange fur that changed color as it ran over his arms and legs.

Next to them were several dog like creatures standing tall and proud, if only half the size as the lizards. Their short black fur made them look like some sort of racing dog, like a greyhound. Simeon knew they were probably jackals of some sort, still unable to get the idea of a derpy greyhound out of his mind however just waiting for one to stick out its tongue from the side of its muzzle. They were dressed in full armor unlike the lizards; bright gold and bronze shone, sparkling in the torchlight.

Those across from them were some sort of bird race. Feathered faces puffed up as he walked by. What looked like an owl twisted its neck around to talk to its companion in a hushed voice. Several bundles and rolls of scrolls lay around them, tucked under wing and were stored in leather satchels at their side. Unlike the war like canine race, these scholars seemed far more interested in knowledge than bloodshed. Still, those beaks looked like they could easily peck out an eye and after running into the Sky Terror, Simeon didn’t want to risk it.

Numerous others stood before him as he continued walking down, trying to keep his head up and faltering to do so by the end. Bulls the size of trucks, deer’s with antlers covered in moss and flowers; felines and dogs and bovines, cervines and more.

Simeon was glad to see one of the closet groups to the end were lions, something he was far more familiar with. In fact the four closet groups were lions. Two looked like arm guards and the others in far more formal wear matching what Simeon was wearing although maroon instead of blue.

Simeon gave a weak smile at Kamir, spying him in the back. The lion returned it before looking up towards the end of the room with the others.

Raised above everyone else sat a lion that had to be twice Kamir’s size. The massive beast had one leg crossed over the other, resting his bulking head on a raised arm as he looked down at Simeon with a bored curiosity only a feline could managed. His chestnut mane was far deeper, brighter and somehow thicker than even Kamir’s. The edges of which seemed to glow in the afternoon sun streaming down behind him from the circular open windows that matched the suns outside. Those eyes burned like fire and he was the most lavish looking man Simeon had ever seen in his life.

Rings adorned everyone of his fingers. Golden bracelets studded with gems ran up one arm, the other had a bejeweled bracer. The robes he wore were long and flowing, hand stitched with golden thread. Tufts of golden lace sat on one shoulder, running down to show off several medals pinned over his entire chest. Even his tail had a ring on it, the loop band threatening to slide off with the slow movements of it; only at the last second did the Emperor catch it with the tuft at the end, letting it slide back down before repeating the process.

Simeon wasn’t sure if he should bow or what and just sort of stood there unable to meet those eyes. They looked like twin suns burning in the nest of chestnut fur that circled his head like a halo.

“You have finally arrived!” A voice boomed out in front of him making everyone in the room stand up. It was like the emperor was speaking through a megaphone. “Greetings!” And the massive lion stood up, opening his arms in a warm gesture as he smiled down at the human as if Simeon had just been served up to him on a silver platter. “The Witness has arrived.”

Several murmurs rose up amongst the others making Simeon wish he could ask Kamir what the actual fuck was going on.

With a slight motion of his hands the rabble died down, the lion clapping both hands together as he stared down at the human ignoring all others. The clap sounded like thunder, booming through the room and seeming to shake the very air around them.

“I hope your travels have been well in my land.” The Emperor spoke and his voice was the rumble before the storm.

Simeon didn’t answer him, not about to tell him the hell he’d been through just to get here. Or what kind of shit hole of a country he had with monsters running around, trash in the street among everything else.

“We welcome you with warm, open arms. Eyes of the Gods.” The Emperor rolled the word around on his tongue as if savoring it. Glancing up he seemed to be staring at something Simeon couldn’t see. “Oh, how long it’s been since the Gods have graced me… graced us with their presence!” The lion chuckled smiling back down at the human. “Come, come. Don’t just stand there with the others.” The Emperor motioned for Simeon to join him. “Up here, up here. You don’t belong with the rabble!” And the Emperor laughed. A harsh, booming sound that made his belly shake.

Simeon didn’t even get a chance to agree or disagree as two large four legged lions came up from behind him. The guards motioned for him to head up and Simeon quickly obeyed not wanting to get skewered on one of the hoplites they held. Those spears were taller than Simeon was.

“Here, here. Take a seat, take a seat. Look out over them.” Emperor Pernadis gestured at a much smaller, less lavish chair than his own at his right. Simeon was practically forced into it by the guards. The emperor only smiled at that with half laden eyes, maybe savoring the fact that even Simeon was seated below him.

“Thank you, your… majesty.” Simeon managed to say.

The Emperor laughed a booming sound that shook off the walls themselves. “Please. We are but equals, you and I.” The Emperor seemed to take great pride in this as he rested one large hand on Simeon’s shoulder. It made him sag slightly to the side from the weight. “Emperor Pernadis, is fine.” Pernadis didn’t even let Simeon reply as the he was back up onto his feet.

Clapping his hands together the room grew quiet once more. Each clap sounded like thunder. “Please, please. We have our guest here! Do be polite…” And with those words a rumble grew in his chest making even Simeon pull away from the great lion. “Bring the food! Bring the Wine! It is a celebration after all.” Emperor Pernadis chuckled the next second, his facing easing up.

And with that every side door flung open as if just waiting for the word. Servants of all shapes and sizes came out holding trays of finger foods or goblets of wine. And each and every one of them wore a collar around their neck like Simeon had seen that morning.

They passed by all the others, each and every servants coming up and before the Emperor and his guest to offer what they had to them before going to the others. None of them said a word. Their heads were bowed and all they did was offer up the tray.

Emperor Pernadis picked at what he liked. Tossing what he didn’t back at them. Maybe it landed on the tray, maybe it landed on their face he didn’t even seem to notice. The finicky feline seeming uncertain with each and every one of his decisions he made. Simeon was forced to go along with it.

The Emperor picked and chose what Simeon had gotten. Changing his mind halfway through and tossing the plate aside. Another was given to Simeon just as quickly and once more the great lion told him what he “preferred and liked.” What was “good this time of year.” And what was the best “Wine to savor with.”

The Emperor didn’t even seem to care that Simeon didn’t take a single bite or drink as the others around them began to gather. Continue to brag about his knowledge of the finest drinks for each and every dish.

Soon enough, the others began moving. The Emperor just lounged back in his chair, that bored looking passing over his face as the spot light was taken away from them. With a flick of his wrist the sunlight seemed to move from the two of them and land on the spot before them; acting like a natural spotlight for the others to use.

Each group, one by one, took their turns to step forward. Bowing and showing respect to Emperor Pernadis before speaking to Simeon.

“I am Pyra.” The fiery red lizard bowed his head. Though lizard like, there was something off to it Simeon couldn’t put his finger on. They resembled komodo dragons from back home. Instead of scales however they were covered in a thick short fur that looked almost like a rug. Their fur shifted and changed in the light as if the color underneath was moving. “Dragon of the isle.”

Simeon took a moment on that.

“Dragon?” He wanted to ask but held back returning the half bow he got in turn. The large blue lizard next to Pyra had fins for ears; the end of his equally long broad tail also had blue fins. Even his fingers and toes were webbed making Simeon eyes widen.

A dragon…

The next group was already moving up before Simeon could respond. The lion like creatures had the upper body of birds and the lower body of felines.

“I am Kore, of the winged griffons.” The man bowed his whole upper body. His feathers were as well groomed as the tuft of fur on the end of his lion tail. Just as quickly, he moved aside for the next to introduce themselves.

“I am Sirius, of the desert.” The older of the two jackal brothers introduced himself, likewise giving a deep bow. “It is my honor to meet you, to know you, to serve you oh eyes of the gods.” The jackal removed his helmet, shaking his hair to one side before bowing even deeper than he had before.

Sirius like his brother had gold paint decorating his face. Giving the almost obsidian skin much needed highlights to help Simeon know where his eyebrows were supposed to be. The filigree of gold paint ran over his entire body, down underneath the loose skirt armor he wore and over his fingers and toes.

“I live only to serve the gods.” Sirius glanced up at him and Simeon managed to return the smile making the tip of the jackal’s tail twitch in a wag. He was ushered aside as familiar faces stepped forward.

Ajax had been pushed back behind his sisters. The hyena in front pounded her chest several times, the braided bone vest rattled with the motion.

“Toma!” She barked at Simeon. “Lead wardog of the wardogs.” She pounded her chest once more, lifting her head high as if challenging anyone foolish enough to question otherwise. Simeon mostly ignored her though put on a friendly face, glancing back at Ajax who tried to return the smile. It didn’t meet the hyenas eyes as it normally did as he was pushed into the back and aside as the next group stepped forward.

From Brom of the plains, a massive bull holding an equally massive warhammer. To Finn, an elegant crane that just bowed his head once and left. To Dros, a deer with antlers of bark and strands of vines draping down over his face. The day only dragged on as Simeon was forced to endure each and every introduction soon learning the person who introduced themselves was the chosen member of their group. The patron that would be participating in The Games to honor their god in their name.

Simeon politely put up with it. Only needing to reply with a yes or no every now and then, lying each time he opened his mouth. It didn’t seem right but he knew it to be the wise choice right now. As Dollos had pointed out to him, sometimes the safest thing to do was to lie.

“The heavens.” Simeon just said when asked where he had from. It wasn’t much of a lie. For all he knew that was how he had gotten here.

“Me? Well, as you can see. I’m rather… bland. So that I don’t represent any one group or favor one over the other. A blank slate, to be impartial in my judgment.” Simeon answered another question when asked what he was exactly.

“Uh… cheese over butter.” Simeon answered each question he could without telling them anything of value.

The day ticked by and the boredom had long since set in after the overall shock of the situation had passed by. Knowing he wasn’t about to be strung up by his ankles and beaten for being caught, there was little else to worry about. Simeon wasn’t no messenger or servant or eyes of the Gods. He was a guy that was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was glad, other than Dole, no one was aware of it.

It was the only reason why he was still alive. Or at least not thrown into some dark, dirty cell somewhere.

The last group came by and Simeon was greeted by Kamir once more. This time his brother and sisters didn’t tag along, Simeon learning the chosen champion of the lion-guard was the eldest brother instead of his friend. Kamir would be the one to be participating in the regional bout while his brother Achell would be the champion representing the Sun God Phoebus.

“How are you managing?” Kamir asked only after the Emperor moved throughout the room to do his mandatory meet and greet once more, to keep the guests happy. His Imperial Majesty did not seem happy about doing so, rather wanting to laze around on his throne watching everyone else.

“I am. So. Bored!” Simeon kept his voice down even though he wanted to shout. He was just glad Kamir had dropped by without the entourage of others. Simeon had to put on a fake smile for everyone else and was glad he could at least let his guard down slightly around his friend.

The lion stayed standing instead of joining him, so Simeon got up to chat with him. The two managed to exchange few pleasantries before another took notice of the exchange.

“Kamir.” A female voice came from behind her brother and Kamir stepped aside.

“Ah, Nadia.” The lion smile didn’t waver and his warm honey eyes were as kind as ever. Simeon picked up quickly she was a dear friend of Kamir, unlike the pompous ass of a brother he had met. “What brings you over?”

“Father.” Nadia rolled her eyes, brushing a strand of chestnut hair from her face. The bundle of hair began to unravel over the day and she didn’t seem to bother tying it back up. Her eyes reminded Simeon of Kamir. In fact, Nadia could’ve been his twin the two resembled each other so closely.

“I should’ve known.” Kamir chuckled lightly, keeping his voice low as he spoke. The two glanced over at the tall lion stalking around the room. The Emperor made sure he was noticed wherever he went. Parting the crowd before him like a shark through a school of minnows.

“He hates these soirées.” Nadia shook her head before seeming to notice Simeon next to her brother. “Of course that’s only because of your honored presence!” She chuckled quickly, trying to apologize without apologizing. Something Kamir had done previously.

Simeon laughed at that. “Oh, no. Please continue. This is the most fun I’ve had since I’ve arrived.” He said offering her a drink from the numerous goblets of wine that had been placed in front of him throughout the day. None of them had been touched and the one in Simeon’s hand had been nursed to death.

Nadia took a second on that, daring a glance at her brother who just nodded. Her face relaxed and shoulders slumped. The robe she wore was a lighter shade of maroon than the one Kamir had on. Numerous silver bracelets adorned her arms and several similar bands were snapped around her neck. Like a set of rings balanced together. Her graceful movements didn’t even make the metal click together as she turned back towards the two.

“At least it’s almost over.” Nadia sighed looking around at everyone gathered. “It’s been years since we had such a meeting and everyone is too busy talking about their own accomplishments…” She trailed off not daring to go further in front of Simeon. She took a long drink.

“Rather than addressing the issue in the city?” Simeon finished for her thinking about what she had meant. Nadia cat like eyes moved slowly to look at him, her face remaining as neutral as ever. “Or you mean the monster attacks? Can’t forget about the Syliss. Let alone any and everything else.” Simeon smirked at the end unable to help himself as he hit the nail on the head.

He knew he should’ve kept quiet about it all but a part of him didn’t want to deny the reality of the situation he was in. The change between the city and the palace was far more drastic than he’d have thought. The streets were clean here, the air was fresh and everyone was lavishly garnished in the finest of metals and jewels.

Back in the city it looked like have the populace was starving and the other half stricken with disease.

“Something like that, yes.” Nadia just nodded without confirming or denying what he had said. In itself that was the answer Simeon had expected. This was politics after all. Getting a yes or no from someone here would be all but impossible.

Kamir’s tail flicked. “Hopefully that will change soon…” He trailed off as his sister had, the two of them exchanging a look. Simeon caught it, unsure if he should mention it though. “Once this is over,” Kamir addressed Simeon once more. “I can show you around the palace. You will be staying here until The Games start in the city below.”

“I can’t visit before hand?” Simeon asked a bit worried he really was a prisoner. Or maybe, more like a precious bird trapped in a cage to be paraded around to any visitor that showed up. Maybe he really was going to end up being the Emperor’s pet.

“Well…” Kamir coughed into a closed fist, not meeting his eyes. “We might be able to arrange something. An armed escort at least…”

“If I recall correctly, I did just fine against the Sky Terror.” Simeon pointed out.

“With an armed escort.” Kamir chuckled though. “Please, understand. I will do my best to help but we are rather limited…” His voice died off as another two joined them. Kamir didn’t look pleased by all these uninvited guests.

“Kamir. Nadia.” Sirius the black jackal guard came over with his younger brother Rylis behind him. Sirius gave each a nod before a bow to Simeon. “I hope they are not troubling you…” His words insinuated if Simeon had asked, Sirius would take care of said trouble.

Simeon just chuckled uneasily at that noting the fact the two jackals were heavily armored and armed.

“Greetings, honored Witness.” Rylis acknowledged Simeon, ignoring the other two. “My apologies during our first encounter.” Simeon gave him a look and the jackal faltered. “I had tried to help when that hyena got in my way… in the baths…”

Kamir was the one to exchange a look with him.

“Ajax.” Simeon explained with a single word making Kamir nod as if that was enough. As if the hyena was commonly caught in the baths doing something wrong. “You were with the guard that had come to check, then?”

“Yes.” Rylis frowned though as if still beating him up for it. “That uncultured swine stopped me from assisting you…”

Sirius cleared his throat loudly before Rylis could continue. “I do hope you enjoy The Games. I will put on my best, for you.” The jackal eyes were like the golden desert sands themselves. Only highlighted further by the gold paint on his face. His muzzle curled up in a smile as he stood formal before Simeon, placing a single hand on his chest and giving a deep bow.

Three bows in one minute. Simeon had to admit, the guy was committed.

“Pull the stick out of your ass for one minute.” Nadia finally piped in, looking at him with a bored distaste. With a roll of her eyes she looked at Rylis. The two just glared at each other. Simeon could see even in the large animal kingdom cats and dogs did not get along.

“Why are you here?” Kamir finally asked looking at the jackal captain. Sirius lifted his nose a bit.

“I have been told to keep watch on The Witness while he is here. It will be my guard that keeps him safe.” The jackal didn’t even hide the prideful smile that spread over his face as he rubbed it in Kamir’s.

“Then…” Simeon took a step forward, eyes filled with excitement. “That means I can go to the city?” The jackal ears folded back, caught off guard by the sudden enthusiasm. His wanted need to rub it in the lion’s face quickly dissipating as Simeon went on. “There are so many things I want to see while I’m here.”

Kamir gave him a look.

“What? I don’t come here often.” Simeon rolled his eyes, planning to take advantage of the situation. “I might as well get a tour of the whole city and palace.” Simeon just gave the jackal a smile at that as if asking the question with it alone. “My good, guard sir. Will you do me the honor of escorting me around to show me the sights? I would love to see this world in all its wonder and splendor.” Simeon put on the fakest of fancy voices he could possibly muster.

Kamir frowned at that as the jackal stood up proudly before him.

“It would be my deepest, greatest of pleasures to show you, my master.” Sirius bowed his head, flicking his skinny tail in a wag as he smirked over at the two lions watching him.

“See. All done. Easy as that, Kamir.” Simeon just shrugged to the lion’s discontent. “You are more than welcome to join us.” The lion never got a chance to answer, forced to step aside.

The group stepped aside as the Emperor came back over. The great lion seeming far more exhausted than anyone else at the party.

“Father, should we begin wrapping things up?” Nadia asked, stepping forward with a bow before speaking. The larger lion looked down at her.

“Oh, good. There you are, you. Go get me some refreshments.” The Emperor waved her off making the lioness frown deeply, though hidden behind her bowed head. Simeon caught it from where he stood, making him equally frown along with her.

“Of course… father.” Nadia headed off to get something for him to drink.

The Emperor looked at the others with that bored curiosity that quickly faded away with his growing fatigue. He couldn’t even afford to put on that front as he just groaned a sigh, shoulders slacking noticeably.

“Majesty.” Sirius bowed and moved back, stepping to Simeon’s other side. Rylis behind his brother in tow. Emperor Pernadis ignored the two jackals, looking at the lion instead.

“You are?” The Emperor asked with a bored disinterest as if required to at least oblige Kamir with the question.

“Kamir.” His own son answered with a grimace.

“Your son.” Simeon added on. The Emperor looked at him as if forgetting all about the other lion.

“Which one?”

“You’re uh… second youngest son, Kamir.” Simeon frowned a bit now. The Emperor didn’t seem to notice. “The one who escorted me to your palace, Emperor Pernadis. He saved my life. Kept me safe until I was able to get here… He has my deepest thanks.” Simeon added, giving Kamir a smile. The lion was just staring at the ground and didn’t hear him however.

“Oh, yes. Very good.” And the lion pat his son once on the head. “Good job.” And with that walked past him without even looking back.

Kamir just looked down at the ground without a word. Simeon was about to say something when that booming voice filled the room.

“Thank you all for coming to see me.” The Emperor yawned loudly as he turned away, giving them a wave over a shoulder. “You are dismissed.” And with that he lumbered his way out one of the side doors. Ending things so abruptly no one was sure what to say on the matter.

Nadia stepped up onto the stage after he exited.

“His majesty wants you to know in Five days the games will begin, as scheduled. Now that the honored guest has arrived,” she gestured down at Simeon. He gave a weak wave at everyone. “We will begin preparations to have everything underway! Please, enjoy your stay in the palace until The Games start.” And with a bow she left, following after her father.

“Simeon.” Kamir started only to be cut off by Sirius, who moved in front of the lion.

“My master,” Sirius offered a hand to Simeon with another elegant bow. “It would be my pleasure to show you around the palace.” Simeon looked at Kamir who didn’t meet his eyes, just glaring down at the jackal. “It would be the greatest of honors to assist you.”

Simeon worried the lion was about to bite the canines head off.

“Kamir.” Simeon started but the lion turned and left without another word. “Sure.” He ended up just saying, making the jackals tail wag. “Let’s get this over with.” Simeon sighed, far less enthused by it all than before.

Sirius gladly offered an arm and Simeon begrudgingly took it. The fun in this had vanished as quickly as the Emperor had. With a sigh, the human just looked around for the others. Ajax was gone. Ryder never showed up. Kamir had left without another word.

Even by the jackals side, Simeon felt alone here.

Wondering if he’d even be able to see his friends again.
