As far as I can remember about folk lore, their tails represents age. For example like Nekomata, the demon cat, one tail represents ten years.
Forgive me if I was wrong about it.
It's been a while since I've taken a look at my research, but I could certainly double-check that.
I thought their tail represents a year or five, but 100? Definitely not the type of myth you should to meet.
