Cobra Hoodies
Title can't be empty.
Title can't be empty.
Because of Zaphira in my Prophecy comic, I started to think a bit more about the hoods for cobras, and I’d like to share a few thoughts about some hood designs I saw. I realised I can divide their hood types to a few different ones. I always thought any type of these can be a strong tool for a character’s personality, and could even represent ears or hair as well. It's important how long it reaches down to the back, its shape, its size and how it connect to the head.
I hope this little thing could be a little helpful too ^ ^

I find it funny that hoods on anthro cobras don't exactly mimic an actual cobra, at least from what I can gather. Hoods are formed when the ribs on the neck of a snake spread out, and are usually flared when a cobra is agitated or raises it's head up for balance, resuming a traditional snake's form when not in use (albeit a little thicker around the neck than other species.).
Clearly there is a visible neck in these illustrations which would make the hood seem like an extra pair of ribs, or "ears" as you described it. Not that there is any fault in how it looks, I think I prefer it more than a "realistic" interpretation. It's just something I've observed in several depictions. I think the Sethrak race from World of Warcraft got it pretty close in terms of how a cobra's neck functions (though it doesn't look like they're able to unflare it, which to be fair, might look silly on an anthro body).
I think, out of the 3 bottom ones, I like the "short" version, fits well along the neck line without morphing too much. Also, the "helmet" made me giggle. I may keep these in mind for potential future sketches. Thanks for sharing. You're art is always a pleasure to view.
