"The Swarm"
Title can't be empty.
Title can't be empty.
My brother in Greenville, SC, USA has two hummingbird feeders on his backyard patio. There aee at least two families of hummingbirds that come to feed there. They, of course, both want this one feeder and refuse to go to the other feeder about 15 feet (5 meters) away. We were counting at least eight hummingbirds between teh two groups, which collectively my brother calls "The Swarm".
Some thoughts on photographing hummingbirds.
1. Get them into the bright sunlight so that you can shoot at the fastest shutter speed your camera has or something close to it.
2. Use a fast prime if available. I should have used my f/2.0 50 mm more in retrospect. An f/1.2 or f/1.8 prime lens would have been even better.
3. Still stop down some to get depth of field.
4. I gave up on autofocus and set the focus manually on the feeder. Results were mixed. A fast prime and the most recent generation of autofocus might work okay, but be prepared to ditch it if it is not working well.
8. Use sequential shooting and shoot as fast as possible. These guys move incredibly fast.
