Actually one of my favorite novels of all time is The Physician by Noah Gordon. It tells the story of a man who travels all the way to Persia to learn to practice medicine because he was dismayed by the "doctors" in his native England.
What era does The Physician take place in? I recall in The Madness Of King George how primitive medicine was in England in the late 1700's.
