Elro-Class Cruiser
Title can't be empty.
Title can't be empty.
"The Elro-Class is an inexpensive ship, need to create a fleet but low on funds? No problem! The Elro is the perfect fit for you and your credits! Please be advised, escape pods and shields not included." - Advertisement for the Elro ship
Ship Type: Cruiser
Manufacturer: Fecklor Dynamics
Description/History: The Elro-class is a ship manufactured and designed by Fecklor Dynamics, the ship was created to profit from the various battles and wars going between multiple powers. The ship is often described as 'cheap junk' as it has no frills and is often a stopgap for less advanced forces, as the ship is sold without a lot of critical and needed systems to even make the ship close to being combat effective. The ship however is widely used by pirates, corsairs and low tier mercenaries due to it's cheap cost and it's modular design makes it inexpensive to maintain. The ship does best outside of acting as a ship for battle actually, without it's massive energy cannons, the ship can be turned into a mining ship, a colonizer, a cruise ship, merchant vessels and so on, which is why the ships are widely bought without weaponry or at most their scatter lasers and forward torpedo launchers with the addition of point-defense systems.
Due to the failure of the ship unable to fulfill the role of a cheap combat ship, they are often scrapped for raw materials, pressed into rearguard or suicide missions to get rid of existing stock. Many elro ships are also stripped down to their framework and converted to personal ships that are properly outfitted, this is once again due to how much internal space the ship overall has for displacement, but after the nearly fifty year production run this is actually becoming even rarer as newer ships have come into production that have the price point of the elro but have the proper parts needed to make the ships serve a combat role. Thus the elro no longer serves in any military(unless they have no alternatives) and is often used by pirates, though most elro ships that are still present are actually in more civilian roles.
Design: The Elro-class was designed to be a cheap alternative ship, it's armament is what drew many customers in, two triple-barrel energy cannon turrets are at the front with two scatter laser systems and eight torpedo launchers, on the rear is twin-barrel heavy laser cannon turret system. There are also two main variants, though it's such a subtle difference, if the ships bridge has five windows on each facing it's the command variant as oppose to the standard four window configuration, the command variant has slightly more powerful communications and senors, but due to the minute cost difference eventually only the command variant was being produced. Other issues include cheap engine systems and stabilizers, a power source that needs to be tuned after purchase to allow it to keep up with the energy weapons and no point defense systems by default with no combat shields to boot
With such a poor design, many wonder why these were still bought in droves. The answer is due to it's modular design and the fact that few still serve as ships in a combat sense. Many are converted into more civilian style vessels from merchant ships to mining vessels and everything in between, however just as many are scrapped to be turned into raw materials to build other ships. There was short span of time where many were converted into custom ships with their frames, but after more advanced ships became available at better cost this idea was lost. The only group who appreciate the design are pirates, corsairs and mercenary groups who don't have much spending power, however even this is dying off as other modular ships to fulfill the same role have been created. There is actually a 'mark 2' design but the only changes are that it has proper shields, properly tuned power systems, escape pod systems and point defense system, however these are not bought if there are any alternatives as it is still a shotty design.
