This paper aims at reassessing the evidence on a controversial case, i.e. the presence of epinician motifs in the parodos of Sophocles’ Ajax. By applying some principles of intertextual studies, the argumentation reconstructs the public’s competence in Pindaric texts and compares Sophocles’ text with the most relevant passages from victory songs. Far from being part of a mere literary discussion upon the adaptation of the myth of Ajax, Sophocles’ reworking of Pindar’s odes cooperates with the whole composition of the parodos and with several dramaturgic features in order to characterize the Chorus of Salaminian sailors.

El. 1245-50, a passage from the recognition duet between Electra and Orestes, has so far steered clear of the editors\u2019 criticism. However, the passage presents a number of small and yet troublesome problems: there is a lacuna; the participle λησόμενον is syntactically obscure; the meaning of the verb ἐνέβαλες is not per- spicuous; the position of the phrase οἷον ἔφυ is strange. Our paper investigates all the problems mentioned above, trying to reassess the grammatical, syntactical, and linguistic status of the passage, and to find a solution to its main difficulties.
