In many ways, it is obvious that Disney had a lot more of everything in this film than he did in Snow White. The film clearly sets out to outdo Snow White in every way possible. It's a bit more mature as a story, it is more detailed in its design, better colored and more clean in its animation. The use of the multiplane camera is simply stunning. And the special effects are extraordinary.
I think it's also important to note, that Pinocchio was a huge failure at the Box Office. And I often just can't explain it to myself. In what world, in 1940 is that movie not something amazing? It's a movie about perseverance and the values of education and knowledge. Maybe it's because I'm such a Ravenclaw but isn't that something we all should get through our heads at a young age? That knowledge is the real power, that without it we're the kind of fools who get taken advantage of? IIIIIIDK. Many people say it was because of the war breaking out, that international audiences didn't get to see the film. But it's still quite disheartening. It was the highest grossing film of the decade, regardless. So I guess there is a point to that.

Anyway, It's also interesting to note that Pinocchio received an episodic treatment that no other Disney film has, really. And this episodic treatment allows the film to touch upon many subjects while still in the main story. It's kind of a shame that Walt never thought of making more clear separations on these episodes, because perhaps they would've benefited from a different treatment each, design wise or music wise. But then again, the fact that they are so seamless makes the movie very coherent despite the very different settings and broken up story telling.

The Characters
I think the character studies in Pinocchio are far more interesting than those of the films that followed it during that decade. Pinocchio has smarter use of characterization and the characters in it serve story in a much more efficient way.
I think, in a lot of ways it's interesting because most of the characters are very creative interpretations of the characters in the original story, and much like in Snow White, it was clear for the animation team that if they wanted their storytelling to be successful, they had to take ownership of the characters (which is what they did when naming the Dwarfs for SW).

The best example of this is Jiminy Cricket. He's a character that is basically non existent in the original story, and Disney not only made him a pivotal part of the film, they turned him into a Disney trademark that has outlived the film more than any other character including Pinocchio. Jiminy Cricket is the anchor of the film, really. He's a catalyzer for a lot of the action, but he is also comic relief in many cases, and the wise know it all in other cases. In some cases he even acts as all 3. Let's remember that he is also the narrator of the film, so in some stances he will speak up and sort of reflect the audience's point of view. A character that acts and works as so many things in a film is truly brilliant.

Pinocchio as the title character is also interesting to study. A lot of people can say that Pinocchio is kind of preachy (which it is), but I think that's a result of the character itself. Because Pinocchio embodies a lot of naivete that I think was present in kids a lot in the 20th century. Pinocchio comes off as very ignorant of the world around him and for good reason. Because here's what I think is interesting: I don't feel like Pinocchio comes off as a preachy film because of what happens to the character when he smokes or drinks or lies. I think it comes off as preachy because all of that happens to him as a result of forfeiting education. He deviates from going to school and that results in him making a lot of misinformed decisions. And the film is very clear in following the classical fantasy story pattern in that matter because it's very clear about the horrible things that happen to you if you don't have a conscience.

On the other hand, the goodness of Gepetto is a contrast to Pinocchio, I think. Because he is an inherently good person, and his actions reflect that because the Fairy is so thankful and appreciative of his good actions that she rewards him with Pinocchio. So it's interesting to see them in a contrasting light. And how ultimately Pinocchio comes to the realization that Gepetto truly deserves better and that drives him to make the brave rescue in the end.

I'll also add that Figaro and Cleo make for STUNNING character design. Their emotion is so clear and so spot on! They are such good sidekicks to Gepetto, even if they only appear for a short period of time in the film. But their design and the use of them in the film is really remarkable and of fantastic emotional weight.

The Design
The design of Pinocchio is something that honestly didn't pop at me until I watched it on bluray. Very much like Snow White, Pinocchio has a style that follows the tradition of classical story books. The warmth in the coloring, the soft, rounded figures all reminisce of classic, kid aimed story books.
That being said, Pinocchio is a lot more refined than Snow White. It is quite evident that Walt had more money and a bigger team working on the film. The detail work is more evident, and the coloring more precise.
There are way too many backgrounds that look straight out of Rembrandt pieces, their light work is _that_ good. The lighting really stands out, honestly, their work is precise and fantastic. There is not one frame that misses the italian warmth of the setting and the story.

Also, all the design work in the toys, in the clocks and Gepetto's shop is flawless. Every clock is beautifully animated, and so detailed and colored to perfection. It is really quite remarkable work, and once again it shows off that Walt had a lot more money and people working on the film.

Special effects by the way, are spectacular. It's ridiculous how good some of them are. Especially the ones done on the Blue Fairy.

The Music
I have to be honest. A lot of the music goes by unremarkably for me. I don't feel like the score is as good as the Snow White score, but there is something special about Pinocchio: When You Wish Upon a Star.
That song became not just one of the most notorious song of its time, but an absolute Disney symbol and a legend. It's a song that puts into words everything that Disney really is about: dreams and fantasy and imagination. Everything about it is special and referent to Disney, and looking back it's no wonder it became a Disney symbol.
I also think it's really special that the song, the biggest song, the one that really talks about the greatest thing Disney wants to put forward, it's a song that goes to the smallest, most humble character in the film. It's not for the lead, it's not for the fairy; it goes to the little bug in the tuxedo. It's quite beautiful and inspiring.
Other than that, I think I've Got No Strings deserves a mention for being such a fun song and for having such a beautifully made performance sequence.

The Digital Restoration
Pinocchio is ridiculously good on bluray. The restoration makes the film look so bright and detailed. Every frame looks stunning. Every part of it looks colorful and sharp, and the film does not look a year old in the transfer. The shadows and the lights are beautifully detailed and there is not one scratch or flaw on it. The movie has NEVER looked better and it probably never will. Stunning work, worth every penny.

https://snowweisz.livejournal.com/172756.html?view=comments#comments
when you wish upon a star","#filmsnobalert","reviewing movies cause i'm a film snob","disneywatch 2011
I've thought very hard about how to really comment or criticize Disney films and ultimately think it's very hard to find a set of rules, or a guideline that could be helpful.
But I do believe, like Roy once said that there are 3 things that are pivotal to good Disney films. #1. Great story, #2. Great songs. But third and most importantly, remarkable characters.
So in thinking of a formula that would be sort of easy to follow, I think these are things that are definitely worth noting:

.The Characters. Not just in their personalities and how they are presented to the audience, but also in how they are designed and how much detail they have.
.The Music. Like Howard Ashman said, for a film to be Disney canon, its music has to be very memorable, very special and quite particular. I should say in advance that I think this isn't the case for every Disney film, but music will nevertheless be a special part of what I'll want to look for.
.The Design. Each of these films have a very particular visual approach. And I think studying the visual design is also a very specific way to outline the objectives and the ideas of the company at a certain time.
.The Digital Restoration. Where applicable, I will address the restorations, because Disney has done a rather impeccable job with their digital transfers and their restorations. Not every company is making their films look brand new and so vibrant and stunning.
.Overall impressions on the themes and the story. I'm not sure if I will try to rate them, but I will try to gather a general perception of the film and try to make a simple interpretation of it.

THAT BEING SAID:

I am quite attached to Snow White, for obvious reasons.
But my attachment to Snow White is a recent thing, and my growing into actually, genuinely appreciating this film is more a matter of my growing nerdiness for film in general. I wasn't particularly attached to this film as a kid, and more than just a long time, it took a lot of knowledge about film and film history to see it for the cinematic breakthrough that it is.

In general, I think there are many elements to this film that are not necessarily clear to children, and while children will find every 5 dollar gag funny and endearing, I think the overall complexity of the film was aimed at an older audience at the time. However, the film continues to get some backslash from Disney fandom and I think I know why. I think that older audience, in this times, is not interested in a film like this. While younger audiences grow out of the 5 dollar gags very fast. And it takes some ... I guess acquired taste to be into a film like this one.

There is also something very, very interesting about the music that I'll address on the music part.

The Characters
The character work on Snow White is so groundbreaking. A lot of the times that's hard to put into perspective because it's such an old film and we're used to modern characterization. But Snow White is so clever!
Snow White as a character provides most of the emotional load of the film, while the dwarfs are the comic relief. The other characters are counter points to move their stories on.

It's amusing to see how fandom reacts to Snow White as a character these days. People think she's too submissive and too annoying. But it's borderline heartbreaking to see people react to her that way. It's quite obvious to me that she's just incredibly good. She's an innocent kid and quite naive, of course, but she is also very kind hearted. She is put in a terrible situation and to be quite frank, she makes the best of it. She makes a serious effort to make the best out of what she gets with what she knows.
It's quite obvious that her stepmother has made sure she doesn't know much of anything except housekeeping, and she uses that to put herself to an advantage. To give the dwarfs something that would in return provide her with a house.
I think that makes her quite remarkable. She does what she can and is successful at getting what she wants out of it.

ALSO THIS: People have said that she's motherly and enjoys housekeeping too much. But WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT?
I love to cook, and I'm motherly and enjoy hosting. How in the world is that a bad thing? Of course at the time the film was released many women did only that, but I think it's a reflection of bad and misguided feminism to get on her for that, when clearly at this age women can do whatever they want and ALSO enjoy being in the house and cooking and hosting and mothering. But I hate those misguided feminism arguments so I won't get into it anymore.
Suffice it to say, she's a BAMF.

Like I said, the dwarfs are very much comic relief and I think they are mostly a counterpoint to Snow White in their emotional development. But in general they are comic characters aimed at kids. I think this is why I find them generally irrelevant to my interests. But still think it's quite remarkable how they are so well characterized and are each so interesting. Grumpy is my absolute favorite because I think he's the one who grows the most, but also because I have a soft spot for his need to show as little emotion as possible when it's obvious he does care. GPOY TBH.

Also real quick: I've noticed some reactions to The Prince and how come Snow White loves him if they've barely seen each other. Well here's what: IT IS A MUSICAL. And it is called time compression. When people share any kind of romantic singing in a musical, you have to suspend your disbelief and realize that by the end of that musical number, the protagonists are clearly in love. That's it.

The Design
I think the greatest thing about Snow White is how sophisticated it is. The complexity of the design and the characterization is something that is truly groundbreaking. It needs to be said that up until that point, even the best Silly Symphonies were just little music pieces. Snow White not only broke through the length of the usual cartoons, but it did it with a level of sophistication and with an attention to detail that really made it quite special. Because it also needs to be said that even fantastic Silly Symphonies like Elmer Elephant, Three Little Wolves or Music Land, while very well done they were not designed with this amount of detail and care. And most of all with this fidelity.

Also it's worth noting that there is something very special about the old school, european fairy tale look of the film. All of the backgrounds were watercolored, and very classically drawn. While the characters are a compromise between that classic design but also a very modern feel in their colorful schemes and their Disney trademarks, with big eyes and very round, heartwarming lines. That makes them all incredibly beautiful but still in a very human way, which is something that later films (especially in the Renaissance period) lacked.
The film looks very much like an old fairy tale book, but there is a level of artistry in it that I think has not aged at all. That is one of the reasons why the film is still so current, because its design concept is still very clear. Some of the films that followed it, tried to replicate this style and many of them were unsuccessful, but Snow White was very successful in its design objectives.

The Music
It's interesting to note that generally it is said that the first book musical was Oklahoma in the 40's. But Snow White is very much the essence of a book musical. There was a great level of care and complexity in the songwriting because every song illustrates storytelling.
This isn't that surprising because Walt had been doing that very thing in most Silly Symphonies by then.
But it is quite remarkable for full length features.

Also it's worth noting that the songs are very interesting in that they balance, very particularly that old school feel of the movie with a modern reaction to music. The music is very much what people liked to hear in the 30's, but with just enough elements to keep it tied with the look of the film.
And yet, it has such a beautiful, upbeat and cheerful feel to it, that it's charming and engaging to hear it today. I can jam shamelessly to Whistle While You Work ANY day.

The Digital Restoration
Maybe a lot of what I'm saying now is influenced by the fact that the Bluray edition is almost ridiculously good. I realize Disney has restored its films frame but frame but the work on Snow White is out of the park, really. The film does not look a day old in its brightness or its coloring. It's absolutely perfect and quite a joy to watch. For a film that is almost 80 years old, it's quite amazing that there is not one scratch of it on the transfer. Absolute AA+ on the transfer.

TL;DR sorry.
https://snowweisz.livejournal.com/172328.html?view=comments#comments
disney nerding on another level","#filmsnobalert","disneywatch 2011","needs more tags","disney is amazing","movies","snow white ofc
https://snowweisz.livejournal.com/172047.html
Thu, 26 May 2011 06:48:57 GMT
OH HELLO. I did host a Christmas eve dinner, had fun on Christmas day, went to the beach for like 3 days, and then last night had an okay time, I guess. And lots of wine.

I won't lie, things could be way better. But hfc they can't but get better from here on, yk? That's kinda my attitude for 2011: from here, I can only go forwards. And it's funny cause I think for the first time in a loooooong time, that's a resolution that I am completely comfortable with. I didn't even shed any tears last night. Not even after I got it on with the wine. Idk, things _will_ get better because I honestly can't see them getting any worse. Things will look up, I have to believe it.

So yeah.

Well also, I wrapped up my 2010 Scrapbook and I closed the year at 163 movies which sounds pretty awesome for my 2011 goal of 200.
I find that making a scrapbook gives me a very accurate sense of things tbh. I see very clearly where I've been through the year and idk, it's comforting. To know that I collected some of these moments and things and that they won't disappear away into the internet. Or something.
In short, there is A LOT of Lost, jjverse, Oceanaldi, Fringe, Disney and then towards the end some Ravenclaw :)

After I post this, I'll do some work on my 2011 with some banners and stuff and then I'll be on it one more time. Hopefully, it'll be just as successful.

Okay I lie, after I post this, I will go update on DisneyVerse because the holidays and my beach trip made me neglect it omg how shameful.

So idk, I might have to knock on wood as I say this, but I just wanted to write this entry to let it be on record that i feel positive about 2011. So in chronicling said event, I wrote my eMac, Coco the following requiem:

Oh Coco!
We had a good life, and our time together had its ups and downs but it was generally pleasant. We learned many things together, like editing videos, the wonders of iWork and the <s>dis</s>pleasures of Illustrator. We learned the ways of Photoshop and VectorWorks and you showed me how to use Flash against my better judgement. We went through all the basics of living your life with a mac and you started an endless road of Apple products that will never end for me. You were with me during prime H/Hr times, when I became addicted to LOST, and even when I joined _twatlight. I should also mention that I really appreciate those times I used you to seed the ballet torrents I downloaded. We've had many years together and you must admit that until Coppelia came into my life you were my #1. I will always think of you fondly.

I'm sorry to part with you Coco, but I cannot keep you around gathering dust while you get older and less valuable. Not to mention I am passing the Mac torch on to my cousin and he will give you an honorable end to your existence while using you to what you did so fine with me: convert me without hope of return.
I loved you.

Thank you for the moneys you are providing me with for this holiday season, me and my new bluray appreciate it very much. Maybe I'll watch a movie. In the past 10 days I have screwed up my body clock. Big time. I hardly sleep at night except for a few hours and then I spend the morning quite okay but the afternoon totally kills me and I end up napping it away. The other day I tried not to nap and instead went to bed early... and it still was all wrecked the next day. Idek what to do at this point I'll just keep trying to go to bed a bit earlier every night and to nap a little less and maybe slowly I'll get back to something kinda normal.

So tonight, after I watched The Rocky Horror Picture Show, I cleaned up my downloads folder cause I've downloaded a ton of stuff I hadn't put together (mostly a lot of music).
Since it was released, I've had the LOST season 6 score and I had not dared to listen to it. Let's just say while I was clearing away my folder I listened to it and realized why I hadn't done it before. And in case that's not clear enough, it involved tears. Lots of them at 2 am.

Oh show, I just want you to know: I'm not over you yet. Ik I do a good job at playing the part of being over you but I'm really not. I miss you LOST. I've also watched The Duchess twice this week. Partly because it was on tv but also because something about that film drives me so insane. I love it but not in the omg I am in love way... more in a very god I find it so intriguing... Even tho the film itself is quite simple. Idk I guess it has a lot more balance than other period films of the same tone, where Marie Antoinette is too over the top that it becomes almost a joke and Pride and Prejudice is too simple that it blurs away a little, The Duchess is a lot more balanced.
Or maybe I just guilty pleasure it a lot.

Penny is sleeping next to me and I'm jealous of her. I blame xmaidelx because it is indeed all her fault. Looking at you, kid. Idk, it has lots of different sounds and things and I dig it. A lot.

So how about that nanowrimo thing that is you know, HAPPENING NEXT MONTH WHICH IS LIKE 2 WEEKS AWAY FUCK THAT, MAKE IT 10 DAYS.
fml I haven't planned ANYTHING for that. Not a thing. I mean I have an idea and I think I kinda expect it to come Nov 1st, if hopefully I'm not too hangover (as has been the case the past 2 years lmao) I will sit down with a Pages file and things will just start to write themselves. The first time I did Nano I planned a lot of shit and then it all went down the drain come chapter like 4. It was just so retarded ugh. I didn't have trouble writing stuff down, or padding my word count. My problem was with actually moving the plot. My plot was a mess, I had like 30k and I hadn't gone anywhere with it and it fucking sucked. When I look back now, I think that's the reason I didn't finish that novel even after nano. It's that I could never move the plot forward and I felt like that was binding me too hard.
I've thought that maybe I could write it in a style like The English Patient. Very disjointed, non linear storytelling and have it be like a lot of random shit that eventually does end up making sense. Idk sigh. I just don't want to sit down and plan a lot of bullshit because ik now that I have a hard time sticking down to plans in the long term when it comes to writing. I know it's a very organic experience to write (well for me, I guess it's different for everyone) down a novel and i guess if I do end up penning this down it will have to be that kind of thing, where I sort of sit down and see if the story comes to me. Well, make it come, but let it come however it wants.

IIIIIIIdk

I really feel like I MUST try to do it and get it done. I mean, I really am in a moment of my life where I literally have nothing at all to lose. Well idk I guess we'll see in 11 days.

OH OH OH
I made it to the finals of wd_lims. Messing up a lot of shit throughout the season, up to the last minute and then scrambling through the last 55 minutes to fix it is not exciting or fast pacing or amazing. It's bullshit. And by scrambling around you are not even solving anything. You are drawing yet more circles around plot lines that are burntout. There was far too much rushing and running around. Too many forced devices to tie in stories. None of them worked.

I don't think he realizes that having stories solve themselves magically in the end only means that nothing ever climaxes. There are no high points in the drama because the characters are not walking through their arc properly. And this also means that the audience had no time to really feel any empathy towards the characters because their arc is so messed up. If you can't find any kind of empathy towards a character then the audience will not be invested in your shit resolution.

Finally, I am just glad it's over. It's not even a guilty pleasure. And I think that kinda happened last night. Just for clarification I am going to list all the things that were wrong with this episode and this will go on to prove how obsessed I am with it that I thought all of this was actually amazing.

#1. Damon was whipped. I don't like it when my bb gets all whipped. He's vulnerable and sad and emotional and crazy. It isn't even like the mean and fun kinda vibe he had before on s1. It's like, Spike in season 6. It's quite upsetting omg and I still loved the shit out of it.

#2. That Katherine is a basic bitch. But fuck, she made shit hit the fan and it was intense.

#3. Tyler was kind of a douche and an emo kid but omg I felt bad for Tyler lol WHAT ARE THESE EMOTIONS

#4. Stefan was all bamf. What the fuck, how does that happen? And he was owning Uncle John and I was CHEERING FOR STEFAN HOW THE FUCK. Although I am indeed sad to see Uncle John go. Needs more Sark. Always.

#5. THIS EPISODE HAD NO WARNER AT ALL WTF IS THAT HOW THE FUCK DID I LIKE THIS EPISODE IF IT HAD NO MATT DAVIS WHAT THE FUCK

#6. Bonnie was a lot in this episode. And normally that would have no redeeming quality but Katherine pwnd the bitch, told it to her like it is and it was delightful to watch.

I loved this episode seriously. I loved it. I watched it twice. I fucking converted wtf happened to me I was all about the snark of this stupid show omg. Not that it's not stupid still, shows about vampires have a stupid element to them, but TAKE SOME FUCKING NOTES, ALAN BALL THIS IS HOW A VAMPIRE SHOW GETS SHIT DONE.

When True Blood is being such a dirty, sticky, undesirable mess, TVD feels so refreshing and amazing. I love it. I mean, let's be honest; TVD has things and characters that are not even relevant to my interests and I am still loving it. Whereas TB has all these <s>eye candy</s> things that are indeed relevant to my interests and I still can't stand it omg it's such crap. Okay so, I've decided (today) that I'm gonna wake up on Mondays and then go back to sleep. The past 2 Monday mornings I have had the most glorious dreams with Ian in them. Like, a week ago I don't rly remember much except that it was def like, lmao not pg-13 rated. At all.
And then today I had this rly qt dream, I was like, at my old high school with some friends and then Ian and I went for a hike, but I was wearing heels and a skirt so we got to this like, little part where I couldn't climb a part of the trail by myself so then he like, took my hand and helped me. And he was like "lol isn't that skirt kind of revealing?" and I was like "lol that's the purpose" and he laughed and held me.
And I woke up smiling like a dumbass.

Speaking of Ian, I exhausted his movie catalog during August. Nothing worthy of reporting lol

#4. I got into Project Runway again. It is amazing, Tim Gunn is a God, and I hate Gretchen I hope she burns and all of the world watches it on tv. And I digged Michael C's last win. Idg these idiots saying that OMG HE CAN'T MAKE A PATTERN. Bitch, hello but there is way more to a good designer than making a pattern. His last outfit was daring, innovative, wearable, cool. As opposed to Gretchen's recycled ideas from 2 years ago. Hello girl, 2007 called, it would like its colors back.

#5. So, kaelakaelakaela and savaburry finally caved and started watching LOST. I am both jealous of them, and endeared tremendously of how much they adore it. They are qt little addicts. And Kaela will be done with s6 by the end of this week. It's amazing tbh.
I love watching Lost with them, plus Sarah and Nia and Tanya and Anj and Jenny and Cat. It's been a good week. I was really heartbroken because they loved Boone and well, we all know how that went. And they both adored Charlie, so lol not getting better. But yeah.
It's made me realize that if there is one thing I really would love to share with everyone, it's LOST. It's so amazing, and thought provoking and complex. I really am so obsessed with it.

Speaking of which, if all goes well in about a week I'll be ordering my LOST package. CANNOT WAIT OMG. Also, I convinced my mom to watch it all with me and my sister. We may get my aunt in it too. GOOD TIMES WILL BE HAD. I SHALL CHRONICLE THEM HERE.

#6. I have started to really use my TUMBLR. As you can predict, however, it has lots of LOST, Disney, and Ian. Though I do reblog some funny stuff when I can and Cat and I do have some good moments lol. Anyway, follow pls if you don't already.

#7. So like, Jorgen and I sometimes talk during the nights on aim. We have fun lol. But anyway, the other day he tried to get me to watch some JKR documentary. And I did. Though he did it mostly to try and get me into a HP mood and I was like yeah idk that won't work. Which it didn't.
But it made me think I rly wish sometimes that I was into HP. I see most of my f'list really excited about it and I'm like, jeez that could've been me! But idk, it's like I associate HP with a part of my life that is over. And I think I mostly would like that back.

#8. So like, my cousin Wendy and I have been drifting apart. She's like omg so obsessed with her bf. It's awesome she has someone who isn't a total dick and all, but she's like, dragging him around ALL the time. She keeps blowing us (me or my sister) off for him, even though she sees him every day. And when she does hang around us she's like bored all the time and borderline hostile. Like, last Saturday we wanted to go out all 3 of us plus our other cousin. And when we asked her she was like Oh no I have to go somewhere with my bf. And we were like w/e. So turns out he blew her off last minute and she ended up coming to my house, closeted in the guest bedroom, fighting with him over the phone.
It sucks cause we've been good friends forever. But ugh, srsly girl. I ain't about to put up with this shit. I'll sit here and wait till you realize you have more family other than him.

#9. My thesis date is getting postponed. Yet. Again. This time because my mom and I are still struggling with money rn. And I can't afford to pay for the fees to present + the presentation expenses. It all goes up to like $1500 that I simply do not have rn. So my mom and my dad are like, going to team up and my mom and my aunt are gonna sell some real state they have to like, get out of some debts, make some repairs and upgrades on this house, and get me some money from that to do it. Hoping and praying so much. It's been really frustrating to get so held back. Because I do want to finish, so badly. But I can't risk going all out and then finding another block, this time a money one. So yeah, can't do it.
Praying, srsly. I need that to work out so I can do this. Pray for me, you guys. I need this so bad.

#10. Random but my most played track last month was Leading Me On. LULZ.

#11. Challenge 22 of picspammy was my idea and I am running it this month.
