Session #7 – “Look at the Carnage!” – 5/16/15

This was a particularly deadly session for the party’s NPC’s and hirelings, Plumb the rogue and four meatshields lost their lives due to some unlucky wandering monster rolls and a few powerful skeletons. DM note: One of the things I’ve tried to do with the encounters in the Caves of Woe is make them unusual or different in some way. In this case, I gave the ‘fossil skeletons’ 2 HD and had them taking half damage from edged weapons and arrows.

PCs:

Garros the Dwarf FM
M’Segobaor the Elf MU/FM
Gar Eblo the FM

NPCs:

Farfuleg the Bold – A fighting-man rescued from the dungeons who agreed to stay on and help
Plumb the Rogue –RIP Killed by giant rats!

Hirelings:

Philmul- RIP Had his skull crushed by a skeleton!
Omes – RIP Killed by a single giant rat bite!
Mich – RIP Put out of his misery by a skeleton!
Lagnick – RIP Also killed by a skeleton!
Aelzef the porter, Blart the wagon driver

The party continued exploration of the southwest area of caves, mapping the swamp entrance from above (via a hole in a large tree). Wandering monsters were the order of the day for this session, the party was weakened first by a few wolves, then by a swarm of giant rats, who proved particularly deadly. Both Plumb and Omes fell in a battle against five of the creatures. A giant spider wandering the corridors, however,Skeleton - From the BFRPG Field Guide gave Garros no troubles.

A secret door noted by M the Elf led to a small sealed-off section of dungeon containing three rooms, infested by powerful skeleton warriors. The skeletons were turned early on by Brother Gar, but in trying to battle and fully vanquish the undead creatures, three more mercenaries were killed. Only the use of smart tactics saved the rest of the party, who retreated early on and funneled the skeletons towards them in small numbers.

From amongst Garros' Handaxethe rubble in the skeleton rooms, Garros was quite pleased to have recovered a magical handaxe that returned to his hand each time it was thrown.

Random Cryptworld Character Statblocks

Cryptworld

One of my gripes with the Pacesetter games like Cryptworld is that character generation is way too fiddly, requiring mental math at each step. Isn’t that what computers are for? With this, you get six stat blocks, with all the calculations done for you – pick one, copy down the stats on the character sheet, pick skills and paranormal talents (PTs) based on the starting numbers, and you’re done. Here is the link – just reload it as many times as you like:

Cryptworld Statblock Generator

You could use this for Majus and Timemaster too, but the rules are slightly different. Majus allows the player to choose two or three starting magical adits, and get one or two starting PTs depending on that choice (so ignore the last column for Majus statblocks). Timemaster’s table for penetration bonuses is slightly different from the others, as are the PT acquisition rules. All that said, the core stats are identical, so you could use it for any of the games with little effort (and at some point I’ll update it so it can be used for all of them directly).

Session #6 – “Playing in Filth” – 5/3/15

PCs:

Garros the Dwarf Fighter (level 2)
M’Segobaor the Elf MU/FM
Gar Eblo the Fighter

NPCs:

Farfuleg the Bold – A fighting-man rescued from the dungeons who agreed to stay on and help
Plumb the Rogue – A Hobbit rescued from the dungeons who is in search of a wish-granting statue

Hirelings:

Tredron – RIP, run through by a bandit’s sword
Alray – RIP, torn asunder by a filth-licker
Philmul – Mercenary who survived!
Aelzef the porter, Blart the wagon driver

The party continued cautious exploration via the northern-most cave entrance. First encountered were three filth-lickers living in a cesspool, their barbed tongues killing the mercenary Alray before they themselves were dispatched. Two other cavern exits were found – one up a long staircase (protected by a lightning trap which Garros narrowly avoided), and one a cave open to a swamp area. A pool in a cave near the swamp exit harbored a giant crab, and a group of bandits were tracked to their hideout deeper in the caves. The ensuing battle with the bandits cost Tredron his life, while one bandit fell in retribution. M’Segabaor the Elf slept the other four and they were captured and later returned to Ravendale. On the way out of the caves, a pair of wandering cyclorcs was encountered – one fell immediately in a hail of missile fire, the other decided he would run rather than face the large, well-armed group.

Back in Ravendale, the party’s reputation continues to grow, and reports of night-time abductions have all but ceased. With their newly-found wealth, they have purchased a small house on a plot owned by the Temple.
