How It Works

Kickoff and Platform Access

We grant access to the Smart EPD platform and align on scope, PCRs, timelines, and data needs. You then log in to create a new project workspace to name the project, add your team, and set up the structure for EPD development.

Select a PCR

Select the Product Category Rules (PCR) used for study. Our pre-built PCR templates map directly to required inputs, guiding you through all relevant life cycle modules so nothing is missed.

Submit Materials via Smart EPD Platform

Your consultant or internal LCA team uploads the LCA report and supporting materials for verification. Using our PCR-conformant templates, you create EPDs and add text and images directly in the Smart EPD platform. You can also set and track project timelines within the platform, and if you use a native LCA tool, submissions can be completed seamlessly through the Smart EPD API.

Independent Verification

Smart EPD assigns an independent verifier who reviews your supporting materials, LCA model, and draft EPD(s). You’ll receive consolidated reviewer comments — typically within about two weeks — to address before finalization.

Digital Publication + PDF

Once verified, your EPD is published digitally in the Smart EPD Library. A downloadable, standards‑compliant PDF version is automatically generated from the digital source.

Procurement Push + Annual Maintenance + Republication

Smart EPD pushes your EPD data to procurement tools like EC3, supports annual maintenance requirements, and manages republication workflows to ensure your EPD stays up to date.

Digital EPD Publication

Once verified, we publish EPDs as digital-native records in the Smart EPD Library with a five‑year validity period. EPDs can be downloaded as PDFs.

Verification of LCA Platforms

Smart EPD verifies LCA software platforms to ensure accurate unit process calculations and LCA results in full conformance with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.

Digital EPD Sharing

Using our API, we publish your EPDs directly to procurement platforms like EC3, increasing your products’ visibility in the global marketplace.

EPD Updates

We support minor revisions (e.g., product descriptions, logos, images, certifications) and publish Variant EPDs when your data changes within a pre‑verified template.
