Due to the intrusion of various real life things in 2024, it was not a year that I got a lot of subtitling done. I even struggled to keep up with my credits and quality checking of Dr. Slump episodes, and I didn’t get any rare old VHS stuff posted to MySpleen. That said, as 2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the Lensman anime, I’m pleased to announce that right at the end of the year we’ve finally finished subtitling the Lensman TV series!
The Lensman TV project was a dream come true. Only the first six episodes have ever gotten a home media release in Japan, Since helping the /m/subs crew with the Lensman movie in 2015, we started subtitling the TV series as a joint project with them in 2016. This has been a labor of love for all involved. Thanks to sky79 for the translation, starseeker for translation QC, MartyMcFlies for final checks, Alrow for the Laserdisc rips, Dougo13 for the Betamax rips, Laurine for the VHS rips, Kineko Video for the 16mm rip of episode 23, and RetroAwesome for the restored versions of episodes 24-25, with the Japanese audio combined with the Catalan dub.
How many American anime fans out there were familiar with the Lensman movie (probably thanks to the Streamline dub) but had no idea that a TV series was rushed into production to capitalize on the success of the movie? Well, with both movie and TV series now you can make up your own minds about how the series stacks up against the movie, and indeed against the original novels by E. E. “Doc” Smith.
