About (OLD: frellingfangirl.wordpress.com)

Hi there, fellow fangirls and fanboys! 🙂

For years – or rather decades – I’ve kept my thoughts about my pop-culture passions largely to myself or at least to a relatively small circle of (German-speaking) friends and family.

One night about two years ago, I couldn’t sleep and suddenly the idea of writing about „Why I love“ certain actors or films popped into my restless mind. I also contemplated other ideas, such as writing about my experiences as an ESL (English as a second language) teacher. The first thing I did back then was getting up and writing a sort of humorous column about something school-related. Months later (March 2013) I decided to start blogging and created my German blog singendelehrerin.wordpress.com, on which I mainly publish reviews on movies, share particularly funny mistakes of my students and write about some of my singing projects.

Then I discovered the amazing Sci-Fi series Farscape – 14 years after it first aired on American TV. How? It was at Fedcon 22 in 2013 when I had the pleasure of seeing Ben „John Crichton“ Browder and Claudia „Aeryn Sun“ Black on stage – and it was love at first sight! These two had such a great chemistry on stage that I HAD to find out how that translated on screen. And boy, it does so wonderfully!

So, after watching the whole series I felt I wanted to share my thoughts on some – if not all – episodes, a little bit like the folks who wrote Farscape Season One: Through the Rabbit Hole (Deconstructing Moya – A Farscape Rewatch Project) . I did start my own rewatch project and had big plans and hoped to connect with more Farscape fans. That’s where the „frelling“ in my name comes from – only „Scapers“ would know what to make of this (just as Battlestar Galactica Fans use „What the frak?“).

However, as the year progressed I stumbled over the vampire series Moonlight (a short-lived series from 2007) and fell completely and utterly in love with main character Mick St. John, played by Alex O’Loughlin. So I started to watch everything that he has starred in and have by now written more about him and his work than about Farscape. That doesn’t mean that I’m not a Scaper anymore – it’s just that for now my priorities have shifted.

Most recently I’ve revived my idea of writing „Why I love…“ columns, something which I’m going to expand in 2014.

Check out my „fangirl experiences“, too, if you like!

  1. I’m really impressed. I’ve never come across someone who likes exactly(!) what I do on the actor-drama front. And farscape. And an ESL teacher. I’m thinking of infiltrating the Trafalgar Studios archive for footage of The Ruling Class and Macbeth, since I couldn’t watch them live 😉

    1. Thanks for your comment. 🙂 Hey, if you’ve successfully infiltrated the Trafalgar Studios Archive, I’d be interested in MACBETH too 😉 – my „theater in London“ obsession started later than that. 😥

      1. Oh, and I’d like to add that this blog has been dormant for quite a while. As I’ve never really managed to get any followers here, I’ve stuck to my (mostly) German-speaking blog. Some entries there are in English, too, and I’ve moved the „Why I love“-sections there, but the great bulk of my blog entries are in German.
