Your first goal is much smaller: finish one tiny game that another person can play.

I originally got into programming because I wanted to make games. The trap I fell into is the same one I see beginners fall into now. You spend months learning tools, but you never finish anything. A working game, even a crude one, teaches you more than another month of disconnected tutorials.

How to start game development

Use this order:

Choose one kind of game.

Pick one engine that fits it.

Rebuild a tiny game you already understand.

Cut the scope until you can finish.

Publish it and get someone to play it.

Notice what’s missing. You do not need an original story, a giant design document, or your dream multiplayer game. Those can come later. Right now you need a short feedback loop between an idea, some code, and a playable result.

Choose an engine by the game you want to make

There is no universally best game engine. Pick the one that makes your first project easier.

Engine

Good first fit

Main programming path

What to watch for

Godot

Small 2D games and lightweight 3D projects

GDScript or C#

A friendly starting point, but a smaller job and asset market than Unity or Unreal

Unity

2D, mobile, indie 3D, and broad cross-platform work

C#

Lots of learning material can tempt you into tutorial hopping

Unreal Engine

High-fidelity 3D, first-person games, and visual prototyping

Blueprints and C++

A powerful editor with more moving parts for a tiny first game

Godot’s official documentation describes it as a free, open-source engine for 2D and 3D games. Unity’s official beginner path starts with small guided projects. Epic’s current Unreal documentation teaches new users with both Blueprints and C++. Those are real differences, but none of them matter if you keep changing engines.

Choose one and stay with it until the first game is published.

Which programming language should a beginner learn?

Learn the language your chosen engine uses.

If you choose Godot, start with GDScript unless you already know C#. If you choose Unity, use C#. If you choose Unreal, Blueprints can help you understand gameplay logic before you go deep into C++.

You do not need to master the language first. Learn enough syntax to build the next part of your game. Variables make a score work. Conditions detect a win or loss. Functions keep repeated behavior in one place. Classes and components start making sense when your project needs them.

This is still real programming. The game gives every new concept a job.

Your first game should be embarrassingly small

Pick something like Pong, Breakout, a one-screen platformer, or a Flappy Bird-style game. You already understand the rules, so you can focus on implementation.

A good first project has:

one player action;

one obstacle or opponent;

a clear win, loss, or score state;

one scene or level;

placeholder art you are willing to replace later.

If the design needs an inventory system, online accounts, a skill tree, and twelve levels, it is not a first project. Save the idea. Build one mechanic from it instead.

A four-week beginner game development plan

Week 1: make one mechanic work

Install the engine, complete one official beginner lesson, and create a new project. Get a character, paddle, or object moving. Put the project in Git before you think you need version control.

At the end of the week, you should be able to press Play and interact with something.

Week 2: build the complete game loop

Add the obstacle, collision, score, and restart behavior. Use ugly shapes if you have to. A complete loop matters more than polished art.

Have one person play it without explaining the controls. Watch where they get stuck.

Week 3: add feedback and remove friction

Now add sound, clearer visuals, a start screen, and a simple end state. Fix the bugs that stop a player from finishing.

Do not add a second game. Finish this one.

Week 4: publish it

Create a build, write a short description, add screenshots, and publish a public project page. itch.io’s creator documentation walks through creating and publishing a game page, and a free account is enough to start.

Put the source on GitHub if you are comfortable sharing it. Write down what you built, what broke, and what you would change. That short postmortem turns the project into useful portfolio evidence.

What about game art?

Use simple shapes, free starter assets, or a tightly limited asset pack for the first version. Your job is to make the mechanics readable.

You can learn pixel art, modeling, animation, and sound design later. Trying to become an artist and a programmer before you ship anything doubles the number of ways to stall.

If art is the part you love, reverse the emphasis. Use visual scripting or a starter template, then focus on one small playable scene. The rule stays the same: finish something.

How to learn without getting trapped in tutorials

A tutorial is useful when it answers a question your project created. It becomes a problem when completing tutorials replaces building.

Use this rhythm:

Try to build the next feature.

Write down the exact thing blocking you.

Find the smallest lesson or documentation page that answers it.

Close the lesson and reproduce the result in your own project.

You will move slower at first. Good. The struggle is where you learn to debug, read documentation, and break a vague problem into smaller ones.

Can game development become a career?

Yes, but enjoying games is not the same as enjoying game development.

Build two or three small games before making a career decision. You need experience with the actual work: debugging, tools, teamwork, deadlines, and finishing. My longer guide on whether a game development career is viable covers that decision in more detail. You can also compare the economics in software development versus game development.

Do not wait for permission to test the path. Build a game small enough to finish, publish it, and see if you still want to make the next one.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need advanced math to make games?

Not for a simple first game. Basic arithmetic and coordinates will take you a long way. Learn vectors, physics, and more advanced math when your project gives you a reason.

How long does it take to make a first game?

Your scope decides. A one-mechanic clone can be finished in a few weekends. A dream game can absorb years. Set a four-week deadline and keep cutting features until you can hit it.

Should I build an engine from scratch?

Only if engine programming is the skill you want to learn. If your goal is to make a game, use an existing engine and spend your effort on the game.

Do I need a game development degree?

No degree substitutes for finished work. Formal study can give you structure and access to a team, but you still need playable projects that show what you can do.

Existing game development resources

The article previously referenced these learning resources, which are retained for readers who use them: Learning C# by Developing Games with Unity and Mastering Unity 2D Game Development.
