Soroca (Russian: Сороки, romanized: Soroki, Ukrainian: Сороки, romanized: Soroky, Polish: Soroki, Yiddish: סאָראָקע Soroke) is a city[2] in Moldova. It is near the Dniester river. It is the administrative center of the Soroca District.

Soroca is a city in the north of Moldova. It is next to the Dniester River. About 22,000 people live there.

History and the Fortress The city is famous for its old castle, called Soroca Fortress. A famous ruler, Stephen the Great (Ștefan cel Mare), built a wooden castle there in 1499. Later, it was rebuilt with stone. It is round and has five towers. Many tourists visit it every year.

Interesting Places

  • The Thanksgiving Candle: This is a tall monument on a hill. You have to climb 600 steps to reach it, but from the top, you can see a beautiful view of the river and the city.
  • The Gypsy Hill: Soroca is known for its many large and colorful houses. Some houses look like famous buildings, such as the United States Capitol or the Bolshoi Theatre.

Geography Soroca is very close to the border with Ukraine. You can cross the river by boat to go to the other side.
