Polar aprotic solvent

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A polar aprotic solvent is a type of solvent that is polar (its electrons are unevenly spread between atoms) but not protic (it has no hydrogen atoms that make hydrogen bonds). This effects the type of chemicals they can dissolve and how the solution acts.

Common polar solvents like water and ethanol are not aprotic, and common aprotic solvents like hexane and diethyl ether are not polar. Polar aprotic solvents can dissolve salts of Brønsted bases that would react with protic solvents.
