Plot
[change | change source]In a Miami hotel, insurance agent Andy Hammon takes a diamond necklace from jewelry fence Tony Lacava at gunpoint. Later, while working at a garage, Hammon meets Paula Booth, the daughter of the garage owner. After making an offensive comment to her, he is fired. He steals Paula's car and later approaches her, claiming to be a criminal. He shows her the necklace and asks her to join him. Paula tells her father about the meeting.
Department of Justice official Ford Pierce shows Hammon Lacava's body and tells him that Paula, her father Paul, and their partner Eddie are being investigated because of Paul's unexplained wealth. Eddie sees Hammon as a threat to a planned $3 million deal and wants him killed. Hammon is attacked by the men who killed Lacava, but they leave when Paula arrives. He then tells Paula that he is actually an insurance investigator from Chicago and knows about an upcoming jewelry shipment.
After a jewelry store is robbed in Chicago, Hammon follows Paula to a meeting with Eddie and the robbers. He follows them to Nassau, where he offers Paula and her contact Brinker $500,000 for the stolen jewels. Hammon learns that the gems are being recut and sold as new jewelry. His men later rob Brinker of the jewels, allowing Hammon's company to claim the insurance money.
Hammon's employers tell him to get Paula to sign a statement confirming that the recut gems are the stolen ones. He offers Paula $600,000 and immunity from prosecution, and she agrees. However, when they go to recover the jewels, Eddie takes them. Police chase Eddie while Hammon and Paula watch.
