Cairo Governorate (Arabic: محافظة القاهرة) is a governorate of Egypt. The capital of the governorate, the city of Cairo, is also the capital city of Egypt. The governorate also includes the New Capital, which became the official seat of government in April 2024.[2]
Municipal divisions
[change | change source]The governorate is divided into the city of Cairo (Arabic: القاهرة) and the desert countryside (Arabic: الظهير الصحراوي, romanized: Al-Zahir Al-Sahrawi, lit. 'the desert hinterland').
The city of Cairo is divided into four areas (manatiq), each headed by a deputy governor. The areas are further divided into 38 districts (ahyaa, sing. hayy), each of which with governor-appointed heads.[3]
The Northern Area is divided into 9 districts:
Shubra, Al-Zawiya al-Hamra, Hadayek al-Kobba, Rod al-Farg, al-Sharabiya, al-Sahel, al-Zaytoun, Al-Amiriya, and al-Waili.
The Eastern Area is divided into 9 districts:
Heliopolis, Al-Nozha, Nasr City East, Nasr City West, al-Salam Awwal, al-Salam Thani, al-Matariya, and al-Marg, also including New Cairo, Al-Shorouk, Badr, and The New Capital.
The Western Area is divided into 9 districts:
Manshiyat Nasser, Al-Wayli, Wasat al-Qahira/Central Cairo (Al-Darb al-Ahmar, al-Gamaliyya, al-Hussein), Boulaq, Gharb El-Qahira/Western Cairo (Zamalek, Garden City, Downtown Cairo), Abdeen, Azbakeya, al-Muski, and Bab El-Shaaria.
The Southern Area is divided into 12 districts:
Old Cairo, al-Khalifa, al-Moqattam, al-Basatin, Dar El-Salam, El-Sayeda Zeinab, al-Tebbin, Helwan, al-Masara, Maadi, Tora, and 15th of May City.
There are six satellite cities under the rule of the New Urban Communities Authority, controlling planning, land sales and zoning, while governorate departments control public services like health and food.[4] The more populated cities are divided into districts, while less populated and developed cities do not have representation in the governorate.
