Abstract: A project is underway to increase the effective use of personnel by creating a knowledg... more Abstract: A project is underway to increase the effective use of personnel by creating a knowledge-based assistant for supervisors. The Programmed Evaluation of Personnel (PEOPL) is designed to permit the combination of quantitative and qualitative data to standardize supervisory ratings. The full scope of the project will combine subjective experience with data from psychological research which assesses employee performance. Peopl combines heuristic, subjective experience with experimental data to establish performance standards for use in a comprehensive system for personnel use. In this way, organizations can assess corporate needs, evaluate the current pool of employees, place them where they may be used more efficiently, and determine what jobs remain undone.

The rule-based development tool INSIGHT 2+ was used to implement this expert system on an AT-compatible microcomputer. User-specific information, such as graphics, mathematics, and report generation requirements, is gathered through a series of questions. Then rules are used to evaluate the appropriateness of each language. Upon completion of evaluation, the user may expand on any of the selected languages. We will discuss design and development ideas, as well as important capabilities of INSIGHT 2+ that were identified during this project.

The research reported is aimed at establishing a quantitative approach to assisting managers in identifying these risks. Results of empirical studies and new automated tools are discussed. The risks included: developing an application that fails to represent the expert's knowledge; failure to produce a usable system; upsetting people and groups within the organization who may feel threatened by the planned ES application; and exposing themselves or the organization to legal liability claims resulting from a malfunction of an ES application

Although several applications of independent component analysis (ICA) reported in the literature ... more Although several applications of independent component analysis (ICA) reported in the literature are related to physics, none have focused on the analysis of data typical of energy spectrum measurements. The present work has identified promising opportunities for future exploration in this area. Preliminary results are reported for some particular applications including one that improves the analysis of angular distribution spectra from nuclear reactions and one that is effective for the analysis of resonance data.
To diagnose AIDS patients, doctors are starting to use the methodology of amplification induced b... more To diagnose AIDS patients, doctors are starting to use the methodology of amplification induced by thermal annealing and by adding specific primers to imitate the polymerase chain reaction of the denatured DNA mutated by several types of human immunodeficiency viruses. An adaptive resonance theory (ART) neural network working in concert with an artificial intelligence (AI) rule-based system is shown to be efficient for enhancing the choice of the needed good primers. Because of the tradeoff between the simplicity of primers and the specifics of primers, doctors prefer to diagnose different viral types by administering patients with different sets of good primers. Thus, AI provides ART with both the background for self-organization and the foreground for the final goal
