Which feels weird to say, I have to admit, because plot/narrative-wise, the film is a damn mess.

BUT

The film rides on Tom Hardy's two performances, and those performances were great. Like a lot of other people and reviewers said, there were long stretches where I forgot that it was Tom Hardy playing both roles, because his portrayals of Reggie and Ronnie were so distinct. Reggie's leading man swagger and smooth charm contrasted marvellously with Ronnie's dead-eyed menace - although Ron has a very odd, awkward charm all to himself. There's a great scene - after Reggie is packed off to prison, and Ron is the only man in charge of their club/casino - where Ron jokes and banters with Teddy, before getting up on stage to insult and berate his casino clientele (and subject them to his awful trumpet playing and laughably bad stand-up). It's brilliant and hilarious, and endeared Ron to me (even though he's an objectively horrible person, as is Reggie).

Also! Speaking of hilarious, the film was very, very funny, which I hadn't expected. There was the borderline slapstick of the twins' slapfight (just as magnificent as I was hoping it would be), and a huge amount of dark humour arising from jokes about violence, torture, death, and other terrible things, and/or comedy juxtaposed with said terrible things. The humour was a great compliment to the nastiness of the twins' gangster lifestyle.

Everything speeds along at a rather fast pace, which is arguably necessary, since the film covers a rather long time frame. That being said, I would argue that there are other movies - other gangster movies, even - which cover even longer time frames, and don't need that breakneck pace or so much voiceover narration. Anyway, I digress. As the movie went on, I felt that the story started to suffer because it was speeding along so quickly. There were a lot of events (particularly in the last third of the film) that could have, and should have, had more emotional resonance, but didn't because things moved along so quickly. I actually grew slightly frustrated toward the end, because I wanted the film to go deeper into things, to slow down and explore something - anything! If I had to pick, I would've wanted a greater exploration of the twins' relationship, to see why Reggie was so loyal to Ronnie (and vice versa). The film didn't really cover it with sufficient depth, beyond 'they're twins' and Reggie saying he's been taking care of Ronnie for a long time. There were the neat soundbites we got from the trailers (e.g. "I can't do that, he's my brother," and "My loyalty to my brother is how I measure myself"), but things didn't get very much into the why of things.

There was a good (if somewhat heavy handed) scene in the last third of the movie, following Ron's murder of George Cornell, in which it's made very clear that Ron is Mama Kray's favourite. She dotes on him, seemingly anticipates his wants and needs before he voices them, then... belatedly, off-handedly offers the same to Reg. Then, to top it off, she tells him that "whatever Ron did, you have to forgive him". And Reg does, looking (and sounding) tired and resigned and browbeaten. I wanted more of that. Not necessarily family moments, but a closer examinationof things. Less speed, more depth, captain!

The third act of the movie is also structured rather oddly, and, as I said before, lacked that emotional resonance it really should've had. Rather than being utterly devastating and shattering, the events of the third act left me thinking, 'ah, yes, the movie is going to end soon'.

(Also, I'm just going to say here: that rape scene was completely unnecessary and added nothing to the story. The filmmakers already set Reggie up as being controlling and emotionally/verbally abusive. But apparently that wasn't enough! He had to rape her, too, to fill the abusive husband bingo card. Yergh. But, okay, fine, let's say, hypothetically speaking, it just had to be included. If it really did have to be included, they undermined its impact by totally glossing over it for the rest of the film!)

Perhaps it's because I've read the book, so I'm seeing things with a sense of 'what could've been' rather than judging the movie as is. But, when reading the book, the central conflict was made very clear. The film needed that sort of clarity. There's a crippling co-dependency in the twins' relationship, in the book: Reggie, having structured his identity around being Ronnie's carer and protector, can never completely extricate himself from that relationship, and Ronnie, having this need to be first in Reggie's list of priorities, no matter what, can't do it either. And while there were definitely flashes of that in the film, the central, largely psychological conflict between the twins was slow to unfold, and was muddied by a lot of side events (some of which could've been cut, in my opinion).

I know this is all seems like one part praise, two parts criticism, but I genuinely liked the movie. I liked it a lot, even with those deep flaws, because Tom Hardy was seriously that amazing in it. And I'd watch it again, if only to savour the things I really enjoyed - namely Tom Hardy's amazing performance(s), and the darkly funny humour - and to further indulge my fondness for crime movies.

Other things I enjoyed:

Frank and Frances' sibling relationship - we didn't see a lot of it, but it was a good mirror/foil to Reg and Ron's relationship; both Frank and Reg are protective of their mentally ill siblings, but Frank is able to care for Frances without being subsumed by her or growing resentful. Similarly, Frances accepts being cared for without lashing out or demanding Frank's undivided attention/manipulating Frank for more.

Teddy's apparent little crush on Reg (his "She's right, you do look really lovely," to Reg was funny and sweet, and the subsequent hurt on his face when Reg basically called him useless gave him a touch more depth beyond 'Ron's nutter boy toy')

Emily Browning's performance as Frances. It's not as immediately compelling as Tom Hardy's, but she did well with what the script gave her, yo.

https://sibilantly.livejournal.com/7557.html?view=comments#comments
off the cuff review","legend
The day was unseasonably warm (25 degrees Celsius in winter!), and I went out to yum cha with friends. I can’t remember…) that says we’re drawn to certain characters - for RP, for POV characters in fic - because something about them resonates with us. Be it life circumstances, outlook on life, some aspect of personality… there’s always something.

So my question is this: when writing your characters (fanfic or RP based on established characters only), how much of you goes into the characters?

And as a follow up question: why do you write from that character’s POV / roleplay that particular character?

In my list:

1) Tom Hansen
It’s funny writing/RP’ing Tom because, for so much of (500) Days, he’s an unremitting arse. A charming one, but an arse nevertheless. And, unlike Tommy Conlon or John Blake, Tom’s faults don’t arise from adverse circumstances. Tom’s faults - namely, his self-absorption - arise from privilege.

I also think most of you know I’m a WOC (if you didn’t, you do now! :D). I can’t identify with Tom’s privilege, although I can see it. But what I can identify with are his other flaws. So when I write him/RP him, I actually lend him my worst faults, but only the ones he demonstrates in canon: the neurosis, the self-doubt, the insecurity (when it comes to his possessive jealousy, I kind of have to reach further back, to a younger Sib XD).

Basically, I enjoy writing him and I instantly gravitated toward him because of his faults. I wanted the challenge of writing a character with such flaws - I wanted to see if I could portray him sympathetically, without glossing over his flaws (although, of course, most good stories requires character development*, so the Tom I started with is not the Tom I have at the end of PfP).

2) John Blake
Things get a little harder when it comes to John, but not too much. I’m not a former street kid, I’m not a cop, and I’m definitely not an orphan. But I do youth work, and I understand keenly John’s outrage when it comes to social injustices.

And I like writing from John’s POV for two reasons: firstly, he’s the everyman of the Batman world. In a world of superheroes and supervillains, he’s just… normal John. He doesn’t have powers, he doesn’t have oodles of money or tech. He has a very tragic backstory, it’s true, but it’s still a very normal one (compared to, say, Talia’s or Bane’s).

The second reason I like writing from John’s POV (rather than Bane’s or Bruce Wayne’s, for example), is that I like pitting John’s idealism against the harshness of his past and his current life, and - in doing so - explore how he’s both Bruce Wayne’s mirror and the 'path not taken'.

John is almost Bruce - orphaned at a young age, alienated from people, angry at the world. But he didn’t go the same path as Bruce. Whereas Bruce chose the path of vigilantism from the get-go, John chose the path of lawfulness. Yeah, in the end it’s implied that he became a vigilante (Bruce’s mirror again), but the interesting part, for me, are those years where he didn’t.

3) Eames
Until I started writing Inception fic, I was kind of worried that I only wrote Tom Hansen and John Blake because I like JGL.

But when I started writing Inception fic, the voice that I instantly fell into was… Eames’. This one took a lot of thinking about, because… hell, why Eames? I’m not British, I’m not old money (as it’s implied that he is). I’ve done some somewhat dodgy things in my youth (whoop whoop, south western Sydney!), but nothing to the extent of Eames’ criminal history. And I still think I understand Arthur much better than I understand Eames.

However, Arthur’s voice isn’t one that I’m wholly comfortable with. Arthur’s voice is blunt, direct, no-nonsense. Eames’ voice, on the other hand, is wordy - he meanders, muses, explores. And I’m much more comfortable with that (can you tell? XD).

(For example, Eames’ marvellous: "You see, right there you have various political motivations and anti-monopolistic sentiments, and so forth, but all of that stuff it’s eh… it’s really at the mercy of your subject’s prejudices," probably would’ve been condensed by Arthur into: "We need to target the relationship with the father. All the other options are too subjective.")

A second thing, which I hadn't considered until bauble discussed how Arthur's voice is more familiar to her, is that while I’m not British, I am Australian, and I’ve grown up around British ex-pats all my life. To a certain extent, Eames’ cadence of speech and some turns of phrase come much more naturally to me than Arthur’s American-isms.

—
* A caveat: there are also good stories where characters don’t change - or refuse to change - and that lack of change is the point (for example, Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman).
https://sibilantly.livejournal.com/5305.html?view=comments#comments
inception thoughts and meta","writing","writing is hard
Have you ever posted something that you thought was pretty reasoned and reasonable, and then had people miss a good chunk of your point(s)?

I posted a bit of... uh, I wouldn't really call it meta... more like brain spew... in reaction to a storm of JGL discussion on tumblr. That’s still in the works. But a tumblr anon requested that I discuss the caregiver aspect of Arthur’s characterisation a little more (for greater context, see this gif set), so I shall.
--

Inception is an interesting fandom to be in. At its heart, it’s a fandom of possibility. The PASIV creates endless opportunities for AUs. With the exception of Cobb, no character has an explicitly outlined origin story, so fans get to run amok with head canons (and even Cobb doesn’t have that much back story). And the broad characterisations, with their heavy reliance on archetypes, give us a myriad of character interpretations.

But when it comes to Arthur (Arthur, Arthur, Arthur, my love), these interpretations tend to... uh... cluster. ‘Cold’, ‘impassive’, ‘severe’ and ‘condescending’ are descriptors that come to mind. And, to be fair, Arthur certainly exhibits some of these traits – severity, in particular. But it could be argued – and I have argued – that these aren’t his prevailing traits (see: this rant). However, this meta is not about that. This bit of meta is all aboutArthur in the context of Jung's Caregiver archetype.

On the surface, it may seem a bit odd to ascribe the Caregiver archetype to Arthur. This archetype is also known as the Saint, the Altruist, the Nurturer, and – for better or worse – it’s generally viewed as a female archetype. Inherent sexism of that aside, ‘saintly’, ‘altruistic’ and ‘nurturing’ aren’t really the first descriptors that come to mind when you think of Arthur either. He’s a criminal; his morality system can probably be described as amoral, at best, and even when he’s giving comfort, Arthur isn’t exactly nurturing.

However!

The Caregiver is also known as the Helper, the Supporter, and the Protector. And those traits? Helpfulness, supportiveness and protectiveness? Arthur has those traits in spades.

“Cobb is the artist and Arthur is the producer. He’s the one saying, ‘Okay, you have your vision; now I’m going to figure out how to make all the nuts and bolts work so you can do your thing.’” - Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Word of God says that Arthur is Cobb’s right hand man, his second in command. There’s no back story for why. But even if we didn’t have Word of God, it’s abundantly clear from their interactions that Arthur is Cobb’s support.

When Cobb apparently blows the pitch with Saito, Arthur is ready to jump in. When Saito makes his offer to Cobb, Arthur voices his objections, but ultimately defers to Cobb’s judgement and goes with him. And, in the scene that stokes the ire of many fans, when Cobb tears Arthur a new one for missing Fischer’s militarisation, Arthur doesn’t even try to defend himself or deflect blame. He takes all of Cobb’s ranting, tries to calm him down, and then he tries to come up with ways to fix it. There are countless other scenes, but I won’t go through them all. We’ve all seen the movie, and Arthur being Cobb’s support isn’t really under contention. I think it’s suffice to say that Arthur’s behaviour when it comes to Cobb is absolutely supportive and helpful, even when he’s frustrated and furious with Cobb.

“The Caregiver has a core desire to protect and care for others.”

Arthur’s role as point man dovetails neatly with this central trait of the Caregiver. The dictionary definition of a point man is:

1. A soldier who is assigned to a position some distance ahead of a patrol as a lookout.
2. A man who has a crucial, often hazardous role in the forefront of an enterprise.

And ‘to take point’ is to:

“assume the first and most exposed position ... that is, the leading soldier advancing through hostile or unsecured territory ... in the commission of crime, usually a robbery, a ‘point man’ is a lookout.”

Arthur is the lookout, the guardian. He watches out for signs of trouble and he intervenes – he takes on risk – to protect the team. The most obvious example of this is, of course, the hotel dream level, where Arthur protects the team from Fischer’s subconscious security.

However, we also see Arthur’s protectiveness in play on the first level, where Arthur provides cover fire for the team as they try to figure out what the hell they’re going to do. We see it when he checks on everyone following the train-through-downtown-L.A debacle. And, if you’ve read The Cobol Job prequel (if you haven’t, you can read it/download it here), we also see it in Arthur watching over Cobb and preventing him from being flattened by a bus, and, later on, taking on a SWAT team on his own (in a dream, of course).

It could be argued that Arthur’s protectiveness is just a part of his job; that it stems from his desire to see the job(s) go well. But this argument holds a little less weight when you consider things like this:

and

and

AND, OKAY, THIS LAST GIF IS UNNECESSARY, BUT THE FEELS I HAVE ABOUT IT CAN ONLY BE EXPRESSED IN CAPSLOCK, AND I WANT PEOPLE TO LOOK AT IT AND CAPSLOCK WITH ME

*ahem*

Arthur didn’t have to do these things. He could have just stood by while Ariadne freaked out (...like Cobb did). He could have gotten the fuck out of the van as quickly as possible, like Yusuf and Eames did. But he didn’t. He immediately went to Ariadne’s side to reassure her that she was okay (albeit, in a not very nurturing manner). He hung back to make sure Ariadne knew how to work the oxygen mask. And his expression when Cobb doesn’t wake? Oh God.

(Seriously, JGL. Well done.)

Yes, they’re small things. Yes, they’re things that good human beings should probably just do. But this isn’t about whether Arthur is a good human being or not. This is about Arthur’s protective drive, and positing an explanation for it beyond ‘he wants the job to go well’ (although I’m still going to point out that in the spectrum of dodgy criminal behaviour in Inception, Arthur still turns up as one of the rosier criminals *fangirls shamelessly*).

“The Caregiver has a tendency to be unable to say no to others.”

Like I said, there’s no back story on why Arthur follows Cobb around the world. But we see his inability to say ‘no’ to Cobb when Saito makes his offer. Arthur has understandable reservations and doubts. But once Cobb decides he’s going to go ahead with it? There’s Arthur, sitting in Saito’s private jet, going along with it. Making angry salad faces, but nevertheless there and going along with it.

(Just putting that in because it’s never not gonna be hilarious)

“They take a risk in their pursuit to help others, and can end up getting harmed themselves, whether this comes in the form of burnout, being too much of a doormat, or being exploited.”

In the course of helping Cobb, Arthur ends up on the run, hunted by Cobol, gets shot in the knee (yes, in the dream, but pain is in the mind!), and in danger of being dropped into Limbo. Cobb seems to spend the coin of Arthur’s loyalty ruthlessly, tunnel visioned as he is by grief and his desire to return home.

Some fans have theorised that Arthur is so burned out by chasing after Cobb, making sure that he doesn’t end up dying, that he misses Fischer’s militarisation entirely. It’s a fair enough interpretation; there’s nothing that could really counter that. And it fits with the negative/shadow aspect of the Caregiver archetype taking on risk and harm in the course of protecting/helping others. However, for an alternative explanation on why Arthur missed Fischer’s militarisation, see zanzando’s meta on Arthur’s job and how he does all his research – it’s awesome.

Now, forgive me this brief digression, as I dip into my other favourite fandom pastime: observing fandom and fandom trends. It’s still relatively on point, I believe.

There was a period in Inception fandom that I like to call the ‘woobie!Arthur’ period (and I’m pretty sure others have called it woobie!Arthur, too). This period was characterised by a huge spike in hurt/comfort prompts on the kink meme, with Arthur being the recipient of the hurt an overwhelming majority of the time.

Part of it probably had to do with the way <s>JGL</s> Arthur screamed when he was shot in the knee (“He’s so pretty when he screams,” someone once commented in campfire chat). But another part of it, in my opinion, lies in how fans identify with Arthur. Three years later, people still get mad when they watch the scene where Cobb verbally lays into Arthur. And Arthur just takes it.

There’s no inherently satisfying resolution in that kind of conflict. No one tears into Cobb in return (well, Eames does, a bit). And so the fix-it prompts came rolling in, where someone – usually Eames – takes care of Arthur (for a change, seems to be the implication). I think that this shows, to some extent, that people do (or did) recognise the caregiver aspect to Arthur’s character. More specifically, they recognise that caregiver potential for burn out, which lends itself well to the hurt/comfort trope. But, in my opinion, Arthur embodies more than just the negative/shadow aspects of the Caregiver archetype. He embodies the positive aspects of the archetype, too.

So! In conclusion: Arthur is not nurturing, true. He seems to have a problem saying no to Cobb (whether this inability to say no is Cobb-specific or happens in general is up for debate). But he is nevertheless a helpful, supportive, protective bad ass in a suit, and that is totally in line with the Caregiver archetype.
https://sibilantly.livejournal.com/4131.html?view=comments#comments
inception thoughts and meta","character: arthur","retro journaling challenge
So much for posting more often.

In my defense, I wrote a lot of replies to the fanon!Eames (and fanon!Arthur) post. And that's... just not the sense I get from the movie? They're both criminals, yes, but Eames is a con man. I get a really strong sense of self-preservation from him (arguably to the point of selfishness), as well as a certain level of... distance in quite a few of his interactions with the team.

I mean, this is the guy who wanted to sit out the rest of the job on the first level, fuck the rest of the team. I'm just questioning whether being genuinely warm and friendly is Eames' default state of being, especially given the fact that he makes a living as a con man and forger, and wondering where the basis for that assumption/characterisation comes from.

So... thoughts, anyone?

--
* As an aside: This sort of ties into my everlasting confusion over cold-and-bitchy!Arthur who rejects Eames at every turn, even when Eames is being truly, openly affectionate towards him. I think part of it has to do with the fact people have conflated Arthur's role as point man (detail-oriented; nitpicking to ensure plans are watertight) with his actual personality. It goes some way toward explaining characterisations where Arthur has these ridiculously high standards for things like fashion, food, and skin care. But it... doesn't really explain why he'd shoot Eames down if Eames is being honestly affectionate. Arthur is many negative things, but being crap with people is not really one of them, IMO. Of course, as always, people's mileage may vary.

Edited to add: Admittedly, this sort of stuff does kind of go out the window when it comes to AUs since they're... well, not usually criminals, and their backgrounds can obviously influence their personalities in wildly different ways.

--

Bridget Jones-esque Day Summary (even though it's only noon here):
Writing count: 4 pages (A4, longhand)
Cigarette count: 1 (but... it's only noon)
Cups of coffee: 1
Cups of tea: 0 (we're all out, oh God, we're all out, WHO LET THIS HAPPEN? It makes me want to be contrary and reactionary and write always-a-bottom!Eames fic, even though, in my head canon, Arthur and Eames switch regularly (lbh, these statements are totally coming from Arthur/Eames fans who see the Arthur/Eames relationship dynamic in a certain way).

*siiiiiiiigh*

I don't want to harsh on anyone's kinks or anything - if people like <s>Arthur</s> JGL's character incarnations to always be a bottom, that's fine.
