5 Classroom Library Tweaks

For a classroom library to be effective it must be treated as if it is a living organism. A library that doesn’t evolve with your students probably isn’t going to be very effective for very long. My classroom library has changed a ton the first 100 days of the school year (We haven’t actually had 100 days of school, I just like that nice round number). In the video below I share 5 ways in which the library has changed based on the needs of my readers.

This week’s episode of One Question with Mr. Sharp featured the amazing Michigan educator/author Trevor Muir. Trevor is a project based learning enthusiast. A few weeks ago, I went into my classroom on a Saturday morning to record an episode of the Teach, Me Teacher podcast with Jacob Chastain. I really enjoyed chatting with Jacob about the importance of educators sharing their stories. I hope that the episode brings people value. Even if you decide you don’t want to listen to me on the show, you should probably check out the podcast. Jacob is doing really great work.

Graph Novel Tips From Victoria Jamieson

I was extremely lucky to sit down with Victoria Jamieson at NCTE in St. Louis back in November. After recording audio for an episode of The Yarn podcast, we turned on the video camera and I asked her if she had any tips for kids that want to create comics. Her response was amazing! We watched it in class, and so many of my students picked up a pencil and started making comics. It was magical. I hope you find value in the video (below).

It’s A Wonderful Sweater! | Interview

I absolutely love teaching in my hometown. LOVE IT. A lot of kids that grow up in Jackson County are under the impression that Jackson is a place that is forced to live in, and the goal in life should be to get out as fast as you can. While I have respect for view, it is pretty much the opposite of how I have always felt. Jackson is filled with some pretty amazing people, and I feel blessed to call it my home.

Nicholas Rush runs The Resale Depot. It is a resale store ran by a local church. They divide the profits up and donate the to various ministries. Mr. Rush is working on changing the perception of Jackson by highlighting local community members in his series: It’s A Wonderful Sweater. Each episode features a Jacksonian talking about what they do, and why they love the city.
