Ayman Wahba is a Professor at the CSE department, Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University. He got his B.Sc. and M.Sc. Degrees in Electrical Engineering from the same university in 1988 and 1991 respectively. He then moved to France where he got his DEA (Diplôme d’Études Approfondies) degree from the INPG (Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble) in 1993, and then he got his Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering from the TIMA laboratory, Joseph Fourier University in 1997. His research interests include High Performance Digital IC Design and Test, Formal Verification Techniques, Diagnosis of Design Errors, High Level Synthesis, Design and Test of Computers, and Embedded Systems.

The system currently accepts SMAX[4] and VHDL, and provides equivalence checking, model checking, theorem proving, and automatic diagnosis of simple design errors. After an overview of the system, we discuss the salient features of the common intermediate format, of the diagnosis tools, and of the automatic generation of NQTHM[11] models from VHDL functional descriptions.

Cascade of Complementary Features for Fast and Accurate Pedestrian Detection

We propose a cascade of two complementary features to detect pedestrians from static images quick... more We propose a cascade of two complementary features to detect pedestrians from static images quickly and accurately. Co-occurrence Histograms of Oriented Gradients (CoHOG) descriptors have a strong classification capability but are extremely high dimensional. On the other hand, Haar-like features are computationally efficient but not highly discriminative for extremely varying texture and shape information such as pedestrians with different clothing and stances. Therefore, the combination of both features enables fast and accurate pedestrian detection. Our framework comprises a cascade of Haar based weak classifiers followed by a CoHOG-SVM classifier. The experimental results on the DaimlerChrysler and INRIA benchmark datasets show that we can reach very close accuracy to the most accurate CoHOG-only classifier but in less than 1/200 of its computational cost. Additionally, we show that by integrating two of our proposed cascades: one full body with another upper body detectors, we can reach higher accuracy than the standalone full body CoHOG-only in about 1/100 of its computational cost.

The quality of water is the main factor in determining the success of aquaponics. This quality can be determined through measuring various water parameters; most importantly are the dissolved oxygen, water temperature and the level of acidity. Taking advantage of the advancements in Internet of Things (IoT), embedded systems and cloud computing has eased the task of evaluating the water quality by deploying various sensors and actuators around the aquaponics platform. The parameters are constantly monitored and kept under control. The system proposed is based on Modbus TCP communication protocol which is widely used as a standard within industrial applications. The use of Modbus and IoT technology has permitted the development a smart aquaponics system for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

In recent times, most hospitals in the world are crowded and facing the problem of increasing num... more In recent times, most hospitals in the world are crowded and facing the problem of increasing numbers of patients, specifically with the spread of infectious viruses such as Covid-19 and other chronic diseases such as cardiac disease and Geriatrics diseases, therefore patients need continuous and accurate emergency care. The heart rhythm disturbances, unsaturated oxygen in the blood, and high-temperature may be a high risk to the life of the patient. Most hospitals and medical quarantines have a shortage of Intensive care units (ICU) rooms. This paper discusses the design and improvement of the Patient monitor device for converting it to a handheld device to be small in size (L145 x W85 x D45 mm), lite Wight (398 gm.), low-cost nearly (98USD), easy-to-use by touch screen, and secure connections to internet with (SSL) protocol[22]. The maximum errors of ECG HR is 1.408% , and SPO2 is 1.075% ,SPO2 HR is 1.408% , temperature is 0.549%, BP systolic is 2.439% , BP Diastolic is 3.448%,The patient can use the device anywhere by himself, in an easy way and safely. This device measures physiological parameters such as (blood pressure by using (MAP) method, the saturation of oxygen in the blood (SPO2) by photoplethysmograph (PPG), the electrical and muscle movement of the heart through 3Lead (ECG), temperature, and finally, Heartbeat rate by different three ways). All data are monitoring on Smart Touch TFT, and storing the Main information of patient for more than thirty days Continuously on SD. Also using (IoT) technology to transfer all patient information in real-time through ESP8266 to Android or Website to follow-up the patient directly and permanently by Doctor or Caretaker, The device gives some important Speech voice sentences and sound alerts to improve the health of the patient. to design and implement the system with low cost, we are using the traditional lowcost sensors, with changing the large bulker analog circuits to intelligent signal conditioning by using (CMRR) with Sallen-Key Active filter and low-cost successive approximation 12-bit ADC MCP3208, with DAC MCP4728 and improving the efficiency by DSP software Specifically FIR and Moving Average Filter. This paper not using any Platforms under (RTOS), but using embedded BASIC language with the wide-range microcontroller PIC18f46k22, to keep the program in small size of memory and low power consumption

Since exhaustive testing is not feasible, Modified Condition/Decision Coverage (MC/DC) has been introduced as an effective structural coverage alternative. However, studies have shown that complementing the test cases satisfying MC/DC to also satisfy Boundary Value Analysis (BVA) increases the bug finding rate. Hence, the industry adopted its testing processes to accommodate both. Satisfying these coverage requirements manually is very expensive and as a result many efforts were put to automate this task. Genetic algorithms (GA) have shown their effectiveness so far in this area. We propose an approach employing GA techniques and targeting hybrid coverage criteria to increase BVA in addition to MC/DC.

Using don't cares from the computed reachable states, we introduce flexibility in choosing the transition relation, which can be used to minimize its Binary Decision Diagram (BDD). This can reduce the time-consuming image computation step. The technique is implemented and integrated in our equivalence checking system M-CHECK and its efficiency is shown on the ISCAS-89 benchmark circuits.

In this paper, we examine how to exploit GPU parallelism to accelerate the single Gaussian background subtraction algorithm achieving real-time processing of multiple concurrent videos. Experiments performed on a low end GPU showed promising results.

The targeted structural coverage criteria are usually based on the criticality of the application. Modified Condition/Decision Coverage (MC/DC) is a structural coverage criterion that was introduced to the industry by NASA. Also, MC/DC comes either highly recommended or mandated by multiple standards, including ISO 26262 from the automotive industry and DO-178C from the aviation industry due to its efficiency in bug finding while maintaining a compact test suite. However, due to its complexity, huge amount of resources are dedicated to fulfilling it. Hence, automation efforts were directed to generate test data that satisfy MC/DC. Genetic Algorithms (GA) in particular showed promising results in achieving high coverage percentages. Our results show that coverage levels could be further improved using a batch of enhancements applied on the GA search.

Consequently, the same App is developed several times; each time the developer uses the programming languages and development tools of a specific platform. Therefore, there is a need to have cross-platform mobile applications development solutions that enable the developers to develop the App once and run it everywhere. The Integrated Cross-Platform Mobile Applications Development (ICPMD) solution is one of the attempts that enables the developers to use the most popular programming languages like Java for Android and C# for Windows Phone 8 (WP8). ICPMD is used to transform both the source code and user interface to another language to generate full Apps on the target platform. This paper extends ICPMD by proposing a new code conversion approach based on XSLT and Regular Expressions to ease the conversion process. In addition, it provides the assessment method to compare the ICPMD efficiency with competing approaches. Several Apps are converted from WP8 to Android and vice versa. The ICPMD evaluation results show reasonable improvement over commercial cross-platform mobile development tools (Titanium and Xamarin).

Pin-Count and Wire Length Optimization for Electrowetting-on-Dielectric Chips: A Metaheuristics-Based Routing Algorithm

Electrowetting-on-dielectric chips are gaining momentum as efficient alternatives to conventional... more Electrowetting-on-dielectric chips are gaining momentum as efficient alternatives to conventional biochemical laboratories due to their flexibility and low power consumption. In this chapter, we present a novel two-stage metaheuristic algorithm to optimize electrode interconnect routing for pin-constrained chips. The first stage models channel routing as a traveling salesman problem and solves it using the ant colony optimization algorithm. The second stage provides detailed wire routes over a grid model. The algorithm is benchmarked over a set of real-life chip specifications. On average, comparing our results to previous work, we obtain reductions of approximately 39 % and 35 % on pin-count and total wire length, respectively.

Real time image and video processing is a demand in many computer vision applications, e.g. video... more Real time image and video processing is a demand in many computer vision applications, e.g. video surveillance, traffic management and medical imaging. The processing of those video applications requires high computational power. Thus, the optimal solution is the collaboration of CPU and hardware accelerators. In this paper, a Canny edge detection hardware accelerator is proposed. Edge detection is one of the basic building blocks of video and image processing applications. It is a common block in the pre-processing phase of image and video processing pipeline. Our presented approach targets offloading the Canny edge detection algorithm from processing system (PS) to programmable logic (PL) taking the advantage of High Level Synthesis (HLS) tool flow to accelerate the implementation on Zynq platform. The resulting implementation enables up to a 100x performance improvement through hardware acceleration. The CPU utilization drops down and the frame rate jumps to 60 fps of 1080p full HD input video stream.

There are many survey papers about the cross-platform mobile development solutions but they do not include the most recent approaches, including Component-Based approach, Cloud-Based approach, and Merged approach. The main aim of this paper is helping the researchers to know the most recent approaches and the open research issues. This paper surveys the existing crossplatform mobile development approaches and attempts to provide a global view: it thoroughly introduces a comprehensive categorization to the cross-platform approaches, defines the pros and cons of each approach, explains sample solutions per approach, compares the cross-platform mobile development solutions, and ends with the open research areas.

Three types of errors are c onsidered: extra, missing, and bad connection errors. Special test patterns are generated to rapidly locate the error. The algorithms are integrated within the Prevail TM system. Results on benchmarks show that the error is always located, within a time proportional to the product of the circuit size, and the number of used p atterns.

It helps confirming that a real live person is in front of the camera. Given the ubiquity of the high-resolution printers and phone/tablet displays, popular attacks usually involve face prints or video replay. Most existing solutions rely on texture and local shape analysis to detect printing artifacts and light reflections in input attack images. In this paper, we propose extracting three low-level descriptors from the input face image, followed by polynomial classification and score level fusion. We show through our experiments how the fusion of multiple features and scores produced higher classification accuracy compared to the existing individual feature systems. We report our results on three popular benchmark datasets.

This paper introduces a new technique for automatic column (parallel) parking of four-wheeled car... more This paper introduces a new technique for automatic column (parallel) parking of four-wheeled cars. The intended technique is divided into two main stages. The first stage is the generation of the optimal path trajectory that the car can follow so that it can be parked in a parking lot with the minimum acceptable dimensions, after the discovery of the parking place. This stage is supported with a full parking scenario which is suitable for practical implementation. The second stage is the path tracking problem, which is solved by the design of the intended fuzzy control system. The parameters of the fuzzy controller beside the required time for parking achievement all are tuned by the search algorithm artificial fish swarm algorithm (AFSA). The performance of the involved swarm-based fuzzy controller (SBFC) is measured for solving the path tracking problem while operating on the dynamic model of a car-like robot, so that a full practical technique for car's auto parking can be completely realised. The simulation results for the path tracking problem are emphasised at the end of the paper reflecting the success of the intended auto parking control system.

In addition, it provides the assessment method to compare the ICPMD efficiency with competing approaches. Several Apps are converted from WP8 to Android and vice versa. The ICPMD evaluation results show reasonable improvement over commercial cross-platform mobile development tools (Titanium and Xamarin).

In this chapter, we present a novel two-stage metaheuristic algorithm to optimize electrode interconnect routing for pin-constrained chips. The first stage models channel routing as a traveling salesman problem and solves it using the ant colony optimization algorithm. The second stage provides detailed wire routes over a grid model. The algorithm is benchmarked over a set of real-life chip specifications. On average, comparing our results to previous work, we obtain reductions of approximately 39 % and 35 % on pin-count and total wire length, respectively.

The processing of those video applications requires high computational power. Thus, the optimal solution is the collaboration of CPU and hardware accelerators. In this paper, a Canny edge detection hardware accelerator is proposed. Edge detection is one of the basic building blocks of video and image processing applications. It is a common block in the pre-processing phase of image and video processing pipeline. Our presented approach targets offloading the Canny edge detection algorithm from processing system (PS) to programmable logic (PL) taking the advantage of High Level Synthesis (HLS) tool flow to accelerate the implementation on Zynq platform. The resulting implementation enables up to a 100x performance improvement through hardware acceleration. The CPU utilization drops down and the frame rate jumps to 60 fps of 1080p full HD input video stream.

It helps confirming that a real live person is in front of the camera. Given the ubiquity of the high-resolution printers and phone/tablet displays, popular attacks usually involve face prints or video replay. Most existing solutions rely on texture and local shape analysis to detect printing artifacts and light reflections in input attack images. In this paper, we propose extracting three low-level descriptors from the input face image, followed by polynomial classification and score level fusion. We show through our experiments how the fusion of multiple features and scores produced higher classification accuracy compared to the existing individual feature systems. We report our results on three popular benchmark datasets.

The intended technique is divided into two main stages. The first stage is the generation of the optimal path trajectory that the car can follow so that it can be parked in a parking lot with the minimum acceptable dimensions, after the discovery of the parking place. This stage is supported with a full parking scenario which is suitable for practical implementation. The second stage is the path tracking problem, which is solved by the design of the intended fuzzy control system. The parameters of the fuzzy controller beside the required time for parking achievement all are tuned by the search algorithm artificial fish swarm algorithm (AFSA). The performance of the involved swarm-based fuzzy controller (SBFC) is measured for solving the path tracking problem while operating on the dynamic model of a car-like robot, so that a full practical technique for car's auto parking can be completely realised. The simulation results for the path tracking problem are emphasised at the end of the paper reflecting the success of the intended auto parking control system.
