Vasnetsov's Paintings in the St. Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev" by Olga Volgshtein, completed at Saratov State University in 2014, is devoted to a brilliant artist of the Russian Empire whose life and work exemplify the European nation-building phenomenon during the mid- and late 19th century. Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov, through his religious murals in the St. Vladimir Cathedral, played an axial role in shaping a national artistic identity in the contemporary Russian Empire. His work masterfully fused national-patriotic ideals with Byzantine and Western European influences, positioning him at the intersection of realism, romanticism and modernism, making him one of the first artists to work in the Russian Revival style. Vasnetsov's artistic vision captured not only the spiritual essence of Russian Orthodoxy but also mirrored the broader socio-political currents of Europe, as nations sought to forge cultural and historical identities. The thesis consists of an introduction, three main chapters, and a conclusion: Chapter 1 provides an in-depth examination of the Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev as a Neo-Byzantine architectural masterpiece, exploring the historical context of Russian architectural trends and the intricate process of constructing and decorating the cathedral. Russian Revival architecture, including the Neo-Byzantine style, emerged amidst a growing interest in national architectural traditions, characteristic of 19th-century Europe, and represented an interpretation and stylization of the architectural heritage of the Russian Empire. Chapter 2 delves into the life and career of V. M. Vasnetsov, focusing on his role in Russian artistic circles and his portrayal of Christ, which reflects the broader search for religious imagery in 19th-century Russian art. Chapter 3 offers a detailed analysis of Vasnetsov’s religious paintings as a unique artistic phenomenon of Folk Art Revival, highlighting the themes, stylistic techniques, and the contemporary reception of his murals in the St. Vladimir Cathedral. The conclusion summarizes Vasnetsov's profound impact on Russian religious painting, illustrating how his work stands as a creative synthesis of Russian Epos and Byzantine traditions, grounded in the Western artistic school. The research, supported by iconographic and archival analysis, is richly illustrated with photos, including Vasnetsov's sketches displayed in the Tretyakov Gallery. This thesis celebrates Vasnetsov as a pivotal figure in the cultural revival of the Russian Empire, whose contributions to religious and national art epitomize the pan-European movement toward nation-building in the 19th century.
