Professor Kazimierz Banasik , currently expert at Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW -PIB: https://www.imgw.pl/). Untill 2020 he was teaching and researching at Warsaw University of Life Sciences - SGGW (www.sggw.pl). He taught hydrology, erosion and sedimentation, and flood defences at the Department of Water Engineering in the Faculty for Civil and Environmental Engineering. He also served as a visiting Associate Professor at the Department of Agricultural Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (http://abe.illinois.edu/), USA.

Having obtained a Ph.D. in Hydrology and Sedimentation from Warsaw Agricultural University in 1983, he became a professor in 2002 and was Dean of his Faculty at Warsaw University of Life Sciences - SGGW between 2002 and 2008. Then he was the university coordinator for international research projects (2008-2016) and Vice Rector for Development (2016-2020).

He served as a Chairman of the Association of Polish Hydrologists SHP (2013-2019) and as Vice President of the International Commission on Continental Erosion of IAHS (2011-2019). He has been currently chairing the Committee of Environmental Engineering of Polish Academy of Sciences.

His research activity has dealt with hydrology of small catchments, sediment graph prediction and reservoir sedimentation. He has been the recipient of several research grants and fellowships. He has also received several honors and awards in recognition of his achievements including the Gold medal for long-term services for his country, Medal of the Commission of National Education and the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

Powódź i susza to dwa przeciwległe zjawiska, związane z nisz- czącym nadmiarem, bądź deficytem wo... more Powódź i susza to dwa przeciwległe zjawiska, związane z nisz- czącym nadmiarem, bądź deficytem wody, których nie da się całkowicie wyeliminować. Niezbędna jest jednak synergia działań podejmowanych w celu minimalizacji łącznego ryzyka powodzi i suszy, przy optymalizacji kosztów. Oddzielne traktowanie powo- dzi i suszy, np. w planowaniu, może prowadzić do rozwiązań, które ze sobą kolidują. Rozwiązanie służące redukcji ryzyka powodzi może nie być korzystne dla redukcji ryzyka suszy i odwrotnie. Na przykład, redukcji ryzyka powodzi służy tzw. retencja „sucha”, czyli obszary zielone przeznaczone do zatrzymania nadmiaru wody, np. poldery. Do redukcji ryzyka suszy pożądana jest natomiast retencja „mokra”, a więc zgromadzenie w sprzyjających temu lokalizacjach zasobów wody do wykorzystania w okresie niedo- boru. Często opcje retencji suchej i mokrej dotyczą tych samych lokalizacji, a więc tylko zintegrowane podejście może prowadzić do właściwych rozwiązań redukujących zagrożenie powodziami i suszami. Gospodarka na zbiorniku retencyjnym wymaga z jednej strony zachowania znacznej rezerwy powodziowej, a z drugiej – zmagazynowania większej objętości wody dla utrzymania prze- pływu minimalnego w rzece poniżej zbiornika na wypadek suszy.

Investigation carried out by the Department of Hydraulic Engineering of SGGW in Zagożdżonka River... more Investigation carried out by the Department of Hydraulic Engineering of SGGW in Zagożdżonka River have shown an intensive suspended sediment transport during the winter season, when occurring floods are caused by rainfall and snowmelt as well. The relation between rainfall/snowmelt -runoff - sediment transport have been investigated in small, agricultural catchment in central Poland. The hydrological and meteorological data collected in Zagożdżonka catchment during winter season have been used to calculate lag time of runoff (Lag) and lag time of sediment yield (Lags). Both, Lag and Lags are important characteristics of the instantaneous unit hydrograph (IUH) and instantaneous unit sedimentgraph (IUSG).These characteristics are interrelated. Field data from Zagożdżonka River catchment have been used to demonstrate the relationship between lag times.
