
Antonio Luiz V . Toscano de Brito
Dr. Toscano de Brito is Curator of the Orchid Research Center at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. His research involves molecular and taxonomic work of Neotropical orchids.
A native of Brazil, Dr. Toscano de Brito graduated from the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He received his Ph.D. on orchid systematics from the University of Reading/Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, in England. He is currently an Associate to Oakes Ames Orchid Herbarium, Harvard University Herbaria, and Courtesy Curator, Herbarium, Univerity of Florida.
Dr. Toscano de Brito has made numerous scientific expeditions throughout Brazil to complete plant collections and travelled extensively in Europe visiting herbaria and libraries. He has contributed or authored over 70 scientific publications, including two books on Brazilian orchids, and is a recipient of four international awards for excellence in plant research including a prestigious grant from the National Geographic Society. He has recently been awarded a grant from the Brazilian government which is critical to continue vital inventory, classification and conservation of some of the world’s most endangered habitats.
