The Alters is a highly atmospheric sci-fi character study of one man who meets the effects of the formative choices he’s made throughout his life face to face. Managing Jan’s relationships with his alternate selves while extracting enough resources from a hostile alien environment to survive is a balancing act on top of a balancing act, and it cleverly builds up the pressure over the course of its story. Exploration of these barren but eye-catching maps presents a series of puzzles and threats without resorting to blasting aliens, and the conversations and moral dilemmas that arise from Jan’s clones are a novel way to approach a game like this. It’s clearly not a big-budget game with resources to throw at cinematics and character models, but it does a lot with a little to tell its story effectively, and its occasional interface quirks don’t get in the way of that.

In order to operate the mobile base—and escape the planet—he must create alternate versions of himself. These “alters” come from lives he never lived, walking paths he never took. They are crucial for survival, but they may resent him, because some of them believe they lived better versions of his life.Is escape a selfish goal? Will you treat different Jan’s as mere resources—or as autonomous beings deserving of empathy? In The Alters, survival is personal.

10 months, 1 week - Jan Dolski was a simple worker until a certain space mission program tempted him to take the risk of a lifetime. Or rather, many lifetimes. When the mission goes awry, he and the players will soon discover that survival depends on creating alternate versions of Jan. These versions are identical in form, share some memories, but possess different skills and emotions. And in this fight for survival, the survival have never been more personal. Alters will be available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC on June 13, 2025.

His luck changes when he discovers Rapidium, a resource that, when paired with the Quantum Computer, lets him create Alters—alternate versions of himself based on changing the pivotal decisions from his past. The Alters aren’t just workers—they’re individuals with their own skills, emotions, and motivations. While essential for keeping the base functional, crafting tools, and mining resources, their distinct personalities can spark tension. Despite their differences, they share a common goal: survive, escape, and rely only on themselves.
