I watched "Once More With Feeling" today (SUCH A GOOD EPISODE) and got all fluttery watching the end kiss between Buffy and Spike as it slowly developed, the two of them pulled towards each other like they're unable to resist. Spike's face as it's happening is really great - Buffy looks determined, focused; Spike is disbelieving, and then the reality of it dawns on him and it turns to hunger. Mmmm.

ANYWAY. OMWF was the first episode of Buffy I ever watched, so even as non-invested in the characters as I was at that point, I still enjoyed that, and enjoy it even more now. Clearly.

What I'm wondering is: What was it like for people who'd actually been WATCHING the show before they saw it, though? People who actively wanted Buffy and Spike together? Regardless of whether you watched real-time or mainlined the show in a fannish binge, please share your excitement/disbelief/agony/joy as it happened! Regale me with your Buffy memories! Please?

I understand that the whole Buffy/Spike sex scene in "Smashed" is problematic. I GET THAT. But I feel like if it wasn't supposed to be at least SOMEWHAT appealing, they might've used TOTALLY DIFFERENT music. Because that little bit in 'Smashed' is still one of my favorite pieces of music on the show (and replicates really well the same sound of the Bush song from "Dead Things," which I ALSO really love). It's got a dark romanticism to it that is really kind of apt for what's going on there.

Also their faces are both kind of amazing in the sex part of the scene.

IDK, IDK, I can't help it, I still ship them! I like the general trajectory of their relationship, even if some of the specifics make me frown. And I hate feeling like I should be ashamed of liking their relationship because of all the many thousands of pages of meta that have been written about it.

(Though at least the beginning of "Wrecked" where they're in the house makes me SO UNCOMFORTABLE because Buffy is really unhappy and Spike is really...Spike. Heh.)

I watched a bit of the Buffy episode "After Life" today, specifically the first 15 minutes or so up until all the Scoobies storm into the house to find Buffy. I was bowled over again with how much I really really REALLY love the scene where Spike finds out Buffy is alive. Man. IT STILL GETS ME. His face is incredible. And the way he sort of touches her but not really as they're walking to the couch, knowing he needs to be gentle with her, but also probably not sure she'd even want him to touch her? My heart. And then they look up at each other together after he takes her hands. So good. My inner Buffy/Spike shipper is still there!

Now that I'm done with watching Persuaders! episodes for the first time, I can start re-watching! \o/ (I'M SORRY TO THE 99% OF YOU WHO DON'T CARE ABOUT THIS SHOW.)

I wanted to refresh myself on the pilot so I watched it with lunch today. Thoughts and lots of screencaps from the pilot, "Overture":

This is my third time watching it and I still really love it.Collapse )

What was the website that had transcripts of all the Buffy episodes? Did it list which episodes certain characters were in? What I'm really looking for here is a way to find out all the episodes that Joyce showed up in - I trust my flist can help me with that! Thanks, all!

And to provide something useful while I'm here, the decade in news photographs, courtesy of Boston.com. Warning for some potentially disturbing/triggery images, although they do hide most of those.

I have answered all my comments! I've got (a little) time to participate in LJ! And I have absolutely nothing to say! (That part isn't so weird, the first two are.) So, what the hell, I'll do that Top 5 Meme that was going around recently:

Ask me my fannish Top Five [Whatevers]. Any top fives, doesn't matter what, really! And I will answer them in a new post in comments!

Or, you can talk to me about how you interpret this quote by Buffy from "Restless": "I walk. I talk. I shop, I sneeze, I'm gonna be a fireman when the floods roll back. There's trees in the desert since you moved out, and I don't sleep on a bed of bones."

Because I used to be able to brain, but not anymore, and while I love the poetry of this quote, the back half of it makes less sense to me as it rolls along.

I am going to be even less available than normal this week because of work. If something urgent comes up, email me and I'll try to make sure I at least read email in the evenings. I miss you all!

In the meantime, please enjoy this extremely awesome Buffy picspam.

ALSO. Today is the birthday of two of the most fabulous people, well, ever. Happy birthday wishes to troyswann and heresluck. There is so much smart and awesome and amazingness between the two of you it is unreal. I'm so lucky to know you both. I adore you, so, SO much. I hope your days are wonderful.

ETA: Have the song I'm listening to: The Wanting Comes In Waves by The Decemberists. Should be an interesting album.

EATA: omg! I forgot to thank the anonymous e-gift Valentine bear giver! ♥ to you, too! Also, thank you to the folk who left comments for me on The Valentine Game, I really appreciate it. :)

annavtree gives us Buffy 'Fashion' Through the Ages, a hilarious picspam.

Disney is making a new hand-drawn movie set in New Orleans that I only just learned about a couple of days ago! I am very excited about this. The Princess and the Frog.

Seen via friendsfriends: if anything did happen to LJ and people were to scatter, it looks like GreatestJournal is no longer an option. Anyone know how long GJ has been down?

That's all I've got! Heh.

I got two things in the mail yesterday that made me grin. cee_m sent me a t-shirt with a giant silver \o/ on it. When I pulled it out of the box I threw back my head and laughed with glee. Awesome. And then renenet sent me lip-balm-on-a-string, which made me giggle. And then I saw who made it: Here!TV, otherwise known as the purveyors of such fine shows as Dante's Cove, and I died. That was a one-two punch of fabulous gifts, ladies, thank you so very much!

Speaking of fabulous gifts, I exchanged emails with fer1213 recently for my birthday and she says "hi" and that she misses y'all. :) She's doing well!

And speaking of Dante's Cove, we have an official date and time for the episode 2 chat: Thursday, September 20 at 7:00pm PST. You can still join in if you want, so drop me a line letting me know and I'll get you set up.

Yesterday evening I also watched "Smashed" and then again with Drew Greenberg's commentary for it as well. The music they use for that final scene is so gorgeous. I was really pleased when Drew mentioned how much he loved the music, too. He also talked about the final scene and how cut for spoilers!Collapse ) Heck of an episode to start your Buffy writer's career with. Heh. It's a shame they had to follow up with "Wrecked" and "Gone" but. That's ok.

Here, have some pic!spam! They're all so pretty!Collapse )

Via sweet_ali, in memory of September 11, 2001:

MSNBC, earlier today, was rerunning the news footage from that day. It was surreal to watch, knowing now how everything turned out after.

**********

In lighter news: Happy birthday to ascian3 who needs no good luck wishes because she's so naturally awesome. I truly hope you enjoy your day today; that is the greatest memorial.

audiography is doing a "Birth Year" challenge this week, where you talk about songs from the year you were born. I am finding it simultaneously hilarious and awful that people are posting songs from 1989. OMGWTF. How are people born in 1989 already 18? I remember 1989. Fairly well, even! Heh.

I watched "Once More, With Feeling" during lunch today and had three extremely strong responses to it.

The curtains close on a kiss, God knowsCollapse )

I'm all caught up on The Black Donnellys. Spoilers for 'Run Like Hell'Collapse )

If you're enjoying the TBD music, you should check out the page at TuneFind.com, which lists the songs used in the episodes. It doesn't say where they were used, which is really TuneFind's biggest drawback, but it did help me find the song I was looking for from this week's episode, "Hold Onto Me" by Ben Broussard. (He's got it up at his MySpace link there for free streaming.)

I've been clipping Farscape Season 2 for a vid and it reminds me YET AGAIN how very awesome that show is. And pretty. So, so pretty.

Finally, can we talk Buffy for a second? I'm curious, what do you think is being referred to when Buffy says "I'm gonna be a fireman when the floods roll back" in "Restless"? Via the Buffy Dialogue Database, here's some context to refresh your memory:

FIRST SLAYER via TARA: I have no speech. No name. I live in the action of death, the blood cry, the penetrating wound. I am destruction. Absolute ... alone.
BUFFY: I am not alone.
SLAYER via TARA: The Slayer does not walk in this world.
BUFFY: I walk. I talk. I shop, I sneeze. I'm gonna be a fireman when the floods roll back. There's trees in the desert since you moved out. And I don't sleep on a bed of bones. (firmly) Now give me back my friends.

I had wanted to do a big huge post but I ended up being gone most of the day out shopping and eating super-delicious fish tacos with brynnmck and I've been up since 5am AGAIN and I really need to go to bed so this is much, much shorter than planned. And it's mostly in the form of vid recs and quotes. Heh.

It's the End of the World As We Know It by sockkpuppett - a great universe vid that really gets the feel of seasons 1-5 and builds to "The Gift." (Website link. And, frankly, check out all of her Buffy vids while you're there.)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Abridged) by river_boat - an upbeat and tremendously fun look at the whole show. (Website link)

Rewind - an gentle, loving overview of the whole show. Very moving, and the final images are lovely. (YouTube link)

And via the Buffy Dialogue Database, some of my favorite quotes.

BUFFY: Why don't we start with, 'Hi, I'm Buffy,' and, uh, then let's segue directly into me asking you for a favor.
- Welcome to the Hellmouth

WILLOW: I think dummies are cute. You don't?
BUFFY: Uuuhhh. They give me the wig. Ever since I was little.
WILLOW: What happened?
BUFFY: I saw a dummy. It gave me the wig. There really wasn't a story there.

JONATHAN: We have one more award to give out. Is Buffy Summers here tonight? Did she, um... This is actually a new category. First time ever. I guess there were a lot of write-in ballots, and, um, the prom committee asked me to read this. "We're not good friends. Most of us never found the time to get to know you, but that doesn't mean we haven't noticed you. We don't talk about it much, but it's no secret that Sunnydale High isn't really like other high schools. A lot of weird stuff happens here."

Crowd outbursts: Zombies! Hyena people! Snyder! (laughter)

JONATHAN: "But, whenever there was a problem or something creepy happened, you seemed to show up and stop it. Most of the people here have been saved by you, or helped by you at one time or another. We're proud to say that the Class of '99 has the lowest mortality rate of any graduating class in Sunnydale history." (applause from the crowd) "And we know at least part of that is because of you. So the senior class, offers its thanks, and gives you, uh, this."

Jonathan produces a multicolored, glittering, miniature umbrella with a small metal plaque attached to the shaft.

JONATHAN: It's from all of us, and it has written here, "Buffy Summers, Class Protector."
- The Prom

I didn't start watching Buffy until it was airing the middle of Season 7. My first live episode was "Lies My Parents Told Me," but my very first episode was "Once More With Feeling," and I watched the rest of what I had missed in two or three episode chunks a day, fascinated and compelled. By the time "Chosen" aired, I had seen the whole show thanks to FX. I found TWoP and read every single one of the recaps after I finished watching an episode, and I posted a lot on the FX airing thread to complain about their network bumpers (God those were annoying!). I found music videos and was instantly hooked by them, and then of course I made one and that changed everything else. Vidding led me to fer1213 and catatonic1242, cat led me to Livejournal, and that eventually leads us to this moment. Even though I wasn't there from the beginning, Buffy has profoundly affected my life. I'm grateful that I stumbled on the musical all those years ago. Happy 10th Anniversary!

Thanks for everything, Buffy.

Today is the birthday of the supercalifragilisticexpialidocious molly_may!!

In honor of your birthday today, here is a Buffy-related poll. Read more...Collapse )

And molly may also suggested a couple of months ago that I rank the Firefly episodes from most to least favorite, and I'm finally doing it.

1. Out of Gas - winner by a hair because it has my favorite scene in the series and the back-and-forth storytelling
2. Objects In Space - a philosophical masterpiece
3. Ariel - The end is what officially made me an obsessive fan

From here it gets really tough.Read more...Collapse )

I hope you have a great day, molly may!
