I'm not writing this, but I had to get it out of my head...

Background: Captain America was the first modern "superhero". After he was KIA and the Second World War ended, the world turned to comic books and radio shows and movies for their superheroes. Batman was the second modern superhero, but the complete opposite of Captain America. Batman operated in the shadows, a vigilante that the government refused to legitimize. Next came Iron Man aka Tony Stark. Unlike Batman, Tony didn't believe in hiding his identity from the public. But he and Bruce weren't so different, otherwise. Their families had moved in similar, elite circles. The two boys attended the same boarding school until Tony's early acceptance to MIT and Bruce's expulsion for fighting. They were both genius billionaire playboy philanthropists. One other commonality: neither believed in asking permission from the government to do the things they believed needed doing.

Bruce Wayne: Based mostly on Nolan!Batman, only I'm pushing back the events of Batman Begins so that Bruce is ~40 years old (on par with Tony) and has been fighting crime as Batman for over a decade. He's slightly less grimdark than canon because he's had Tony as something of a support system since before puberty. Tony wasn't the greatest at being a friend, but Bruce remains desperately secretively appreciative of every fumbling attempt Tony's made over the years. (I'm drawing heavily from alchemyalice's When they finally come to destroy the earth (they'll have to go through you first). Ignore the fact that she demoted Rhodey three ranks.)

Tony Stark: No different, only he's been in a nominally open and ill-defined relationship with Bruce Wayne since not long after Bruce's return to Gotham. It didn't take Tony long to figure out Bruce was donning the cape and cowl since he knew Bruce's playboy persona was misdirection. Bruce and Tony have become more serious since Tony's kidnapping in Afghanistan and his subsequent coming out as Iron Man.

After the events of TDKR (which I still haven't seen, so I'm guessing here) Bruce hands the mantle down to John Blake or whoever, and starts spending more time in New York. The move was prompted partly because he'd nearly lost Tony in the Chitauri attack and partly because he'd come across a young Asian girl, maybe nine or ten years old, who had incredible fighting skills and no ability to communicate verbally.

Bruce and Tony adopt the girl (Cassandra Cain, because if I'm going to write kidfic, Bruce has a few canon progeny to choose from instead of picking on poor Peter Parker all the time, seriously guys) and raise her primarily in Manhattan, with Bruce taking her to Gotham whenever his duties took him home. Bruce is the primary caretaker and has a close bond with Cassandra. Tony, unfortunately, has been unable to find common ground with her except in their love for Bruce. ("I made you a robot pony! I booked Justin Bieber to sing at your birthday party! None of the other kids have robot ponies or Justin Bieber! I don't understaaaaand.")

At first Natasha is wary around Cassandra because, hello, daughter of a known assassin, trained by him, living in their midst. But of course she is also incredibly empathetic to Cassandra's situation. They bond over being raised as child assassins and Natasha, like Bruce, is able to interpret a lot of Cassandra's body language.

(Ugh, I really, really need to sleep. And stop procrastinating on everything. I move back to school on Labour Day.)

I've been bookmarking a few stories with the intent to eventually write a rec post, then realised I was never going to get around to it! Besides, you guys have probably seen these already. So here are the stories, with very little commentary.

1) Election Days by [personal profile] raven
The West Wing/Star Trek fusion | gen, CJ & Donna friendship | 2500 words
Ten trillion citizens, one thousand five hundred member worlds; CJ and Donna are getting through a lot of takeaway pizza.
I love Star Trek, especially the scope of the 'verse, its vast and diverse population, the politics and cultures. And I love CJ and Donna, so mix it all together and you get AWESOME.

2) I'm not a sucker so I don't need a bodyguard by [personal profile] musesfool
Batman: The Animated Series/Angel the Series | gen, Cordelia Chase & Bruce Wayne | 2935 words
Cordelia's been in the game long enough that she can spot a secret identity from a mile away.
Cordelia wakes up from her coma and starts a new life. Just really well-done Cordy POV and snark, plus Bruce being pleasantly surprised by the girl from the office assistant pool.

3) A Fellowship to Call Your Own by antistar_e
The Social Network/Harry Potter fusion | Mark/Eduardo, ensemble | 20,700 words
"'Minion'," goes Mark, looking up at the last second. "It's Slytherin for friend." And, for a beat, Eduardo looks remarkably pleased.
Mark and Christy are Slytherins, Eduardo is a Hufflepuff, and Erica is a Gryffindor. Delightful fun!

4) Branching Out by mhalachaiswords
Criminal Minds/Stargate SG-1 | gen, JJ & Jack, SG-1 v1.0 | SPOILERS for CM 6x02
"Miss Jareau, we're involved in a project that has the potential to change everything, and we're trying to make sure we have some... strategies in place, in case the project is exposed prematurely."
JJ goes to the Pentagon and meets General Jack O'Neill. This is what I like to believe happens next.

5 and 6) Heart of a Lion and Five Things Tyler Didn't Expect from Slayer Camp by [personal profile] tassosss
Buffy the Vampire Slayer(/Stargate SG-1) | gen, OCs & Xander | 6300 words & 1865 words
'One girl' in all the world became 'many girls' became 'one boy'.
Tassos' much-loved Bridges is a BtVS/Stargate SG-1 crossover, but its two sequels are strictly Buffyverse and focus mostly on Tyler, an FtM Slayer that Xander tracks down. The OCs are wonderful and so are the canon BtVS characters.

Words: 7070
Rating: PG
Summary: When heavily armed strangers come to Athos seeking help for their flooding city, Teyla discovers a glimmer of hope that the Wraith might one day be defeated.
Author's Note: (1) A thank you to [personal profile] gaffsie and [personal profile] zillah975 for the quick beta! (2) Teyla's son, Torren, is not named for Kanaan's brother, Toran. (3) Title inspired by the Starfleet Academy motto (in turn inspired by Apollo 13's, in turn inspired by the US Naval Academy's). It means from the stars, hope.

Title: Why They Fight
Author: [personal profile] scrollgirl
Fandom: Stargate SG-1/Stargate Atlantis
Characters: Jack, Teal'c, Teyla (plus SG-1, Landry, Woolsey, and Team Sheppard)
Words: 1900
Rating: PG
Author's Note: Originally posted in friendshipper's Dreamwidth, though I didn't really follow the prompt. It's meta in fic form--my fingerprints are all over it, unfortunately. HOWEVER. If you love the idea of Team = Family, especially SG-1 = Family, then you might enjoy this. Spoilers for both series.

Summary: "I was under the impression that those who serve in the Stargate Program do not have children," Teyla says slowly.

Why They FightCollapse )

What is fanon: (1) Sara O'Neill being read into the program; (2) the Mitchell cousins; (3) Teal'c's grandchild. Everything else is pretty much canon.

[personal profile] brownbetty's post about Figure-Outers and Secret-Keepers explains perfectly how I feel about crossovers. I love crossovers, but I'm also obsessively nit-picky about them and will often back-button out of a story that trips my implausibility alarms. Most often that alarm is tripped by OOC writing--when Character A from Fandom X spills all her deepest, darkest secrets to Character B from Fandom Y at the slightest provocation. YMMV, of course, but considering Jack O'Neill has resisted, you know, TORTURE AND DEATH to keep his secrets, I'm extremely leery of crossovers in which confidential information, names and connections, and even painful personal histories are tossed around willy-nilly.

Secrets must be earned. Whether it's through years of loyal friendship1 or being given top-level security clearance or because you're Veronica Mars and you don't understand the meaning of "I'm gonna kill you if you don't stop asking questions", the Figure-Outer must work hard to earn the truth. (1 Romantic love seems to be the exception, all too often, which means it's also written extremely poorly, all too often. XP )

[personal profile] melannen jumps off Betty's post:
I agree halfway: if the secret is discovered too easily, or the people trying to figure out the secret don't have to do the work, it ruins the crossover. But my problem with many of the example crossovers people listed is that the figure-outers ought to *know the secret already*, because the figure-outers in our fandoms are usually pretty well connected and very good at what they do. And if they don't know, it's probably because the secret-keepers have been actively interfering with them well before your crossover started. These are people whose avocations mesh: they shouldn't always be walking into the crossover with a clean slate.

I agree with her in general, though I'm far more likely to believe Charlie Eppes (Numb3rs) or Temperance Brennan (Bones) already knowing about the Stargate Program versus House being given that level of clearance. Because House is... not someone I'd trust with government secrets, is all I'm saying. *g*

But it makes perfect sense that certain types of characters must already know the secret, and having that connection already established means I'm far less likely to question its plausibility. It's the same reason I accept established pairings more readily than "will they, won't they" pairings that get together later in canon. I can more easily trust that, if these secrets are known, these people are together, then there must have been really good reasons for it, even if canon takes its time to spell it out or perhaps never makes it explicit at all.

A few more pointsCollapse )

In the end, I think the key is to respect the characters and their canons. While my personal opinion is that the characters with the most to lose are the ones who will exit the story having learned the most and given away the least, fanfic can make anything plausible given enough set-up and proper motivation--as long as the characters stay true to themselves.

Title: Ascend the Brightest Heaven of Invention
Series: Brightest Heaven 'verse

Rating: PG-13 for one swear word
Words: 8200
Spoilers: "The Torment of Tantalus", "Lost City", "Reckoning", and "Threads" for SG-1, and "Rising" and "McKay and Mrs. Miller" for SGA
Author's Note: Written for femgenficathon. With heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been cheering me on. I can't promise there will be more to come, but it's already been a great ride.
Prompt: 119. Authority has every reason to fear the sceptic, for authority can rarely survive in the face of doubt. ~ Vita Sackville-West (1892-1962), bisexual English poet, author, columnist, creator of the gardens of Sissinghurst Castle and member of the Order of the Companions of Honour.

Summary: In 2005, Jeannie McKay prepares for the trip of a lifetime: a possibly one-way ticket to the Pegasus galaxy in search of the lost city of the Ancients. Is anyone else signing up for xover_exchange? I am seriously tempted, but considering my track record with writing to a deadline, I don't know if it's the best idea. Still, the pressure to finish because there's someone out there, expecting a story, would be a good motivator. I just don't want to disappoint my recipient.

Of course, regardless of whether I'll end up participating, I had to fill out the sign-up form to generate crossover scenarios. My favourite is:

Fandoms: Stargate SG-1/Star Trek; Scenario: In this fusion AU, the Enterprise crew are officers in the United States Air Force. New SGC recruits Kirk, Uhura, and Sulu are assigned to a team with Spock. SG-1 characters remain the same.

Also, I had fun vetoing characters out of the story. *g* Every single one was white and male.
