A mind narrows when it has too much to bear. Art is not born of unwanted constriction. Art wants formless and spacious quiet, anti-social daydreaming, time away from the consumptive volume of everyday life.

Once in a while you stumble on a book that through some confluence of miraculous serendipity contains exactly the words you need to read at exactly the right time. Birds Art Death Life, which I excitedly blew through this week is one of those books for me it seems, as I’ve been feeling a bit unfocused of late, resulting in a somewhat uncomfortable creative period for me. But a rest is good though. It’s ok — natural even. For me, the trick is to continually remind myself that the quiet, when you’re not looking, always leads to something.
