Through Lines 211
Everything about The Mysteries feels so far away from what the world knows of the work of Bill Watterson, but its mysteries also somehow feel precisely like the stranger corners of the world of Calvin and Hobbes. Bill and John Kascht even made a great video discussing their unusual work together.
- “…our enjoyment of life is taken from us by the not-enoughness at the hollow heart of consumerism, only to be sold back to us at the price of the latest product, and sold in discriminating proportion along lines of stark income inequality.” There’s a lot to unpack in this biting line on the measure of a life from The Marginalian.
- Trust is not a given and it’s amazing how cavalier companies of all types are about how they change the rules in the middle of the game, often on a yearly basis, and how we do little to push back. We see you Adobe, Spotify, and Open AI (among others).
- See?? Tech leopards keep showing their spots and somehow we seem to keep believing they’re better than they are. Guess what, mostly, they’re not1.
- “… you can’t be a hater if you’re not a lover, too. A lover who loves everything is insincere. A hater, on the other hand, is merely someone who is picky about what they love.” Considered thoughts on being a critic by Elizabeth Goodspeed.
- Every episode in the ongoing Kirby video series has taught me something useful and interesting. The latest episode on Routing is no exception.
- Head down a deep rabbit hole with these videos covering the process of making TAMA drums and KOIDE cymbals in Japan. Thanks for sharing these Luke.
- Amos Kennedy Jr.: Citizen Printer is coming to the Letterform Archive. Do not miss this exhibit which runs from June 29, 2024 to Jan 2025.
- Color Dot font screams Raygun in terms of vibe but is visually much more charming.
- Why is Earth called that? A good question that we don’t really have an answer to.
- 251 words you can spell with a calculator, including the 3 you already know ;-)
- Type Atlas from Dan Burzo is shaping up to be a very useful resource.
Footnotes
- There are of course exceptions who, bless them, are trying to do the right thing and remain respectful of users. It’s infuriating though that most forget so quickly that trust is hard to earn and so easily lost when they get distracted by the latest shiny thing. ↩
