Through Lines 209
“Now what we’re looking at is not an extension of the physical self, but an extension of the mental self.” A now 14-year old TED talk from Amber Case covering technological concepts we’re now all too familiar with — yet still surprisingly current.
- If Simon Case is right about how AI will likely disrupt agencies and some in-house teams, it strikes me as proof of the benefits of leaning into a generalist mindset.
- “You have to go after what you want because no one has your best interests like you do.” Katie Caldwell on career conundrums. One hundred percent true, just as you have to protect your time/space because no one else will do that for you.
- It’s not all or nothing. We can have both. The little video towards the end of this great piece from iA reminded me of R.E.M.’s video for We All Go Back to Where We Belong entirely based on live reactions from Kirsten Dunst listening to Michael Stipe sing accapella to her. Today I learned there’s a second version of the video.
- I find myself increasingly intrigued to see the Daylight Computer (tablet). It definitely can’t replace everything I need to be able to do, but it’s a refreshing idea. A stunning website too and feels like a real departure from the usual Silicon Valley tech vibe.
- Speaking of other weird and intriguing new tech, tinyPod is one I’ll be watching.
- This lengthy but highly illustrative article on the importance of Transformers in Generative AI from the Financial Times goes a long way to explain how it all works in a way that mere mortals can actually understand (which is important).
- A trove of images and backstory on The Greenbrier Nuclear Bunker in West Virginia.
- Time spent towards mastery is always going to be a superior path than focusing just on tools and shortcuts. It’s the process, stupid.
- The Bear is coming back for Season 3 soon. Get ready.
- A list of inventors killed by their own inventions. Who will be added next?
- Although this sounds like good news, my knees would like to discuss this further…
- An unexpectedly handy Google Search tip.
- In the good advice department: half-ass it.
- I needed a good lol.
Footnotes
Another crazy week in the valley punctuated by tech companies maybe moving fast and breaking things. Nothing new — yet never not disappointing to see. I managed to drop by the Letterform Archive for Craig Frazier’s book event last night and took a few moments to reflect on a year outside of Meta (officially as of today) and am now easing into plans to do some printing this weekend.
Oh, and you might have noticed that I made the first of some visual changes ‘round here.
