Through Lines 169
I wondered if there would be an official video for any of the so-far released tracks from Peter Gabriel’s forthcoming i/o album and it seems this seemingly AI-generated animation for The Court, created by Oranguerillatan is the first.
- I can only imagine some of the pent-up stories that many of my Meta colleagues have that could now theoretically come out as a result of this ruling about severance rules.
- Marte’s primer on Riso Printing over at FontStand is solid and covers all the basics and a bit more, especially details specific and relevant for type designers.
- I kind of love the idea behind the Maxon Hose with its train-inspired roll-away studio space that allows it to sit closer to the nearby treelined.
- Another fantastic, professionally recorded and new to me, solo acoustic set from Canada’s Kathleen Edwards at the Kerrville Folk Festival in May 2022.
- Speaking of type, there’s so much great info in this wonderful deep dive from Leah Spencer on Type Revivals for Film and TV. Best job ever? Maybe.
- Steinberg Meets the Eameses is going on my design library book wishlist.
- Also going on the book wishlist is From One Universe to Another 2 by Hattie Stewart and produced by Color Code, a fab Riso shop located in the west end of Toronto.
- July was the World's Hottest Month on Record. I can unscientifically confirm based on the number of times I felt like I was overheating while outdoors. Yikes.
- For reference: Books About Signs at the Letterform Archive. May have to ask them to pull a few of these next week when I’m there.
- Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker's commencement speech from Northwestern University is absolute solid gold. He had me at the “spot the idiot” bit.
- A big toque tip to Kottke for directing my eyeballs towards the outstanding and highly detailed painting work of Karla Knight which is totally my jam.
- Blocking AI Crawler Bots from Indexing Your Stuff. Promptly implemented here.
- Design Reviewed. Well, there go my weekend plans in the bin…
- I'm a Luddite and So Can You. It me.
- The Continental looks like ridiculous, and obscenely violent fun.
- I’m intrigued by My Mind and particularly their open manifesto.
- Gutenberg! The Musical! Ohhhh-kay?
- RIP Robbie Robertson.
Notable Type Releases
- The two styles and more than 200 languages supported by Delve Fonts’ Loniki, designed by Steven Skaggs, makes it a stunner. It manages to capture a sense of architecture, culture, and history without feeling stuffy or dated.
- Marmite Defontes released a bunch of new type this week including the intriguing Snacks monotype collection (20 different designs as a set), the grid-based Kuiper family, and the Piggle Puff family. Delightful all around.
- The sharp, angular wedges in the five styles of Kabitz from Colophon give it a playful crisp and sophisticated look while remaining highly functional. The not overdone use of ink traps fits well, adding useful function to the characters.
- Breaking from a conventional calligraphic model, Leinster Type’s Aligne is a high contrast geometric sans family where the forms take an unusual approach and are constructed out of the shapes of the letterforms rather than the strokes themselves.
- Colophon also added a series of new styles (Thin, Extra Light, and Light) to their already expansive 84 style “anti-genre” super family Chromatic. Wowzers!
- Raptor Mono extends the Raptor Text family with an easy-to-read monospace that offers even color and smart slabs into the glyphs to compensate for readability.
