Single Strokes

A painting of a grinning man in a blue dress shirt with an ugly brown and green tie and pocket protector full of pens holding a sign painters quill against a green background

They don’t make font packaging like they used to, though did anyone else come close to matching what House Industries was doing back in the 90s and early 2000s? Emigre maybe? Every time I rummage around in my archives and flip through packaging or specimens from either House or Emigre it makes me think about how bland modern design so often is. The fact that I have physical copies of packaging for the Sign Painter, Ed Benguiat, and Eames collections now feels quite special — and unusual.

The Eames set in particular is special because the limited edition numbered package itself is a beautifully finished wooden art piece that also happens to hold a CD of fonts.

Nostalgia? Maybe a little. But also an opportunity for someone.
