DJ Hairy Larry Presents Billy Jones Singing My Love Is Real

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Billy Jones Singing My Love Is Real
From The Archives Of Something Blue – March 15, 2026

Billy Jones & Delta Blues Outlaws

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a blues song that’s on two albums.

Billy Jones is as fine a performer as you are likely to hear anywhere, his guitar burns, his vocals soothe, and his showmanship entertains. I believe he knows how to do his job.

Some years back he sent me an album called “My Love Is Real” and when searching for some good links for you I found an album on bandcamp called “Billy Jones & Delta Blues Outlaws”. On this album I found the song “My Love Is Real” and after checking the track lists carefully all of the songs from his old album are on this newer release. And five more songs too.

So that’s the one you want. I’ve got a link to it at the Something Blue website, sbblues.com. You can listen for free and you can buy the high quality files and download them.

Bandcamp is great that way. You can listen and see if you really like the album before you pay, just a little bit, to get the best quality. And, unlike the streaming services, most of that money goes to the musicians.

But with Billy Jones you don’t have to worry. All of his albums are great.

So now, here’s the title track of “My Love Is Real”, also released on Billy Jones & Delta Blues Outlaws which you can get on bandcamp. Isn’t that fun?

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Suzanne and Fred Playing Two Sets Of Books

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Suzanne and Fred Playing Two Sets Of Books
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2026-03-08

Fred and Suzanne

Thanks Marty today we’re going to hear Uncle Fred The Deadhead sing a song that was topical in 2001.

The truth is Fred’s song is always topical. It seems that there’s always a few people around trying to finagle their pot of gold with some questionable accounting.

On May 20, 2007, we hosted the Arkansas Blues Caravan at the Craighead Forest Bandshell. Musicians from all over the state came in to play for us. Helping organize this were my friends from Little Rock, Suzanne Michell, Fred Wilson, and Mike Dollins.

Of course I recorded the show for Something Blue. What a great opportunity to feature some fine outstanding Arkansas musicians. I’ll drop some links to music and photos at sbblues.com.

Now Fred Wilson has a way of writing topical songs that are funny. He wrote this great song called “Two Sets Of Books” and Suzanne and Fred laid it right out for us, delivered on a platter.

I’m not sure if he was inspired by the Enron scandal or if they were inspired by his song. I mean, maybe they heard it and thought it just might be a good idea. Nah, probably not.

So now, recorded at the Arkansas Blues Caravan on May 20, 2007, Here’s Suzanne and Fred singing Fred Wilson’s song, “Two Sets Of Books”.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents jazz blues fusion Playing Monkey Walk

DJ Hairy Larry Presents jazz blues fusion playing Monkey Walk
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2026-03-01

– White Rats And Meerkats

Thanks Marty, Today we’re going to hear an original song played by jazz blues fusion.

jazz blues fusion is the name of the band and it’s spelled . Fusion is a jazz genre based on the fusion of jazz and rock. Jazz and rock are both closely related to the blues. We’re playing blues fusion, that is fusion with an extra dose of the blues. So we play blues fusion. I know. I just made that up. I started tagging all of our songs so that became the name of the band. Pronounced jazz blues fusion. I know. It gets confusing.

James Carvell played at Blues Fest with his band, Striding The Blast. When I invited him to play guitar with NJHB we really liked my new song, “Monkey Walk” and we recorded it on the NJHB album, “Live At Blues Fest”. He played his guitar with a talk box which is a really cool effect where you can make your guitar sing. I’ll post a link at the Something Blue website, sbblues.com.

James Carvell and Mike “Zif” Lovell at Blues Fest

So when we got together to play in jazz blues fusion of course “Monkey Walk” was on our list.

The “Monkey Walk” we’re hearing tonight was recorded on August 31, 2025, and released on our album “White Rats and Meerkats”. Playing on the album are

Eliecer Tamez, trumpet
James Carvell, guitar
Craig Collison, drums
Hairy Larry, piano and vocals

We all have a history at ASU.

Our bass player, Paul Nunis, was unable to play that night but he will be featured on Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00. We have also added two guitarists, Logan White and David Shade, who will also be on Something Blue. Along with Weather Report so if you like fusion don’t miss it.

I don’t sing on this version. We had just dusted it off and I didn’t have the lyrics. The song does have some cool words to go with it and I will sing it, recorded at a later date, on Something Blue.

All right now, recorded at HairyLarryLand on August 31, 2025, here’s jazz blues fusion playing “Monkey Walk”.

From The Archives Of Something Blue – 2026-02-22

Delta Legends – Hog Jowl Blues

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear an original blues song written by two Arkansas musicians and played by an Arkansas band.

When I met Ben Ben Adler, way back in the nineties, he talked to me about bringing Mack Self and the Silver Dollar Band to Blues Fest. Well Mack was an American rockabilly singer, who recorded for Sun Records in the 1950s and that was a perfect fit for Blues Fest. It was great, Mack Self sang his rockabilly hits with his band including Ben Ben on drums.

When they came back again Ben Ben said he had a band too, and they would like to play, next year if posible. So I booked Ben Ben and when it was time for his set he got all spiffed up and came out with a guitar. After delivering a sizzling R&B set with his band and guest musicians I was a fan.

Well, I saw Ben Ben at the Levon Helm Down Home Jubilee last year and I talked to him about playing with Delta Legends. He was up for it and we got together at John Shepherd’s WhatEverLand studio outside of Wynne, Arkansas. We recorded in November and December and released two albums, “Mr. John B. Shepherd” and “Hog Jowl Blues”.

To close this circle, “Hog Jowl Blues” is a song that Ben Ben wrote with Mack Self. So we’re getting the Arkansas Roots all the way down. Just like turtles.

Playing on the album were

John B. Shepherd – guitar and vocals
Ben Ben Adler – drums and vocals
David McCulley – bass
and
Hairy Larry – harmonica and vocals

Go to the Something Blue website at sbblues.com to see the album art, which is possibly the best album cover art of all time. Thanks Unsplash.

So now here’s Delta Legends, featuring Ben Ben Adler singing a song he cowrote with Mack Self, “Hog Jowl Blues”.

Recorded at WhatEverLand on December 12, 2025, that’s Ben Ben Adler singing the title track of the Delta Legends album, “Hog Jowl Blues”. Don’t miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00, for more Delta Legends, Jeff Beck, Ray Gomez, and Nigel Harpur.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Bebop Beatniks Playing Church

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Bebop Beatniks Playing Church
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2026-02-15

Bebop Beatniks

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear the title track of a Bebop Beatniks album recorded live in Brookland, Arkansas.

As you all know I love live music and I play a lot of live music recordings on Something Blue. And I do have a Bebop Beatniks album compiled from a number of concerts that we played from 2016 to 2019. The album is called “Church” and all the songs on the album are originals. I picked the title track to play today.

Now sometimes I write a song that’s just poppin’ with that bounce and that swing that makes you jump. “Church” isn’t like that. It’s a beautiful song at a slow tempo with interesting changes and a gorgeous melody. Believe me, it’s the slower songs that are harder to write and harder to play.

“Church” was recorded at the Brookland United Methodist Church on May 29, 2016, and featured

Kevin Tinker – trumpet
Paul Nunis – bass
Hairy Larry – piano
Sid Davis – trumpet
Joseph Curtis – flugelhorn
Matt Burnside – xylophone
Jay Shepherd – guitar
and
Chris Isom – drums

All fine outstanding Arkansas musicians with ties to ASU.

After the head we’ll hear the brass triumvirate, Kevin on trumpet, Joseph on flugelhorn, and Sid on trumpet, burning it up, followed by some absolutely amazing guitar work played by Jay Shepherd. Then Jay and I play an improvised duet and the triumvirate takes it out with improvised harmonies.

Needless to say, I’m very pleased with this recording and I hope you enjoy it.

Ok now, here’s Bebop Beatniks playing “Church”.
