Class Reunion

My 5-year class reunion for high school is coming up on June 11th...ughhhh. How do I get sucked in to plan these things??? Which also means I HAVE to attend....double ughhhh. To make this event more fulfilling, I'm officially dieting and busting my ass during my workouts for the next three weeks. If I have to be at this thing, I may as well look fabulous ;)

Goal: To lose 5 lbs and tone up.

It's on, brah.

More ink: planning stages

So I'm not planning on getting another tattoo for another year or so, and where I would get it is still pretty up in the air. However, I kind of want this next one to be representative of my passion for the field of scientific research. I love this quote by Albert Einstein:

"The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science."

I'd like for the tattoo to have some sort of symbol for "art" and "science" culminating on the "mysterious" experience we know as life. I'm not creative or artistic so if there are any artists out there who would be willing to take on a commission please let me know! I'd really love it if enemytosleep designed one of pieces sometime but it doesn't necessarily have to be this one :)

EDIT: or if anyone just has some ideas they'd like to throw out there it would all be very much appreciated!

3 months later...

Apologies for not posting in...forever. I've been a busy little bee lately and now that the semester is over and the 'rents have left I have a moment to breathe (before I start in my new lab rotation later today?)

To catch everyone up on what's been going on in my life, I'm going to post the truncated version. I dropped out of my sister's weight off a while ago because I had plateaued and wasn't looking to really drop much more weight that quickly, but I have been working out a lot and running (with the exception of this past week when my parents and best friend were visiting, ughhh). Hopefully I can get back to my regular schedule this week! I ran in the Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure last Sunday and managed a 5K in 26 minutes...I would have liked to finish in 24 minutes but decided it was a good time for my first race in 5 years. Since then I've increased my workouts to have a 5K be my short run for the week and running 4-5 miles of the other run days, and I also added a fifth day for some cardio. My friends and I are going to be signing up for a summer spinning or zumba class once a week which I'm pretty excited about also :) Yay, fitness!

I found a new apartment! I will be moving sometime in July, the lease is still be written up by my landlord so hopefully by the end of the week it will be signed and I'll have some move-in dates! I'm very excited to have a one-bedroom apartment that also has mucho counter space in the kitchen! I really like cooking but have been limited in my current apartment that LITERALLY has no counter at all and so I'm forced to prepare food on my kitchen table which is too low :( New apartment also has a large walk-in closet for storage which I lack at the moment as well. It's in a cute and quiet neighborhood, but it's further away from campus/everything. However, I have my bike here and am totally willing to start riding it as compensation for peace, quiet, and space!

Let's see, what else? My parents came down last week from Monday-Thursday to visit. I don't know why, but I get very aggravated when they are here. I feel terrible but it's hard to deal with them in the city. My dad wants to see EVERYTHING but insists we drive there, which is super inconvenient in a big city :( My mother is just picky and refuses to eat anywhere that doesn't offer plain cheeseburgers, which is also hard for me to find because I don't eat plain American food when I go out. Thankfully my best friend also visited from Tuesday-Saturday and so kept me sane. I took the 'rents to Olde City and walked around Penn's Landing, then went to see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. We ate at Copa Banana which everyone really enjoyed, surprisingly! Wednesday we all went to Reading Terminal Market which was a lot of fun! We ate there and also hit up the Italian Market in the afternoon. My friend and I grabbed breakfast with them at their hotel Thursday morning before they left for my sister's and then spent the rest of the day at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Rodin Museum, and the Frankling Institute. I took my friend out to some bars/dancing that night with my friends from school which was a good time, as always. Friday we went shopping along Walnut Street where she forced me to give my phone number to the very cute store manager at The North Face. *dies of embarrassment*

I had a pretty lazy rest of the weekend and am starting in my new lab this afternoon (technically) by meeting up with my new PI and one of the post-docs to discuss my project and get clearance to the building. I know I said this would be the short version so I will wrap up here. Happy Monday!

Accents meme

Stolen from a_big_apple because I'm procrastinating and not working on my presentation.

I'm from Northern Central Massachusetts...but now that I live in Philadelphia it's pretty apparent that I have a slight Boston accent...and my friends burst out laughing a few weeks ago because I said "wicked" without even realizing it...Whoops!

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: Boston

You definitely have a Boston accent, even if you think you don't. Of course, that doesn't mean you are from the Boston area, you may also be from New Hampshire or Maine.

My Neighbor Totoro

Just watched another Miyazaki masterpiece last night :) It was super cute! I must say I wasn't expecting Totoro to be so....scary? Although one of my favorite scenes was when the girls were waiting at the bus stop to give their dad his umbrella and Totoro shows up with a leaf on his head and they all just stand there for a moment, side by side. I laughed so hard!!! Adorable!!

I really liked all of his movies, of the ones I've seen so far. Except for Ponyo. The thing about the others I've seen is that the characters are accepting of the weird shit that happens because they seem to know it's all a part of the world they live in. For example, in Howl's Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke, witches and demons are considered "normal" to the characters and so they aren't too surprised to encounter them. However, in Ponyo they live in a fairly normal and modern world, and then at the end WEIRD SHIT happens and everyone is just okay with it? I thought it was bizarre. I also thought it bizarre for people to allow two 4-year-olds to sail around in a little boat all by themselves! ANDDDD Ponyo's dad was a total creep (which I'm pretty sure the mom points out at one point).

Next on the list is Castle in the Sky :D

5K Run for breast cancer

Sorry if you received this is an e-mail, I'm way too lazy to type out another version of this:

Hello everyone,

I started a team with some girls in my Ph.D program to run a 5K race this spring for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure for breast cancer. As I'm sure you know, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women and is the most commonly contracted female cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1.3 million women will be diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide each year. Researchers predict that 1 out of every 8 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast carcinoma, which means that we all have a friend or family member who has been or who will be affected by this disease. Between 1998 and 2007 the incidence of breast cancer was only reduced 2%, leading to the need for continued research for a cure. We are running to support the cause and raise money for continued research to find a cure for this devastating disease. Below is a link to donate to our team! Please forward this to anyone you know who would be willing to support us and the fight against breast cancer!

Thank you!

busy busy

Sorry for the complete lack of posts lately. I suck! I've been so swamped this past week in lab and I had to give a presentation in one of my classes :/ And this was also our second (and final, thank goodness) recruiting weekend so I was also running around showing the recruits a good time in Philly and at Penn :) Not much to report, anyhow. Because of all this craziness I haven't made it to the gym in AGES. I feel so fat and lazy. Booooooo. Maybe tomorrow after shopping I will go for a lovely run!

Ohhhhhh, and speaking of running I've convinced some of the girls in my program to sign up for and run a 5k for breast cancer in Philly in May!!! I'm so excited!!! This will definitely force me to get my ass in gear if I have to get in shape and train for a race! It's my first time doing a charity RUN...I've done many walks and team things but never a run so I'm interested to see how this one goes! It's a small race, only 1200 or so participants allowed. :D

Today I got the best free brunch OF MY LIFE at Marathon Bar and Grille in West Philly with the recruits! The croissant sandwich came with home fries and had apple smoked bacon, eggs, and fried apples on it yummmmmmmy :) In about an hour I'm leaving to hop on a train to New Brunswick to meet up with my friend UMass that I worked with and we are going out for dinner and then to see comedian Dave Attell...I'm so excited to see her it's been like 3 or 4 months! Then tomorrow is shopping for red tank tops for enemytosleep 's and my cosplay outfits! We are going as Liz and Patti Thompson from Soul Eater to Zenkaikon!!!! Ahhhh my first anime con! SO glad I get to go with my sister and cosplay with her :) Especially since Todd Haberkorn is going to be there!!! XD

Philly is really starting to grow on me this semester. Now that I've completely cut my ex out of my life I'm making some really awesome friends and going out and enjoying the city so much more! The dining in Philadelphia is superb and city life is starting to feel more normal. I also think I've decided that I'm going to stick this out and get the Ph. D instead of mastering out. I need some time away from MA to figure things out and network and meet new people. 5-6 years sounds like a long time when I think about being in school but then I think that I'm going to be working for the rest of my life, I'd like to take 5-6 more years and be a "student" and work hard btu get to play hard too ;) Love Penn Pharm!
