Putrid-Rot-Blight-Sword-Kings!?

This week I finally finished up a unit of ten old Putrid Blightking models, which I put on 32mm bases to use as Rotswords in my Maggotkin of Nurgle.

The NEW Putrid Blightkings seem more like lightly-armoured, sumo-warrior-priests of some sort... The role of heavily armoured tanks has been passed on to the Rotswords. Putrid Blightkings are still pretty tanky... but in a 3-Health kind of way instead of the 3+ Save kind of way.  Rotswords now have 3+ save... Putrid Blightkings have been reduced to a 5+ save.

While a few of these guys have bare bellies, ALL of the new Blightkings are shimmying about the battlefield with their corpulent bellies bare for the world to see... though with armoured trousers and helmets...?!

These guys read more like heavily armoured tanks than Buddha-in-plate-mail-pants, so... Rotswords...

"Rotswords"

At some point I'd like to get a box of the newer Rotswords and mix and match them with the Putrid-Rot-Blight-Sword-Kings of this unit, so it is utterly clear what the two units are.

I probably won't be rushing out to get those (or any of the NEW Putrid Blightkings) anytime SOON... I pre-ordered the Disciples of Tzeentch Warpflame Cavalcade Battleforce... and that is released this weekend! So I'll be plenty busy with THAT... and a few Tzeentch things I already have (a pile of Kairic Acolytes and Tzaangors and some flamers and a Magister on Disc of Tzeentch), and the rest of the Nurgle stuff I already OWN (which in now just the Feculent Gnarlmaw, a Harbinger of Decay, four Pussgoyle Blighlords, ten Rotmier Creed and the eight Pestigors from Darkwater!) AND the  Sylvaneth for Amanda... which is, I think just the two treelords and putting the last touches on Drycha Hamadreth...?

(Oh, and then fifteen models that can be build either as Tree-Revenants or Spite-Revenants...? I'm king of leaning towards just building them ALL as Spite-Revenants... but maybe I'll wait until we've played a few more games and see which works out better...)

I also have a few Soulblight Gravelord things to finish for Cursed City: Nemesis - ten Grave Guard, a Necromancer, and three Vargheists... then I'll be SO CLOSE to finishing ALL the Soulblight Gravelords, I should really just push through and finish the Blood Knights and the Warhammer Underworlds warband and they they'll ALL be DONE (I think...?)

The Cankerborn

The Cankerborn are some Nurgle Daemons that were included in Warhammer Quest: Darkwater. They are born of despoiling the realm itself, especially place of power (like the Jade Abbey!)

The Cankerborn

According to the latest Battle Profiles, the Cankerborn are HEROES....?! They can include any Daemon in a regiment they command!? I absolutely DO NOT need MORE heroes to lead more regiments, though! Luckily, these two can be included in Gelgus Pust's or the Great Unclean One's regiments as a "Plague Scion" - or, apparently, in a regiment commanded by Belga the Cystwitch...? So that's where they'd be fielded if ever I was playing with a game big enough I needed to include these!

(They can also be included in a regiment commanded by Festus the Leechlord or Rotigus... but it's not likely I'll be picking up either at any point in the immediate future!)

I've also been working on the Pestigors this weekend, but probably won't finish them up until early this next week... I actually have an exam on Monday I need to spend SOME time today studying for!?

Then it's just Belga the Cystwitch and the three heroes (and familiar.. and a few tokens...) and I'll be DONE all of the Warahmmer Quest: Darkwater miniatures!!

Pox-Wretches

Pox-Wretches are the lowliest of Nurgle's Rotbringer minions. Human cultists that revel in filth and disease. I imagine they could easily be mistaken for zombies, except that they move faster and slightly better at fighting (The have the same stat profile as Deathrattle Skeletons - except they move 5" instead of 4")

Pox-Wretches

These came with Warhammer Quest: Darkwater.

I painted them very quickly - just doing my rusty metal mix and then blocking in basic colours and then I sloshed the whole model with Agrax Earthshade. The look a bit of a mess on close inspection... but they're SUPPOSED to look a bit of a mess!!

The Mire Kelpies were on the same frame, so in Age of Sigmar they are included in the unit as tokens that can be expended to help spread disease against their opponents in combat.

A fun little addition to my growing Maggotkin of Nurgle army and a large chunk of the miniatures I needed to finish to get started on Warhammer Quest: Darkwater!

All the Darkwater Hostiles stuff so far!

I still have eight Pestigors that I'd like to finish before we start the campaign! They shouldn't take TOO long as I was trying to get them done for the first time we tried playing Warhammer Quest: Darkwater... but had to abandon them when it became clear I just wasn't going to finish them AND get ANY sleep...

After the Pestigors, there are just a few more characters and monsters to finish up - Belga the Cystwitch, the two Cankerborn and the three other Heroes; Kelthannor, Drasher Vorn, and Jacobus Vyne (with his familiar, Wisper).

I hope to get them ALL done before the long weekend - just a week away!

Once I have all the Darkwater stuff finished, it will be back to working on the rest of the Maggotkin of Nurgle and Sylvaneth stuff... and then maybe some Tzeentch stuff, as that is being released a little earlier than I expected!!

All the Maggotkin of Nurgle stuff, so far.. In addition to the Pestigors and Belga the Cystwitch and the Cankerborn... I have a unit of Rotmier Creed, four Pusgoyle Blightlords, five Putrid Blightkings (which I may put on 32mm bases and call Rotswords) and a Harbinger of Decay to finish up...

It's Been Kind of Quiet Around Here...

I haven't been painting a lot of miniatures so far this year...

Partly this is because I've been a bit busy, having returned to school...

But also earlier this month I injured my shoulder and neck and that's made it pretty painful to sit and paint or assemble miniatures...

This is really kind of bumming me out as I was REALLY hoping to be playing Warhammer Quest: Darkwater in February, but I still have so many miniatures to paint still!!

On the plus side...

(this meme was probably funnier when a friend posted it on their discord just a week into the year!)

It's a bit more of an actual brag that I made it through January without buying any miniatures!

Especially considering Dragon's Den Games had three copies of Fury of the Deep and one copy of Warcry Heart of Ghur on their discount shelf at 40% off! The contents of Fury of the Deep I think I calculated to be around $500CAD now... and 40% off the original retail price put it at around $120...? At one point I would not have thought twice about buying that... do I NEED a force of Idoneth Deepkin or Fyreslayers?! Fuck no! But they would be FUN to have a paint up!

Realistically, I haven't painted more than a unit or two... or maybe a Unit and a character...? from the last three of those old battle boxes I've picked up...

(no... that's not true, I DID paint ALL of the Nighthaunt half of Arena of Shades! That's kind of how I ended up with a Nighthaunt Spearhead Army - after I bought a few more units...)

I DID pick up the new Nurgle Battletome... but that's about it...

NONE of the new Nurgle units or the new Nurgle Spearhead army, though! I'll probably pick up that new spearhead - just to get the units it contains (SO MANY NURGLINGS!!) for considerably less than the regular retail price of the individual units!

(The above image is ©2026 Games Workshop and used here entirely without their permission for the purpose of review)

But only AFTER I have ALL the other Maggotkin of Nurgle stuff I already have done (including the Warhammer Quest Darkwater stuff!)...

(which is four Pusgoyle Blightlords, five of the older Putrid Blightkings, a Harbinger of Decay, ten Rotmire Creed, a Sloppily Bilepiper, and the Feculent Gnarlmaw... and from Warhammer Quest: Darkwater; a pair of Cankerborn, eight Pestigors, fourteen Poxwretches, and maybe all the Sylvaneth stuff I have... If I add in the Sylvaneth, I have fifteen Spite-Revenants, two Treelords, and Drycha Hamadreth to finish up - though the latter is nearly done!)

I was pretty excited about the Tzeentch stuff presented at the New Years Preview. There wasn't much in terms of new miniatures - just faction terrain and a mortal infantry hero...

(The above image is ©2026 Games Workshop and used here entirely without their permission for the purpose of review)

The new faction terrain looks really interesting.

What also caught my eye was the Battleforce Box being released along with the new Battletome and the new Spearhead - all look fun. There is nothing new in either of those boxes. Just a lot of older miniatures all at deeply discounted prices!

(The above image is ©2026 Games Workshop and used here entirely without their permission for the purpose of review)

The Battleforce: Warpflame Cavalcade contains a Greater Daemon of Tzeentch, three Screamers of Tzeentch, three flamers of Tzeentch, an Exalted Flamer of Tzeentch, a Herald of Tzeentch on Burning Chariot, and ten each of Pink, Blue and Brimstone Horrors! A great big PILE of Daemons!

(The above image is ©2026 Games Workshop and used here entirely without their permission for the purpose of review)

The Tzaangor Warflock Spearhead is all Tzaangors - a Tzaangor Shaman leading three Tzaangor Enlightened, Three Tzaangor Skyfires, and 10 Tzaangor.

(The above image is ©2026 Games Workshop and used here entirely without their permission for the purpose of review)

So I'll probably pick up the Battleforce box and Battletome when they're released (as the Battleforce Box  will only be available for a limited time) and then I'll pick up the terrain and the Tzaangor Warflock Spearhead when I finish the daemons in the Battleforce box (and... maybe the Tzeentch Spearhead I already HAVE?!)

Because, apparently, I need ANOTHER chaos army...

Hopefully none of it is released until later in March...

Maybe this will be the YEAR OF CHAOS!!

Warhammer Quest: Darkwater - Shaman Foulhoof

It became clear a few days ago, I wasn't going to get all the Pestigors and Pox-Wretches done for the game on Tuesday... so I decided to focus on the Pestigors as Shaman Foulhoof - a Pestigor Shaman - is the "BOSS" for Act I, I thought it would make sense that there'd be a lot of Pestigors roving around the first levels of the Jade Abbey...

Of the sixteen Encounter cards in Act I, it looks like five involve only Pestigors, four involved Pox-Wretches (so they really SHOULD be NEXT!!), four involve Mire Kelpies (which I've already done!) and three involve more than one hostile type (two of those include Pestigors - with either Cankerborn or Shaman Foulhoof!)! Also, two of the three possible Boss Battle cards include Pestigors - and all three Boss Battles feature Shaman Fouhoof - hence these seemed like the number one priority!! If I didn't get the Pox-Wretches done for this first try at the game... it wouldn't be the end of the world...

In the end, I did not get the Pestigors done either... but I DID get Shaman Foulhoof!!

Shaman Foulhoof

So I had the boss and some Mire Kelpies... I figured I could used some Plaguebringers if I ended up needing a replacement for the Pestigors... I'll be sure to have the Pestigors AND the Pox-Wretched done for the next time we play!!

I still have Belga the Cystwitch, two Cankerborn, eight Pestigors, and fourteen Pox-Wretches, two treasure tokens, two living rot tokens and three heroes to finish up (Kelthannor, Drasher Vorn, and Jacobus Vyne with Wisper) for Warhammer Quest: Darkwater...

Shaman Foulhoof is comparable in size to other Maggotkin of Nurgle Heroes - like the Spoilpox Scrivener...

Shaman Foulhoof and Spoilpox Scrivener...

Probably should have dropped the Lord of Plagues in there as well... Ah, well... next time.

Warhammer Quest: Darkwater - Blight-Templars

Why would I do something like work on Pox-Wretches that show up on 5 of 16 encounter cards - or the Pestigors that show up on 6 of 16 encounter cards - in Act I when I can work on a unit that only appears on exactly ZERO of the encounter cards for Act I (but do make an appearance on one - of three possible - Boss Battle cards...)

(actually, I WAS working on the Pestigors, desperately trying to get them done... but failed to do so...)

In my defence, these were pretty simple... they're 90% ARMOUR - which was a bit of work layering up the rust and corrosion... but it was less changing of paints and thinking about what needs to go where than the Pox-Wretches... and there were only the three of them...

Blight-Templars

Mulgoth the Cleaver and the Blight-Templars (I'm pretty sure he's meant to be the leader of the Blight-Templars!

All the Maggotkin of Nurgle/Warhammer Quest: Darkwater hostiles , so far... (I forgot to include the Mire Kelpies!)

(Oh, yeah... that pic includes Shaman Foulhoof... who I have finished, but haven't posted yet, I thought I'd include him with the Pestigors... but they're not all done... so maybe he'll get a post all of his own after this one!?)

The Blight-Templars are similar in size to the outgoing Putrid Blightkings...

And I still have four Pusgoyle Blightlords, five putrid Blightkings, ten Roomier Creed and a Harbinger of Decay to finish up from the Shudderblight Cyst (AND the Feculent Gnarlmaw)... hopefully I'll get through most of this in Q1 of January 2026 - along with most of the Sylvaneth stuff!

Gelgus Pust, Prince of Sores, and Mulgoth the Cleaver

So, instead of working on the base level hostile minions and heroes, that would be useful for trying out or starting the game... I apparently decided I needed to start with the Biggest Boss himself and his Number One Lieutenant!?

Gelgus Pust, Prince of Sores, and Mulgoth the Cleaver

Gelgus Pust, Prince of Sores - I did a bit of light converting on the model. The original wasn't wearing a helmet... and...  I did NOT love his goofy face... So I found some left over helmet bits from Putrid Blight Kings (or maybe Pusgoyle Blightlords?) and did a bit of a swaperoo!

This Daemon Prince is the leader of the Nurgle forces that have infested the Jade Abbey in Warhammer Quest: Darkwater and is the Big Bad/Final Boss of the game

He's got some bug-bits - including wings on his back... I don't love how the wings turned out... but I'm not sure how to make them any better, so I'm calling it done and moving on!!

Mulgoth the Cleaver - Mulgoth is Gelgus Pust's Lieutenant and has served him for decades.

I also did a quick comparrison show of these two new Nurgle Lords with some of the older Nurgle minis...

From Left to Right; Plaguebearer, Gelgus Pust, Lord of Plagues, Mulgoth, Older Putrid Blightking

While I was painting them, having only Gelgus Pust as a reference, I was feeling like Mulgoth was rather small... but seeing him in this line-up next to a Lord of Plagues... He IS kind of a big boi!

I really need to assemble and paint the REST of the Hostile Minions (Pox-Wretches, Pestigors and Blight Templars)... I have most of the Heroes and Hostile characters done - except for Shaman Foulhoof - the Boss for Act I!? I think that will be THE PRIORITY for the week - Shamen Foulhoof, Pestigors, and Pox-Wretches, and the four basic heroes!

Played the final game of our Ravaged Coast Path to Glory campaign yesterday, so I have a game report to finish up for that.

Last Tuesday, Amanda, Finnegan and I attempted a  Decapitation Journey for Carmilla DuSang in Warhammer Quest: Cursed City - and I'd hoped to have THAT game report done by today... and maybe I could still finish it up (at least I got the three other Warhammer Quest game reports I was behind on done!)

AND we played the lastest episode in the What We Do in the Realm of Shadows campaign AND a Spearhead Doubles game on Sunday... so, at some point, I'll have game reports for THOSE!?

Never thought I'd be saying this, but... I almost feel like I need to play less games so I can get caught up with the game reports and painting!?

Age of Sigmar - Counter-Attack at The Blood Pines

After successfully ambushing the fleeing Maggotkin, and propelling their retreat further and faster, straight out of the Blood Pines, the Sylvaneth had to stop their advance for a bit to purge the taint of Nurgle from their reacquired lands. Then the forces of Nurgle, realized the harrying force was no longer immediately on their tails, they slowed and rallied and prepared for another major attack by the Sylvaneth. When that was not forthcoming, the marched back to the Blood Pines to try and wrest it back from the feisty tree spirits...

They found the Sylvaneth busy growing a new Awakened Wyldwood...

The Force of the Maggotkin were determined to bring it down and putrify the region all over again!

Lord Blobbottom, Lord of Affliction, and his trusty aid, Anthony the Pusygoyle Blightlord, approached on the right, only to be ambushed by a flight of Gossamid Archers. Anthony's rotfly mount was pierced by a number of their arrows, but managed to stay aloft!

Fecula Flyblown, the Rotbringer Sorcerer, and her guard of Putrid Blightkings advanced on the left of the Maggotkin line.

Heglog, the Treelord, stepped out from the Awakened Wyldwoods to thrash a few of the approaching plaguebearer deamons with their lashing roots and vines.

Lord Blobbottom and Anthony chased down the harassing Gossamid Archers.

The ensuing melee was a harrowing clash of mid-air acrobatics and extreme violence.

Four of the Sylvaneth archers were cut down immediately, the final one in the flight held up the advance of the two Rotbringers.

The slow advance of the Plaguefather's legions continued.

The Putrid Blightlords were unfazed by the arrows of the Kurnothi Hunters, either deflected by their armour or piercing only the bloated rotting limbs which were numb to any sensation of pain.

The Branchwych summoned a Glade Wyrm to aid them in their time of need!

The tide of Maggotkin clashed with the defenders of the newly Awakened Wyldwood

Putrid Blightkings fought savagely with the Spite-Revenants.

...and slaughtered all but one of them in their initial clash...

Another group of Spite-Revenants butchered one of the hordes of Plaguebearers on the right of the line...

The Spoilpox Scrivener held back... thinking itself out of harms way... but then realizing it was difficult to maintain control of the Plaguebearers under its command!

Fecula Flyblown also lingered back, mistakenly thinking herself out of harms way...

until the summoned Gladeworm burst out of the ground behind her!

The terrifying beast charged the Rotbringer Sorceress and the two clashed furiously!

Lord Blobbottom bullied his way through a unit of Tree-Revenants and then started hacking away at the Awakened Wyldwoods itself!

Hearing the cries of their sorceress, the Blightkings paused. She assured them she could take care of the Gladewyrm and bade them focus on their task; destroying the Wyldwood!

The Blightkings moved in and started vigorously and violently chopping away at the young grove while the Plaguebearers distracted the Kurnothi and the Treelord!

And the Wyldwood was destroyed!

Fecula Flyblown banished the first Gladewyrm... only for another to appear!

The last of the Revenants charged Lord Blobbottom, determined to bring him down and exact some VENGEANCE!

Ceitllwyn, the Branchwych, no longer having a Wyldwood to defend, charged out of it's ruins and started hacking down plaguebearers!

The Putrid Blightkings, having succeeded in their task, turned on the Kurnoth Hunters.

The Branchwych summoned a Vengeful Skullroot to assist in exacting revenge against the befouling Maggotkin.

Heglog, having mostly finished off the Plaguebearers, and leaving the last to Ceitllwyn, turned on the Putrid Blightkings and pummelled two of them into the earth.

Ceitllwyn summoned a new wyldwood from the ground!

having unseated Lord Blobbottom from his rotfly and leaving him for dead in some low bushes, the last of the Spite-Revanants joined the assault on the Putrid Blightkings.

A second Gladewyrm had been destroyed by Fecula and the Spoilpox Scrivener... but then a THIRD showed up and brought the Rotbringer Sorceress low... the Spoilpox Scrivener fought fiercely, but was also overcome by this ferocious Spite of concentrated life magiks!

Things were turning against the Putrid Blightkings... they tried to take the Branchwych with them!

Finally the last Purtrig Blightking fled...

Having lost their newly Awakened Wyldwood, the Sylvaneth were obliged to withdraw from the Blood Pines once again and the surviving Maggotkin, once again, made it their own!

Amanda and I FINALLY got in another game in our small Path to Glory campaign (Path to Glory - Methervale Campaign). I've been quite distracted by the Ravaged Coast Path to Glory campaign, recently. I was thiking it would be nice to wrap up both by the end of the year - so we can start the Blighted Wilds campaign in the new year - but now that I HAVE Blighted Wilds and realized it's a mix of elements from the Ascension (which we were using for this campaign) and Ravaged Coast, I thought it would be easy enough to change THIS campaign into a Blighted Wilds campaign... Or... maybe mix in elements of Blighted Wilds into this campaign...? As sort of a practice run for the REAL Blighted Wilds campaign in the new year...?

So Amanda and I used a Battleplan (scenario) from Blighted Wilds (Forest Fortress) to play out this game and used the Blighted Wilds post game sequence.

As with the few victories I've had in the Ravaged Coast campaign, this one was Pyrrhic at best. I succeeded in destroying the Awakened Wildwood - the objective of the battleplan - but had nearly my entire force wiped out in the process!! At the end of the game only ONE Putrid Blightkings remained on the table (with only ONE HEALTH remaining!?). Had the game gone one more round, he would have been chased down and slaughtered...

So all but ONE of my units would suffering from battlewounds! Luckily I rolled low for most of them, and Fecula and the Spoilpox Scrivener both succeeded in their healing rituals and fixed up Anthony the Pusygoyle Blightlord and the unit of Plaguebearers that had more than one Battlewound!

I like the differences in Blighted Wilds. Instead of having to go on quests for additional spells and enhancements, you just have to win certain scenarios... (of course, it means you HAVE TO WIN certain scenarios... but it seems like a little less paper work).

The Battle Wound and Battle Scar system is similar to Ravaged Coast, which has problems... but at least there is an additional way to remove Battle Wounds - you can choose to leave ONE unit out of battle to "rest" each game and they automatically heal D6 Battle Wounds... so... there's that...

New units are added through the accumulation of Glory Points - which you gain SOME of, every game, regardless of whether you win or lose (though you gain MORE if you win!). And Path progression is based on Renown - which every unit participating gains in each game - regardless if they survive the battle or not (though they generally gain MORE if they are still on the table at the end of the game!)

It may seem like a BIT more paperwork to track, but I like it better than the Embershard system of Ravaged Coast. With new additions to the force, advancement along pathways, and the gaining of new enhancements happening through three different mechanism, all three can happen at a reasonable rate simultaneously. With the emberstone shard economic system in Ravaged Coast, we mostly saw everyone not bothering to add anything to their forces (because if you faced a smaller force, a chunk of your army might not be available for the entire game) whereas if you just put ALL of your emberstone shards into buying Pathway advances for your heroes they just got GROSS... REALLY FAST!!! I think everyone has LEGENDARY heroes at this point with just game-breaking special abilities?!

I feel like Blighted Wilds might even this out a bit - no crazy advancement... forces growing organically... I think it could be a fun campaign to play through...

Having won a Forest Fortress Battleplan, the Maggotkin forces could pick and enhancement to give to an eligible unit, OR add a new spell to their Arcane Tome, OR take a one-game ability reward... I decided to give Fecula Flyblown - my Rotbringer Sorceress - the Witherstave - an artifact of power that allows her to pick an enemy unit that has charged her and on a 4+, they have STRIKE-LAST for the turn... giving her SOME chance to hit them before being taken out!
