Technological developments have rapidly made computer-assisted translation tools widespread. Tran... more Technological developments have rapidly made computer-assisted translation tools widespread. Translation memories, one of the computer-assisted translation tools, store previous translations aligned to the source texts. By comparing the current source text with the previous source texts and translations, translation memories suggest translations at different rates of similarity. Thus, they make translation faster and more consistent. In addition, translation memories also decrease the effort of translators. However, the assumption that translation memories decrease the effort of translators has led to a discount scheme in the translation market. According to this discount scheme, the higher the fuzzy match ratio is, the less payment is given to the translators. This discount scheme has been frequently criticized by the translators as unfair. This study focuses on the effort that translators spend while translating different types of matches in translation memories and aims to determine whether the effort of the translators is changing with the fuzzy match rate. A total of 14 participants translated two technical texts of approximately 190 words from English to Turkish and vice versa. The efforts of translators in translation experiments were measured. In order to operationalize the effort concept, Krings’ notions of temporal, physical and cognitive effort (1986; 2001) and O'Brien's (2008) concept of subjective effort have been employed. The temporal effort was calculated based on the translation time; Levenshtein distance was employed to calculate the physical effort. In order to calculate the cognitive effort, the number of fixations and the duration of average fixation were measured. Subjective effort was measured via the editing effort of the subjects. Correlation analysis was conducted via IBM SPSS Statistics program. It was found that the effort of translators at the participant level did not change according to the fuzzy match ratio. At the group level, however, as the match ratio increases, the effort decreases in both translation directions.

This study focuses on the perceptions of interpreters about challenges in TI in Türkiye in which TI has been offered as a public service since 2011 and by private language service providers.With the objective of shedding light on the practices and problems experienced by telephone interpreters and their opinions on how to improve this practice, the study employed interview as the data collection method. The study recruited 12 telephone interpreters, whose opinions were then analyzed using thematic analysis. The participants highlighted that Turkish clients seem unaware of the interpreting process and aggravate TI problems. In addition, the participants proposed various measures for improving the quality of TI in Türkiye.

While it has various advantages, such as fast access to interpreters, flexibility of working hours, and no commute, telephone interpreting literature also depicts various problems such as lack of visual information, overlapping speech, low remuneration, low professionalism, fatigue and stress, which negatively affect interpreters. This study aims to present the challenges and problems of telephone interpreters. Document analysis was used as the data collection tool; a corpus consisting of forty-three entries related to telephone interpreting in Proz.com was created. The corpus was then analyzed with the content analysis method conducted with Maxqda 2020. Six main themes emerged in the analysis: general options regarding telephone interpreting, industry-related aspects, interpreting process, equipment, charging, skills and training. The results show that while there are various advantages of telephone interpreting, disadvantages such as low remuneration, demanding nature and lack of visual information are demotivation factors for interpreters. In addition, charging methods and rates are regulated by global companies, driving the wages lower to attract governmental organizations. The landline norm of companies persists, and the interpreters point out the dangers of using mobile phones. The frequently cited problems during the interpreting process were also mentioned in the corpus. The study concludes with suggestions for special training in telephone interpreting.

The effect of globalization is apparent in both interpreting profession and the market, as in all... more The effect of globalization is apparent in both interpreting profession and the market, as in all other professions. Thus, the fields of expertise and the requested languages are diversified, creating a demand for new knowledge and skills in the interpreting service. Knowledge and skills required in interpreting process become evident when the areas of interpreting are examined. In order to be comprehensible in these areas, arising with the phenomenon of globalization, professional interpreters, who have interpreting competence, are needed. Hence this study aims to analyze the extent to which the interpreting competences are given in the curricula of translation and interpreting departments in the light of current developments. Document analysis method was employed in the study as the data collection method to conduct an interpreting competency-oriented analysis of interpreting lessons offered in the translation and interpreting departments in Turkey. Interpreting courses in four state and two foundation universities offering bachelor degrees in translation and interpreting were selected as sample and then analyzed. The contents and objectives of the interpreting courses presented in these departments were employed as the corpus and analyzed with the content analysis method. Content analysis method was administrated as the data analysis method, in which themes and codes were structured based on the interpreting competence matrix and the learning objectives presented by Kautz (2002). The interpreting competence matrix was based on the interpreting competence models presented by Kutz (2010), Pöchhacker (2000) and Albl-Mikasa (2012). First of all, each university was taken into consideration one by one and competence-focused evaluation was conducted; the results were presented in graphs in terms of hours of courses. Afterwards, the analysis was detailed and the departments were compared with each other. The analysis revealed that interpreting competences were presented to the trainee interpreters at different degrees. In addition, it was uncovered that fewer lessons aiming to make the students gain emotional competence were presented in the analyzed departments, compared to other competences.

Var olan lisans düzeyindeki İngilizce Mütercim Tercümanlık bölümlerinden farklı bir program izleyen bu bölümlerin son yıllarda bu kadar hızlı bir şekilde artması, ilgimizi mesleki eğitim olarak çevirmenlik konusuna çekmiştir. Bu çalışmada, henüz üzerinde fazlaca inceleme yapılmamış olan ön lisans programları konusuna akademik ilgiyi çekmek amacıyla lisans ve ön lisans programları arasında karşılaştırmalı bir çözümleme yapmayı hedeflemektedir. Var olan programların sayısı ve değişkenlerin çokluğu sebebiyle çalışma akademik kadro, öğrenci kontenjanı, sunulan ikinci yabancı diller ve verilen dersler ile sınırlandırılacaktır. Akademik kadro, öğrenci kontenjanı ve sunulan ikinci yabancı dillerde genel görünümü vermesi için lisans ve ön lisans düzeyinde eğitim veren 5 devlet ve 5 vakıf üniversitesi karşılaştırılacaktır. Derslerin karşılaştırılmasında ise, bütün bölümlere ait bütün derslerin bu çalışmada gösterilmeyecek kadar çok olmasından dolayı, gerek lisans düzeyinde, gerekse ön lisans düzeyinde ülkemizde ilk kurulan bölümlerden birer tanesi karşılaştırılacaktır. Interpreting market is affected by both local and global factors, such as globalization and technological developments. The interpreting market in Turkey is growing, both due to the economic developments and mass migration movement. In addition, the translation and interpreting departments in the universities graduate many translators and interpreters who face many problems in the market. In order to prepare the graduates in accordance with the market expectations, thus increasing their employability, the market conditions of today and the future should be taken into consideration by the translation and interpreting departments. This study focuses on market demands in the interpreting market in Turkey. Representatives of 47 interpreting companies have been administered an online survey. The current state, the expectations from interpreting education, the expected qualities of graduates, as well as the predictions of interpreting market have been asked and the questions are presented with a view to making suggestions for the interpreting curricula in Turkey. The answers have been analyzed with content analysis method and suggestions have been put forward for the interpreting curricula. As the first descriptive analysis of the interpreting market in Turkey, this study provides an important data source for the interpreting studies in Turkey.
